Regina S. wrote in with this great idea:
"I have a special needs daughter age 14. When I was at the Stone Mountain conference I got the green nature study in the year book. My daughter can't draw very well and would lose interest; so I began to take pictures of whatever we were studying about each week to glue into this nature book. She enjoys seeing herself in the picture next to the items we are studying. Then we would write our comments and observations down in the book as well. This is becoming a huge treasure to us. She remembers things better because of the pictures. I put the pictures on a word document to be printed out. We paste them in the book and we have clear memories of each study. Just thought I would share this… not all children have art ability and this is another way that the nature study book can be used."

You can do a nature study from a window on those extra cold or extra hot days.

How do you do a nature journal with a 5 year old who cannot write or read yet?

Hi this is a great question! Have them draw if they are able to. If they would like to tell you something to write down, or if you want to label the drawing with what they had observed and the date those are some good starting off points. Here is a post on how to do nature study in the preschool years, that you may enjoy!
