  • India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a campaign to revitalize yoga in the land where it was born, and that starts with his soldiers who take yoga to improve mind and body control. Major Garrett reports on how some Americans say Indian yoga simply would not translate in the U.S.

I'm an American who studied the philosophy of Yoga by listening to countless hours of lectures by Yogis long before I tried the 'exercise' at the gym. Sure, the classes were nice to go to once a week, but they didn't understand anything about the actual philosophy of it. I love the various types of Yoga because they help me reconnect with my body when I find myself trying to dissociate from it all day long. It helps me relax and become more centered. It helps me get a handle on my emotions. I love it. I've studied Yoga Nidra a lot and have listened to Swami Niranjananda for hours on end. I'm amazed at how much wisdom there is in it. It seems like Amercians are more interested in using "namaste" as a Narcissistic manipulation tactic than anything meaningful. The other day I tried to do some Western Yoga with my wife by watching a CZcams video, and she started going off about how dangerous the moves were. She'd taken Karate and all the bouncing in stretches and launching forward off of a stretched muscle freaked her out. She refuses to continue. So yeah, American "Yoga" is BS. Totally agree. I actually found this video because I was doing a search for "real yoga". I'm looking for something like the Eastern Chinese Tai Chi my former boss used to teach after work. You know -- legit moves that you can't learn from some preppy 20-something selling Doterra oils and other MLM 'health' crap on the side after class. A class where the instructor doesn't constantly call the moves "yummy" every two minutes. Legit yoga. If anyone has any links, I'd really appreciate them.

If you are focusing on the exercise or stretching part you are probably concentrating on the tail of an elephant. Yog philosophy says you should be a Vegan, avoid alcohol, non vegetarian food, wear simple, loose cotton clothes and lead a simple life. Reduce your belongings, reuse and recycle things. Thats the way Indian Yogis live. I haven't seen any American not drinking or smoking or a pure veg. There may be but the percentage is very low. In short, Yog for Americans is like the story - six blind men and an elephant. But, i appreciate the interest generated in the mind of Americans regarding Yog. All the best.

In Sanskrit, all syllables are pronounced and the ‘ga’ must be spoken at the end of the word, so it is transliterated as yoga. I am from india and i know yoga doesn't belong to just indians or hindus, like gravity doesn't belong to the british. American do it in american style and chinese are doing it in the china model. *There is no yoga police to catch you if you do it wrong* .
If you do it wrong, you wont get the benifits, like in a breathing asana (xcercise) if you don't push and pull air as asked from the lungs, the lungs wont get exercised properly. This is very important for soldiers and sports people. If you do an asana to improve flexibility and circulation but you are lazy and don't want to stretch, you just wont get the benefits. That is plain common sense.
Also, mass yoga classes like of baba ramdev are much more relaxed and people do it as much as they can. Many just sit out the difficult poses. But if you are serious, like you want to be a yoga teacher or enter some yoga competition then you go to strict yoga school run by some yogacharya.

+Akshay Chandrashekar As someone who has wandered in and out of a consistent Yoga practice over a number of years, I can see that the acceptance of Yoga as a form of physical exercise which can help with mindfulness and other health issues has increased. But it's a rare experience to hear a Yoga instructor go into any of the history of the poses and the sense of knowledge and history that Yoga is borne out of, even if the instructor is just referring to the poses in their Sanskrit names. The intent of my question was to find out if the way Yoga is taught in the West or even thought of in the US can be changed to stoke the same interest that many practitioners have for the spiritual benefits of Yoga as they do for the physical benefits.

I am a practitioner of yoga over almost 40 years. I was extremely surprised by this US TV emission about US yoga. The indians are right. Yoga is not just the physical exercises. The physical exercises prepare the body for the meditation session. This is the aim of the physical exercises. The meditation session is the most important part of yoga. A "classical" yoga session must include: a) body warm exercises; b) breathing exercises; c) physical exercises; d) relaxation; e) meditation. It usually takes 2 h a complete yoga session.

Don't call Yoga in India, Indian Yoga. Respect where it came from by addressing it as simply Yoga. It's Westernized Yoga that needs two words or hyphenation. We in the West has made it into an industry based on looks, not spiritual development towards enlightenment.
Yoga, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Karate, Meditation, Kung Fu all take deep discipline to master and understand since it combines body, mind, and soul. They strive to discipline the body of it's physical limits, the mind of it's thoughts, and the soul of its connection. All of these, when done correctly provides the real balance all humans need. This is one of the many benefits of having gone through the true discipline.
Benefits for what ails us and keeps us tethered do not come easy. So if you're just looking to feel and look nice, fine, go Western. But if you're looking for enlightenment, get ready to get schooled. That's when the real work begins.

Most people love my classes but I can tell a lot of other people would rather attend a stretch class - and they have my blessings to leave the room!! There's no such thing as American Yoga and I hope there will never be, since the predominant tendency of this country is to turn everything into a highly profitable business. With all that being said, I'm still happy that more people are turning to Yoga. Hopefully the milenar wisdom will remain and Yoga will conquer new and sincere adepts. Peace!

