“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning

My Granddad died *_from_* WWI in 1962, when I was just 18 months old. My Mom & Aunt hadn't realized I remembered anything about him when I'd started telling them about our last visit to the hospital & riding up in the freight elevator (they prohibited children) & my Granddad jokingly yelling at them to stop fussing at me for climbing all over him. I kept rattling the metal rails on his bed, then looking at him. He understood exactly what I meant & he said, "Yes, 'Doll-Doll', they put me in a crib just like you have!". He died that night. They think he'd been hoarding his pills. He had severe damage to his lungs from mustard gas & only one shoulder from a mortar going off while he was rescuing another soldier. 1/2

2/2 When my Gramma died, I got a little lapdesk she had that she'd stored every love letter he'd written to her while he was overseas. He'd been injured in Aug. 1917, but had to stay in France to recuperate until Nov. 3rd, 1917. They were married the very next day. My Gramma wasn't even going to wear a wedding dress, but her sister convinced her to, so they all dressed up in their finest regalia & had a beautiful service. I'd love to get copies of the letters to KnightSGC, if they'd be interested in using them for something special. I've never shared them outside of family before, but I know how all of you feel about such things & you'd honor their memory and not mock them. Obviously, they're not x-rated, as this was a different time, but they're deeply personal. What do you think?

So far I've seen Flanders seems to honor the deaths from ww1 the most.
      Especially Ypres.
Gigantic graveyards, a gate and walls with the names of dead or missing soldiers on.
Every single day they go out at 8 pm to play 'the last post' on trumpet. No matter what weather.
They stopped when in ww2 Ypres got invaded by Germany. But the day they got it back they instantly did it again.

I think one of the biggest impact that World War I had was that it did away with the notion that is always honorable to serve one’s country or that going to war for your country was always a righteous thing to do. I believe after World War I people began to believe that war was only necessary in order to right wrongs.

Absolutely insane, the number of all of these men who were killed. The thing about learning history, is you mostly see numbers. What we often forget is that each individual number, isn’t just another number. It’s someone just like you and me, who’s life was just as complex. It’s tough to think about that when you see those images of cemeteries full of crosses, that all look so similar.

Today is the day of days lest we forget their sacrifice. Many paid the ultimate price to defend their homelands for the sake of pride. It truly wasn't a war to end all wars but it was a war to Dethrone Empires. So long as our Republic stand strong and our people United there is still a chance that their sacrifice will not be in vain.

Imagine being a British or French soldier, you survive the war to end all wars get to go home, start a family have kids, have a son then 20 years later the Germans start another world war and you have to send your son to fight in what you believe will be a repeat of the war you fought

Its wild to think humans even 100 years ago was capable of such firepower and aggression. When men had no choice but to live or to die nothing in-between.
