- IMPORTANT: I had to update how I feel about the blades. This video is 100% truth in how I felt at the time I recorded it, however in the interest of being completely transparent and accurate....SINCE THIS VIDEO WAS RECORDED I got very tired of how extremely brittle the Pegas spirals are. I went back to Flying Dutchman spirals and never turned back.
The video remains because it is an accurate comparison in cutting. That being said, I had no way of knowing how turned off I would be since the date of recording. I despise Pegas spirals and will not use them. Sharp is nice, but not at the cost of short length of use due to breakage.

Experience the comparison between Flying Dutchman and Pegas blades...while I experience it. Unedited so you can see as I see as it happened. I also show how my scroll saw has been updated for bigger projects.

I got here by finding this thread on facebook and had to see the video for myself, trying to figure out why anyone would go so far to rack up dislikes on a guy for a simple demo video. For the life of me, I can't figure it out. Anywho, give the troll a big thank-you, because of the troll my curiosity was piqued, I sought out the vid on youtube, watched the whole thing, was impressed enough to subscribe to your channel, hit the notifications bell, AND, went to bearwood and brought a bunch of blades. So, let your troll know that because of him/her/it you got a new subscriber and bearwood got a $100+ purchase! Just gotta love how that hate shit works out in the end!
Lol, thanks. Haters gonna hate right? I'm so glad you found value in the video and was a win/win for all involved.
Nice demo Charles. I do intarsia, utilizing a variety of hard and softwood. I had been using #5 FD Ultra reverse and Olson PGT blades. When I tried the Pegas modified geometry blades I was amazed at the difference compared to the other two. The Pegas cut true without any feed bias and they stayed sharp longer, almost double the cut time in comparison. They are an aggressive design. I don't use spirals, but I am a Pegas convert for intarsia.
Thanks for the comparison, Charles. I don't use my scroll saw much, but now I want some Pegas blades!
Wow, what a difference. I could see the different the entire time. But the thick walnut at the end was quite impressive. If a spiral blade impresses Charles Dearing, that's a huge endorsement!
I enjoyed the video. And I too am sold! Though I've been a fan of Pegas flat blades for a long time, I've never gotten my hands on their spirals yet.
That was a really good comparison Charles. I recently purchased some Pegas blades but I haven't tried them yet now I am looking forward to it. Thanks for doing the review.
Hi Charles, I like the way you told people how to tension the blades , when I first started scrolling about 40 years ago I had to figure it out myself.
You've sold me on the pegas sprial blades , I may start using there other blades as well, I like making trinket boxes compound cutting and portraits .
Unfortunately soon after that video I realized how horribly brittle the Pegas spirals are. I quit using them and went back to Flying Dutchman and never looked back. Thanks for watching and for the kind words
Thank you for showing this.. I could certainly hear and see the difference in the resistance.. I don't use spirals often but am in need of some more blades.. Have already switched to the Pegas flat blades.. and going to try the Pegas spirals
Great demo. Thanks!
Thanks Charlie, I had the same results as well.I tried Pegasus this year too. I had always used flying dutchman for 20 years. I kinda like them too.
You are correct I could definitely hear and see the difference Awesome job can’t be any fairer than that.
Why so many thumbs down? Looked like a fair comparison to me. Pegas is obviously the better blade. Brand loyalty maybe? I know most scrollers are Flying Dutchman fans, i've always used Olsen myself. That's only because I bought a gross and still have half of them left.
Someone purchased the thumbs downs. I had a short amount of time where it increased by 110 views and 530 thumbs downs. Took screen captures to prove my case. Wrote to CZcams...got no response, but a lot of the views disappeared...yet the thumbs downs stayed.
Must've been the Germans - where FD blades are made LOL
Thanks for the side by side I have been using the flat Pegas blade for some time now with good luck I thank I will give the spirals a shot next
One thing I noticed, when you cut the walnut, the FD blade flexed and distorted drastically, even as slow as you were making the cut. The P blade didn't bend at all, even as fast as you cut. That blade movement alone is going to make a big difference in the quality of the cut. I'm going to go to bearwood and buy me some blades, I'll let you know when I use them myself. As of right now I'm using FD blades and Sharktooth. Both are about even in my opinion.
well done, Pegas is my blade of choose as well, cuts cleaner, faster and breaks less often , great review Charles and love the new set up
awesome review Charles, i use Pegas Straight and Spiral blades, LOVE them both
I placed my first order for Pegas last week. Should be here soon. Had a huge number of free "ONLINE BRAND" blades come with my Seyco saw last month. Being a new scroller I can't say if they were good or bad. I can compare them when they get here. Something tells me that for me the answer is just like anything else - practice practice practice! I can't follow a line to save my life!
I was hoping to see the top feeder that I seen Wes use the other day as I am very interested in getting one for my next saw. Old eyes and bad back make top loading a better choice. But I am so glad I seen first hand the difference of how far the blades flexedto cut. FD clearly requires a lot more force to cut. I too am a tried and true loyal FDspiral user but quality control at FD seems to have gone missing because I am sure getting a lot of garbage b,axes from them, spiral 3 and New Spiral 3 mainly. This video has made me think its time to switch to pegas blades. Thanks for the great head to head trial, the circle and then walnut sold me. Thanks again
Thank you very much. The saw Wes was using was a Seyco ST-21. To top feed, just clamp the blade into the top clamp and feed it through the pilot hole from the top. Once it's through, just clamp it into the bottom clamp and pull the tension back. Thanks for watching!
What a difference Charles...I'll have to try them for sure....
Thanks Charles, I have been wondering about the new brand. I will give them a try
Very clear difference between the 2. Great review Charles! Oh I liked the handheld footage too.
great to here and see a good blade
thats actually a great idea on the bed slats.
Thanks for this, Charles. Let us know when you do a complete project with the Pegus the final breakdown on that. (FB would be fine.) Is the cut smoother so that there is less finish work, i.e, sanding? That would hopefully give you an idea of how long the blades last before getting dull.
Katie Dotson if the spirals last as long as the flat blades Pegasus is the longest lasting blade I've used yet but I've only been sawing for a year now
Good job Charles. Guess i need to try the Pegas blades
damn that is total night and day. i found my new supplier of blades for my shop.
Yes good job Charles!! Hey Charles I can see how you would need that huge table top...scroll on :vulcan:
Great Job Buddy #53👍
great info charles
Hi Charles. What about the cut quality? More or less fluffies?
Bradmatthews1 pretty equal (spirals)
One last note, would it be okay to let bearwood know you sent me when I order this week?
IBEGIZZMO sure! ;)
Only spiral blades ive ever used and will ever use..
FD user for about 15 years.. I got a question I never remember to ask til now. Does releasing the tension when you're not using the saw for any period of time increase the blade's life? Say a week or more? Or no difference? Thanks for the great video.
Sounds like they are good blades. Oh yeah btw here n missouri at the lumber yard I work at we pronounce it with "on" instead of "an" at the end of the word Lauan. But we could b pronouncing it wrong lol
You're biased and set it up a certain way! I guess I gotta give Pegus a try now . . . FD are so cheap though!