"american" yoga and the people who teach it, are a joke. Thanks, Madonna. Before Madonna showed off her mad yoga skills in the 90s, inspiring the millions of people who do yoga and turned a self-improvement system into a billion-dollar industry, i was the only person i knew, who did yoga, for years. pose. stop. pose. stop. that is the instruction from the Hatha yoga books of the 80s. I was lucky enough to do my first yoga class in Kolkata in 2005 and two immersive teacher training courses in India in the last seven years, which opened my eyes to the traditional Hatha practice and the history and philosophy of yoga too. That said, I really only got the tip of the iceberg!
As has been said in the comments, what we call yoga in the West is like one small piece of a very big puzzle. I love the traditional approach. It completely changed the way I practice and gave me a chance to fully understand each pose. In many ways, I feel Westerners like to keep moving in a yoga class to keep themselves busy. Many experienced practitioners really struggle when it's time to sit still for 20 mins, including many teachers. If it's a traditional Hatha class they will sneak in a few extra poses while everybody else is holding one pose.
My Indian teacher told me they would be hit with sticks if they were losing concentration in the pose and that they had to hold some poses for 60 mins without moving. I think traditionally it's much more like Samurai culture. Many Indian yogis felt inspired or were instructed by their teachers to actively export yoga to the Western World. And obviously, a lot of this happened via the US. Whatever it is these days at least it brings benefits to many millions of people who probably wouldn't be open to it in its original form. It's sad that it's watered down but great that it has reached so many people.
I always like the simple definition from The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali; 'Yoga is the ceasing of the fluctuations of the mind', the poses, breathing techniques, and many other practices are the tools to achieve this.

Honestly yoga is just a way of mental rest and getting in touch with mind and body. The New Age yoga practiced in the west probably don't have a lot to do with traditional yoga. So why call it that and to be honest christian yoga isn't to far fetched. Because most cultures had some kind of "yoga". We just called it worship and now we are bringing it back, just with a new and fancy word. Since we outlawed that kind of stuff in the west.
Just look at how they pray in Islam etc. call it getting in touch with your god or what ever you want the purpose is the same as yoga and it is probably pretty important for mental health, since no culture on earth didn't have some kind of worship before "the rise of science". That is probably also the reason why the modern medical institution have so many problems despite being able to cure pretty much any disease at this point.

Many in India in the 80s never practiced Yoga because the teachers made it look so hard to them. Now we do have lot of Yoga Teachers who encourage people and make it easy to understand. The depiction of Yoga practice in India is not 100 percent accurate. Yes there is a pre-conceived notion that there is a right way to do Yoga and doing it wrong can sometimes cause problems for example a Pregnant lady better not do ab exercises, similar goes with Yoga. A good Yoga teacher will guide you with exceptions. But thats not to say that we should just keep worrying about the method. I myself practice Fat loss Yogic exercises and can see its benefits. Yoga simply is untiring workout + meditation = healthy mind + body. :)

Who cares if you learn American style yoga or Indian ? You have to start somewhere.
And if you like yoga and stick with it, then you can study it further and learn it from an Indian purist.
You should not discourage people from improving their lives.

Everywhere they teach you the same boring old fashioned Yoga asanas like the sun salutation with its limited effects. So it does not matter where you learn these few postures, in India or the West. You can even learn it from CZcams.

@Dustin scruggs there is boundary which keeps you separated from rest of the universe. that is your physical body. and yoga actually means 'union' of those two entities by blurring this boundary.... yoga has more spiritual meaning . its much more than a workout or exercise.'fluctuations of the mind to stillness.' this description only says about a pretty primary benefit of yoga... do it right with deeper understanding and it will completely change your life...

Until you break out of the western mindset, you'll never understand this. I didn't before. People who call this evil are either extremely ignorant, stupid, or a combination of both. Yoga truly shows you how to control your emotions. It increases your confidence. Unbalanced breathing is the cause of anxiety, fear, procrastination, etc but again most just won't get it.

Yoga means Union, if Yoga is done properly you'll experience a Union with the Universe.
Right now you experience only your body, but with Yoga one can experience whole city or planet as a part of himself

"There is no yoga fashion" - oh lawd.... "American yoga" majorly isn't yoga. It is Asana. The Sutras only mention Asana once! Yoga developed from the Samkhya philosophy as a method of direct experience of consciousness. But I guess people need to start somewhere

Yoga is from India, and as it mentioned in the video, it's at least 4,000 years old. There's more of a spiritual aspect involved in the real yoga in India, it isn't just exercise. I feel like American yoga is disrespectful to the real yoga and the attitude toward the strictness of Indian yoga is like a slap in the face and invalidating, and all that we focus on in America is the physical appearance of our body that we'll get from our form of yoga. We should be focusing a lot more on the spiritual side of it and do it the way they do in India, do that, and the rest will fall into place. So what if the real yoga is hard, it's the correct form of it, it isn't something that we're supposed to be able to do overnight or in a few weeks, it's a long process that involves mind, body, and spirit.

@chandan sinha It's disappointing because as an American and wanting to learn the real type of Yoga, it's very hard, if not impossible to find a place that teaches the true form and purpose of Yoga the way they do in India.

Notice how Star Wars even highlighted similar aspects? The Jedi became so disconnected and transformed into more of a political group and war strategists than Jedi. They lost touch with the spirituality and connection to the force. Interesting how that works...

Yoga in West is more sexualized and women specifically wear tight clothing like they do in other sports or gym. Whereas, in Yoga you are supposed to feel relaxed and open with loose light clothing and fresh air not closed rooms.

Yes it’s not Yoga.... it’s Yog.
Yog Sanskrit word it’s meaning is joining. Now what we join...it’s answer is join our soul to ultimate God Soul or united our soul with God. There is a Doha or verse Sither sukhum asanam ....means sit in a pose that is stable for long time by which it stable mind this result in feelings no pain no disturbance and this is the starting level of exploring ourselves toward united with God. Yog is trained our body and mind. There is eight limbs of father of Yog Guru Patanjali . Hope I little bit explain what is Yog......
