The most terrifying thing about the war on Skaro that led to the creation of the Daleks is that both sides were once prosperous, vibrant societies with advanced technology. But once the two sides begin warring with each other, both societies degraded into ruin and they're eventually reduced to using barbed wire and bayonets, fighting over ruins and festering pits that were once cities and farmland. The war goes on for so long that neither side can remember what Skaro originally looked like, or who even started the war in the first place. Chances are whoever invented the handmines is long dead - and the mines themselves have essentially become wild animals, feeding off stragglers from both sides.
Skaro is a truly horrific setting, and it explains why Davros was so eager to seal his own people away inside armoured tanks and remove their compassion, as it was the only way he foresaw his species surviving in the living nightmare their world had become.

"The Doctor leaves with his TARDIS. But somehow Davros manages to escape ..." hold right there. It's Doctor Who. Davros didn't manage to escape on his own. The Doctor eventually helped him, which results in creating the concept of mercy in Daleks. It's Doctor Who, so it's of course Timey Wimey. Just because the Doctor left, it doesn't mean that Davros managed to save himself by a miracle or anything. We've just interrupted the flow of history to watch events in the present, but we eventually return to the past, when the Doctor at the end of the episode decides to finish his job and save Davros. By helping Davros, he's saving Clara stuck in the Dalek casing. That's how time in Doctor Who works.
