The Wildly Excessive History Of Hollywood’s Party Castle

- Of all the places celebrities partied during Hollywood's Golden Age, one of the most popular was more than four hours north of Tinseltown. Movie stars and others among Hollywood's most famous drinkers often attended parties at Hearst Castle in San Simeon, CA, owned by publishing mogul William Randolph Hearst. While Hearst's enormous hillside estate may have inspired the somber epic Citizen Kane, what went on behind the walls of the real castle had a more playful and fun tone - at least until Hearst ran out of money.

PLEASE NEVER LOSE THIS NARRATOR EVER WE LOVE HIM SO MUCH
It's AI, I think.
@@ivareskesner2019 no, they’ve been using this narrator for years and years and he’s gone away at times to be replaced by other people. Come on, know what you’re talking about before putting weird notions into the universe
@@ivareskesner2019 the guys name is Tom Blank and he’s not A.I
He's not a him but an AI.😅
He's allowed to take breaks FCOL! Just accept that he'll do the majority of the videos and be nice to his temporary replacement. That poor guy doesn't deserve such hate!
This narrator is the gold standard on CZcams.
"Truth is not only stranger than fiction, it is more interesting." - William Randolph Hearst
In 2023 I took 6 different tours of Hearst Castle. The place in unimaginably packed with antiquities and the ceilings in each room are different and incredibly intricate. Both the Roman and Neptune pools are sights to behold. If you're someone with an 'eye for detail' then you'll love visiting. From the kitchen to the bathrooms, everything is amazing. Also, don't forget there's three guest houses that are located in front of the castle
Have been to the castle many times. My mother loved it. My favourite part were the tapestries. Their size and beauty blew me away as a child.
Were the tapestries Scottish?
@@TDK360 I couldn't tell you. Many didn't have any labels or information near them and it has been about 30 years since last I was there. Just curious, why Scottish in particular? I imagine that there may be some images online.
I liked the indoor L pool. Actually it was all great. I was bummed we couldn't see the Neptune pool. It was being refurbished (retrograded?) because of asbestos. Our tour guide said that it was insane when Lady Gaga was there. I'd like to go again some time.
@TDK360 lol not sure how many will get the joke!! I do appreciate it though 😂
@@TDK360 😅
I've been to this place. you need an more than an entire day to really appreciate the whole place. It's really grand but not a "home"
I love that he revved up the Spanish American War then named his castle in Spanish.
Good point.
No worry. With the white Birth Rate what it is, everything will be "renombrado" anyway. 🍷 😇
Having been there many, many times, it is truly spectacular, everyone should visit. And yes, GREAT narrator!
Not sure if you’ve already done it, but Patty Hearst deserves an episode of her own.
Agreed!
Especially Symbionese Army stuff....
Here’s the Voice , thanks for keep him on !!😊👍🏼
One of the best narrator's, he's so funny and shows his smartness!
I love his voice and style, but he reads a script so I don't think you can infer "smart".
Show your "smartness" by not putting an apostrophe in a simple plural - narrators*
@@jenniferlonnes7420 Thank you Professor. Everyone is much better off with pedantic comments like this.
@@emmgeevideo Cool, thanks for being gracious. I'll keep them coming. 😁
@@jenniferlonnes7420 The improper use of hyphens when two words are used as adjectives is rampant on CZcams comments. That's a rich vein of opportunity for an anal retentive commenter.
I would've been disappointed if he didn't quipped that "oh my!" after listing all the animals. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I've been there twice... and as a CA resident I expect I'll go again.... It may be a monument to excess but it is spectacular.
Inherited 11 Million in 1919.... Damn.

