***** It's tradition. The "Grosser Zapfenstreich" goes back in tradition (in part) to the 16th century when the soldiers who were out in a village or town in the evening were supposed to go back to camp. Then their Officer together with a drummer and a flute player would basically "round them up".
In this form here in the video the Zapfenstreich goes back to the 19th century Prussia.

A nation that held back the might of the Roman Empire, that grew from a small nation surrounded by more powerful nations and states to be a player on the world stage should be proud of its military history and should let it shine. War is horrible but it is a part of the human experience. Professionalism in it ought not to be seen as anything other than what it is, excellence in the realm of martial skill. I am proud of my German heritage and Germany should be too!

@Teufelsnachbar667 I know which groups you speak of and we have them here too. traditions of the western world are constaintly under assault from those on the far left. I must say though, there is something awe inspiring about the old marsch films. while these guys are clearly very well drilled, they do not seem to have the same energy that their wehrmacht counterparts had. still it is nice to see that this tradition has not been totally eliminated.

And, yes, this English lady does realise the German presence during the Battle of Waterloo. But, please, not the goose step! This looks much more manly, but I appreciate it's none of my business. And reclaim your iron cross. Good to see your pride back in your army - I gather some of your guys helped ours in Kosovo (our lads were under-equipped as usual) when the French wouldn't :)

The Prussian military tradition and the professionalism that should continue today in the German military is nothing to be ashamed of or hide. It should not be confused with the sad period in German history under the National Socialists. Germany and her history of military professionalism has been emulated around the globe because it excelled in martial training and elevated it to a point that other nations, whether secretly or opernly, admired and desired it for their own armed forces.

@soutache thats true but is false to say that the modern german army is dont embracing any references to the 33-45 period. The camuflage pattern is very similar to the Waffen SS, they still use the MG-42, the air forces are called Luftwaffe (a 33-45 name), the Panzergrenadier nomenclature was decided by Hitler himself and its still in use, the tanks and vehicles are using animal names like in WW2. In my opinion the german army in strictly unpolitical form has to be proud also of ww2 soldiers.
