  • J.K. Rowling is at it again. This time, the Harry Potter author picked a fight with Jessie Earl, a 30-year-old CZcamsr who recently called for fans to boycott an upcoming video game over the author’s well-documented anti-trans rhetoric. For this debate, we have a varied panel with members from many communities, trans community, lgbtq+ community, cis people. I feel we all can learn from each other tonight during this important eye opening discussion.

What if someone makes a mod that makes an enemy character look like JK Rowling?

Knowing the modding community, this is very likely to happen!

i'm fine with any kind of mod, simply because you decide what you want to download and install, what's more free speech than that? no modder should be banned ever

As a gay gaming creator, I get lots of hate as well, but we have to weather it. I just don't agree with the attitude that "you're either with me or against me" to be considered an ally. To enact change, we should be donating money and/or time to non-profit organizations, Trevor Project, Lambda Legal, etc.

why do people in this debate in general not just this video. but in general.
not know the difference between "royalties" and "licensing fees"
Rowling no longer owns the IP, she holds license to certain things within the franchise.
meaning the whole argument that's constantly being brought up, "well the dev's are already paid, so it does not hurt them if its boycotted" literally applies to Rowling. she has already been paid for what ever licenses the devs needed for their game. and the sales of the game will not affect the amount she gets, what so ever. because the wizarding world IP is not owned by her. she does not get Royalties from that. she gets royalties from the harry potter books and her other original works. and that's it. the rest are licensing deals, which are 1 time payments unaffected by the sales of the game. (or in case of fantastic beast movie) and usually agreed upon before anyone has even punched one line of code into a computer.
meaning boycotting the game does absolutely nothing.
what boycotting the game does, is pushing people that just want to play a damn game and not be confronted with endless cancel culture which is trying to make every facet of our lives political in some way or other. to the other side of the political isle.
and i wonder if you should not maybe consider that, that might not be a good political strategy.

As the host, I try to remain neutral on this but I need to correct the FACTS. The game studio and the game devs in many interviews did confirm that the author would recieve ROYALTIES from every copy sold. However, they would not confirm what % or what amount that would be. She very likely got a licensing fee agreement AS WELL.
So now, you do you, if you want to buy the game you buy it, if you don't, you don't.
Not saying you are doing it, but many people act like they feel they are doing something wrong and feel the need to twist the facts to justify to themselves they are making the right choice by changing the facts (to 'sleep better at night'?). If you want to buy and play the game, just say that. It's fine. Doesn't make you a monster. But you can confirm these facts pretty easily with a quick search.
Thank you for watching the debate and for your comment.

@@asparagusdaiquiri6434 the developers have stated that they "based it off some of her work" and Rowling herself has stated that other then licensing. she is not involved at all.
the game does not mention harry potter in it. nor is harry potter in the title of the game.
the licenses are for name drops like "weasley" and for locations within the castle she holds the rights to.
the harry potter IP which is what Rowling owns, is not attached to this game. but elements of it are licensed out to the game. 99% of the times, license agreements are upfront. before development even starts and they are not raised or lowered by the sales of the game.
this game is attached to "the wizarding world" which is attached to Warner bro's who owns that IP, which is where the royalties go. and not to Rowling.
which means boycotting this game will not do anything for Rowling's bottom line. she already got paid for the license , she got her bag. and the sales will do nothing to raise or lower the amount in her bank account.
making the concept of boycotting it absolutely pointless.

Common sense & the whole of serious professional social thinkers, disagrees with the idea, that enjoying a creators work, sets automatically a symbolism of agreement, to their convictions. It fucking just does not.

    • @asparagusdaiquiri6434
      @asparagusdaiquiri6434  Před rokem

I agree with this sentiment. But I feel this discussion was more about financially supporting said creator, and not enjoying their work.

@@asparagusdaiquiri6434 Well the thing there is, that it does not look like a amount of Money that could significantly incrise her abilitys, of political influence. She can found as many terf activism groups, like she wants, its always a small majority of ultra victimhood status urging, identiity politics possesed narcissists; and even "normal" feminists, are already not taken serious, by indentity politic sceptics, what the majority of people are. Even to the biggest expo, were she talks about her convictions from a podium, will most people come for the buffet only, & laugh over this "feminazis" blablabla, when going out. & Books, pampflets etc that she brings out about the matter, will be readed by ones that are already in this mindset anyways. She is really in a ideological position, from that out no amount of money, can make her taken more serious.

Not supporting the boycott doesn't mean that you are an ennemie of the trans community, but any transphobia or hateful comment will be removed from this chat. Everyone on all sides are welcome to voice their opinion, and I strongly beleive and trust in all of you to keep it respectful.