Narrator for the win!
idk if it's that his quips are spontaneous or if hes just working with the writers long enough that they work well together, but this narrator has the best delivery of those little quips and jokes after the facts, perfectly dry
I've been there twice. Same feeling both times I desperately wanted to swim in the same pool that Johnny Wisemiller or Tarzan swam in.They will tell you how Johnny, who was an Olympic swimmer gave his great Tarzan yodel from a nearby roof and jumped in. Its hot and dry there in the summer and you just ache to plop into that pool its massive. I wasn't aware of all the other structures. I think our tour is restricted. Its really fun to see and he reconstructed a hearth from a French castle. I would be wary of camping out with tigers they might get out and wander. One really cool thing is I was allowed to just sit by the pool as long as I wanted. When I came when I was little I remember being managed and velvet ropes. But now you can sit around if you want outside only. I imagined Cary Grant working on his fabulous tan. One day maybe when I'm really old I'm jumping in that damn pool.
I tried to sit down by the outdoor pool because I was tired. Told not to do that by docents.
When I visited, I believe the tour guide said there is a huge fine if you jump in any of the pools. They are magnificent though!
@@Ooogabooga282 Because it is a state park.
Scottys castle in Death Valley was quite the party place. Extremely interesting history and is beautiful
I toured the castle with my parents when I was a child. Don't remember too much about it except for an indoor fountain that flowed over some brightly colored tiles. Beautiful effect! Also remember seeing the remaining parts of the zoo.
It's a treasure, a by-gone era, that will never come again. Left for us to enjoy.
He sounds like a real piece of work. Just like most of the mega-rich.
My grandma use to hang out there with Victor French
Oh word?

I have been there so many times, The tours are amazing! I was amazed by all the art work.
I had the honor to visit Hurst Castle twice with my grandmother. She grew up in a small town just south of the castle. Beautiful memories 💖
Thanks for this! 🏰
I remember this location from *Lady Gaga’s* G.U.Y video. That pool is sooo dope 🤙🏼
It's a fascinating place to visit.
Thank you! Awesome video, as usual. I went there many years ago. It is a very beautiful and interesting place!
I'd like to know the continuing history of Hearst Castle after Hearst died.
The entire property was donated to the State of California. For tax reasons, the contents were donated over a 20-year period. The state makes a lot of money, conducting all those tours.
Great story! Love this guy! I went to Hearst Castle in 2010. What a Xanadu!
I live a couple hours away from San Simeon, and the castle is well worth a visit. An incredible spectacle!
Visited this home 3 times growing up in Ca. It is an amazing place..
Xanadu!
Ive been inside that place in the summer of 2008. There are multi0le guest houses, there are swimming pools, and various rooms including a movie theater and library.
looks like the depiction of hearst on "deadwood" was dead on 😁
I absolutely love this place it’s part of my family history as well so Hearst Castle holds a special place in my heart❤
Ok
.Flow some Hearst cash over here.
Fascinating ❤
They even had a mini museum in the parking lot that was fabulous❤
Yes I would like to tour that place for sure. But wow it amazes me with people with endless money choose to spend it on.
There aren't many places I care to go but this is definitely on my bucket list 😍
My boo and I love going to Hearst castle!!
I have been there 4 times. Hearst detested drunkeness and limited the cocktail hour before dinner to one drink. Then, of course, wine was served at dinner. Ironically, Davies was an alcoholic which she unsuccessfully hid from WR.
A must see.
I've been there with my family, it's AMAZING!
I was just there in November! It’s sort of amazing & appalling at the same time. ✌🏼
Been there…. This is awesome!
I took one of the 4 Hearst Castle tours in 1999, the one of the main House, and it just reminded me that some people have way too much wealth. With that amount of wealth, one really should reassess their ethical values.
So, what have you done for the poor and indigent in the past year? He probably gave more to charity in one month than you've given in a lifetime.
I'm sure purely as a tax write off if they had them in his day. Nonetheless, 10% of billions is not much of a sacrifice compared to 10% of a few hundred when it comes to owning enough to live on. So tell me, what did he give since you seem to think you know? I've done a lot of giving considering how little I have. But this man had gold leaf imbedded in decking of his indoor pool. No one needs that much put into a pool deck. That's nothing but a status display and a blatant waist of wealth that could serve better elsewhere.@@danidavis7912
Oh my God! . . .I think that is an ACTUAL, REAL human being doing the narration. It's the first human voice I've heard all day.
What ever happened to Patty Hearst?🤔
Coity Castle has a cool story History. Gave a look. 😎👌🏽
I’ve been through almost every tour offered at Hearst Castle, and all-time favorite area is the kitchen.
I’ve visited the Hearst Castle, five times to make sure I saw all of the property. Fascinating place! Plus, I visited the property 3 times before the PLO bomb part of the property.
I've never been, but it's within 3 hours drive of me. I should check it out someday.
Would love to see this place someday.
I love this place ❤
Hearst Castle is pretty cool to see! I recommend checking out.
7:16 That's awesome.
My Uncle was a landscaper for the Hearst castle in the 80s. He says he got to swim in the pool a few times. My grandparents had a huge poster of the castle.
My Uncle swears the place is haunted, he turns white if you ask about the ghosts.
Well, if you’re gonna haunt a house when you’re dead, yeah, I’d pick that one
Always go to hear your voice, tom
The outside Pool is on Hydraulic jacks because of Earthquakes. The inside Pool is Gold lined. I went there back in the 70's.
Do Death Valley Scotty's Castle. Walter E. Scott's story must be told on Weird History.
5:01 Jag-wires? Lol
While filming my scenes for the movie called "To Live and Die and Live" I definitely did not venture into Hearst Castle. It could be cursed
Next time you make a history video like this, mentioning monetary value, please give the equivalent today. It's fun to see that if Hearst spent a million dollars on the place in.1947, that be worth thirteen million now.
I toured the castle a couple of times as a kid. It’s just amazing how rich he was. Filthy rich…
Been to Hearse Castle decades ago. Had a piece of gold leaf tile from one of the swimming pools. Mom hung on to it for safe keeping. IDK what happened to it.
I read somewhere that there was a huge fireplace at the "unpopular" end of the dining table which made it very uncomfortable to sit and eat. Having been placed there, Harpo Marx named it 'The Hot Seat', hence the saying.
“Rose Bud.”

