  • I finally was able to recover my ‪@insta360‬ x3 footage. A couple of things:
    1. I set the camera wrong! My fault, not theirs. I had it on single lens 4K and some other issues which meant the Insta cam just focused on whatever. In fact this video came out Upside Down and I had to fix it with ‪@AdobeCreativeCloud‬ Premiere Pro.
    2. There LOOKS like a whole lot of side to side oscillation on landing but it wasn’t like that. Again, Insta360 just interpreted whatever it wanted. It was a little bumpy but not as bad as it looks.
    3. I felt really good about this landing even though you see me flop forward.
So this was the landing from my 8000 foot flight. From around 1200 feet down to about 300 feet it was really bumpy. In fact you see a negative G load on my Gaggle chart at one point because I sort of fall out of a thermal.
But under the tree line it smoothed out a lot. This was my first landing where I actually put it almost where I wanted too. I was maybe 50 feet short of my spot but I was good. I got out of the seat fully and hung down, killed the motor at tree level, and tried to keep eyes on the horizon.
My pilot friend and observer said I held a little too much brake coming in and didn’t have enough flare left. I also don’t think I used all my brake to flare, but with the funky Insta360 action, I can’t swivel it around to check. I also know I didn’t run fast enough, as the glider overshot me as I flopped over, and landed in front of me.
But: Nothing damaged, machine or organic.
I’ll give it another try soon!

The Iris people said I was landing downwind, which is one reason i had such a hard time. When I took off at 930 or so, wind was out of the north. When I landed 90 minutes later, there was very little to no wind, but apparently what wind there was, had switched to coming out of the south.

@@rule1dontgosplat wth man, you aint putting up a wind sock and double checking it upon landing? Shit, if I try land downwind on my piper, there's no way in hell I'm staying on my feet. ALWAYS put up a windsock at the LZ. Airport windsocks are too heavy to be much help. Winds changing direction during a flight, is about as common as dandelions. Not too bad for a down wind landing I guess.

@@rule1dontgosplat most excellent! FInd a sock you like. Eventually it will become a source of sheer comfort. I've grown to like mine so much, I put it up, even when there's others nearby. Kind of like a calling card or 'welcome home' sign. Its amazing how you get so used to reading YOUR sock, that you can see whats going on from afar.
