    Tyrion in King's Landing is some of the most fun stuff in the series by far.
    I need to get back into these books, started the 2nd one a while ago but got distracted by other things. Cersei is my personal favorite character in the series and I am most interested in her POV chapters in book 4, sorry to hear that didn't really work for you. I'll get back to these books some day, really loved the first book.

    If you haven’t yet, try Fire and Blood. It has all the elements you like about asoif and none of the ones you don’t. It’s action packed and reads like an epic history book of medieval fantasy.

    Great video Jonathan! Tyrion is one of my absolute favorite characters over the whole series. Book one and then book five are my top two books, but I honestly like them all a lot. I enjoyed the show for the most part too. I agree with you that Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is outstanding. It’s a pinnacle of fantasy writing for me. I just started Fire & Blood, and let me tell you - it’s sensational!

      Cant wait to start that one! And it’s tied into the new series coming out this year. Hopefully that series will be good.

      It’s funny, because in the show my favorite characters to follow were the Kings Landing Characters, but they just weren’t as enjoyable here. And Martin kept adding plot lines when he should have been focusing on existing ones. But if Winds of Winter comes out and pays off A Feast For Crows, maybe I’ll change my mind.

    What's your opinion of Fire and Blood? Outside of the actual book series, Fire and Blood is one of my favorite books overall.

      I picked up a copy at the MSP airport back in November when I was waiting for a flight. I wasn't quite expecting the textbook-style writing of it (being written from the account of an in-universe character), but I have liked it so far. With the way it is written, it's one that I usually only read when I'm on break at work. I'm not sure if I would be up for long pleasure-reading sessions with it.

    I really enjoyed A Game of Thrones and liked Martin's writing style. I have not yet read any of the sequels so I can't order them myself; however, I have been chipping away at Fire and Blood and I do plan to pick up a copy of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. I heard that the Song of Ice and Fire books are way better than the show. What are your thoughts on the HBO adaptation?

    • @jonathankoan
      @jonathankoan  Před 2 lety +1

      I think that the show has some amazing high points, particularly in the first 4 seasons and in season 6. I actually enjoy the story of the show better because it doesn’t branch off quite as much. However, the last two seasons are truly frustrating to watch for me. Way too rushed.

    To be honest I'd probably swap the top two but otherwise fully agree although I have only read the five 'main' books and not any others.
    When the TV series came out I'd already read the first two and my wife hadn't....I got in trouble for not warning her about the fate of Ned Stark!

      The first three are on par with the show in quality...but after that the quality dips faster than the show, and while the show isn't as good, the books become worse.

      Unfortunately, you’re probably right. Plus the first 3 books are good, but 4 and 5 are pretty dull.

    • @cheezyfilmsproductions1842
      @cheezyfilmsproductions1842 Před rokem

      I think we will, but I don’t know if Martin will write it. I think he’ll put out Winds of Winter eventually, but I do think he will probably pass before he finishes A Dream of Spring unless he gets motivated and gets it out 3 or four years after WoW. But hopefully he will have the foresight to take extensive notes and gives the okay to have someone finish it for him. Maybe Joe Abercrombie if he would be willing.
      I think that them getting Sanderson to finish Wheel of Time for Robert Jordan really cemented Jordan’s legacy and that of the series. If ASoIaF goes unfinished I think it’ll unfortunately hurt the legacy of the books. I wonder how many major novel series of the past have been forgotten due to not getting a proper ending, or even ending poorly?

    So in your mind the series just goes down hill from book 1 lol.
    In my first readthrough I loved feast because of the vibe and the state of the world its in.
    But I wasn't really a good attentive reader back then.
    I'm reading the series again now (up to agot). We'll see how I feel this time.

    My guy, I'm sorry but I like brutality, betrayal, gore. This fantasy became instantly 2nd favorite. This is where I want the fantasy go. Plus brilliant story telling like never before. I wish star wars did something like this.