Hearst acolytes were attacking Welles well into the 1990s, trying character assassination that never stuck, but it did make it hard for him to find work. I went on the Hearst Castle tour, and it's beautiful, though his taste was in his shoe. When we got to the indoor pool, the reverb made it irrestistable, and I got vigorously 'shushed' by the tour guide after I imitated the narrator in "Citizen Kane", starting "XANADU..."
Oh my😂😂😂
ARe those yaks @5:00? They look kinda like Scottish Highland Cows!

Must've been some REALLY rare and exotic animals--Never heard of jag-wires 😂
Hearst did have room service; however, you had to bring the dishes back. He wanted you to explore the property
This is the voice.
7:15 nobody told me charlie chaplain was serving like this
Xanadu this. 😂😂😂 Beautiful ❤
How about Scotty's Castle in Death Valley?
Visiting as a child.I'll never forget seeing the zoo when you drive up and the infinity point
I've been there a couple times and it's worth a trip. The entire area is gorgeous with things to do. As far as the castle, there are I believe four tours you can choose from. The last time I was driving to it we saw zebras hanging out by the fencline and pulled over to try and pet them. Absolutely random.
I've been there and it's one of the most beautiful houses there in California. If Cali falls off into the ocean that house and the Sarah Winchester House should be saved! The Sarah Winchester House has over 250 million dollars worth of custom Lewis comfort Tiffany stained glass in it. For the Hearst castle it's the swimming pools that do it for me❤
I want a place like this, I'd be a hotel and I'd have my own suite
I can't help but say how much W.R, Hearst looks like a young version of the infamous actor Jeffrey Jones (from "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and "Beetle Juice") or "vice" versa.
