    • @foldionepapyrus3441
      @foldionepapyrus3441 Před rokem +50

      Indeed, though I have to agree with him this one doesn't really offer up anything much new in most areas to be worth getting quite so excited about. It is the same game done very very slightly differently, for the most part improved but also improved at making the annoying parts of predecessor even more annoying... Majora's Mask it ain't, that one took an already well crafted game that contained story and puzzle challenges and a good world to explore and really turned it on its head, and without reusing the world map in quite such a copy paste way...
      Don't get me wrong though I do think it a decent game, and worth keeping the switch around gathering dust so long for, it is just still rather disappointing in many ways when you think of what it could have been. Though the shrines I have to agree are actually better on the whole there are still one heck of a heap of them but boy does enemy health scale stupendously making combat that was kinda clunky and pause filled changing weapons even worse...

    • @brycebitetti1402
      @brycebitetti1402 Před rokem +30

      @DWFTW Durability is both better and worse. Early game, it's a god damned nightmare. Weapons break even faster than in BOTW and are significantly less powerful unless they're fused. It does, however, get much better later on. Different weapon types have a lot of different attributes and fuse results differ greatly depending on what you fuse to what. You can very quickly craft weapons with absolutely ludicrous damage output and if you play your cards right, you can upgrade durability substantially as well. Time will tell whether or not it was an improvement overall. It does add many more options but that also means a lot more hassle at times, and different kinds of players will react differently to them.

    • @hedgehoundable
      @hedgehoundable Před rokem +33

      @@foldionepapyrus3441 To be fair, Majora's Mask saw a lot of heavy reuse of assets as well, just in a new world. And the transformation masks while visually appealing all function just like Link's old tools with some variances. Tears of the Kingdom isn't so different with the heavy reuse of assets and tweaking of old tools but what makes both games shine is the content of the world. Majora's Mask had a brand new world but way smaller than the last game which made it dense with content and rich NPCs who ingratiate themselves to the player with their stories and lives that they carry out during the constant groundhogs day loop. Tears of the Kingdom takes place in the same world a few years later, so people familiar with all the characters will get to enjoy seeing who's grown in that time and what they're getting up to.
      All this is to say, both games are stellar even if they reuse a lot of stuff from the game they're jumping off from. They just do it differently in their own way.

    Officially the first person on the entirety of youtube willing to actually be real and not give massive sloppy toppy to nintendo with 0 criticisms. Don't get me wrong the game is amazing, but all the reviews saying "guys, they did it, they made the perfect game, everything is completely perfect!" really grind my gears. They still used the memories formula for story, albiet the memories were a bit better. The present story you actually play through was even worse, you get copy-pasted scenes at the end of each dungeon, you help the same races, and every cutscene has at least 3 instances of "IS THAT ZELDA?!" rather than actual compelling narrative. They hyped us up with Ganondorf making us think we'd actually get a complex villain this time around, and then when you actually go fight him it's just normal combat for about 2 minutes until Ganondorf cries like a baby and becomes Mindless Calamity 2.0 electric boogaloo long edition. The dungeons still sucked. It's like they saw the minority of people saying "we want themed dungeons" and proceeded to do the bare minimum and say "this temple is fire themed because... it takes place by death mountain again" without actually making them more engaging or interesting. They are so uninteresting, just convoluted structures that made it easier to climb or abuse zonai devices to each objective rather than actually solve some sort of dungeon. This game absolutely did not fix every issue BotW had and we should absolutely NOT be creaming and saying "this is perfect, change nothing." BotW and TotK are great but still weaker transitions to open world than Elden Ring was.

    There is something to note: There are a number of items that, when fused to weapons, *do* have unique effects and allow some of that creativity you were looking for at 5:00. For example, the Zonai spring will launch away enemies, large flat items will hurl a gust of wind forward, gems will make the weapon fire magic projectiles, etc.

    • @herogear_art
      @herogear_art Před rokem +158

      And in a more subtle way, it can change the weapon types too. A sword can cut down trees, but add a rock and now it can break up mineral deposits. If you only have a whacking stick, attach any kind of blade (or axe shaped stone) and now you can cut down trees.
      It’s really understated how this improves the aspect of weapon breakage. You never have to rely on finding the right weapon type and hold onto it for dear life like BotW. You can build the weapons you need, as needed, with all kinds of stored parts and environmental items.

    Funny thing about the ascend power is that it allegedly wasn't in the game through much of the development. The devs just kept getting annoyed at having to leave caves, so they developed a command to bring people up to the next level above. They then questioned "If we are getting annoyed and wanting to use this command, won't other people?" And thus, it became a power, and they started developing around it.

    I just finished the game yesterday, and I agree with all of this. The story does have some dynamic cutscenes, so I was surprised all the Sage cutscenes were identical.
    For example, I randomly stumbled upon 2 key objects for the main story while bumbling around looking for a thunder dragon claw (that I never found) for a side quest. When I finally got around to continuing the main story and the characters told me to start the journey for said objectives, Link quietly told them he did it already and all the characters were comically shocked and I was pretty much got told to go right to the final boss whenever I felt like it. It feels like they could've put different details about the past with each sage so you'd get a clearer picture of the story as you saved Hyrule. The first one I did (the Goron) had one line about it being the first time I'd heard the story, but the rest of the dialogue was identical in 4 different cultures - which seemed out of place for all the detail and personality they put in the townspeople at those locations.

    My biggest annoyance with the game was, especially early on but also just in general, entering shrines. You'd explore an area with a cool vehicle you built, find a shrine, enter it, and bam! Your car despawned. I loved building vehicles out of random stuff I found and taking them halfway across the map. The stable at the bottom left of the main Hyrule area has a big stone slab with four big wheels and a steering stick, for a good while this was my only steering stick available to me because I hadn't found any areas that gave me any to deploy, and I didn't have autobuild yet. I went there several times just to go on a long car trip with those wheels and the stick. And I found loads of shrines on the way. And I could never enter any of them because then I'd lose my car! I recently spent three entire hours just doing shrine after shrine until I was caught up with all the shrines I discovered but skipped because I did not want to lose my car. Even once you get access to all the parts to build it yourself, it just feels wasteful to have to resummon and rebuild it out of brand new parts. It really should remember the vehicle you arrived in and not despawn that.

    But seriously, I love this game, and even I have my complaints about it. My eyebrow was quirking higher and higher until he said "for expansion packs" and I just had to say "okay, fair enough." I absolutely lost it at "emotionally stunted twink", because only time Link displays any feeling is when he's embarrassed to the point of passing out when a giant woman kisses him, or drags him down to her sex dungeon for a routine hip breaking cause we don't want to die in three hits of a Lynel's backhand.
    I mean let's face it, stroke for stroke we've got basically the same plot as BotW, even if they did find the most creative way yet of locking Zelda in a closet for the entire plot because the closet is now in the sky and consists of her own entire body. That kinda pissed me off, and led to the rest of the time I was wearing the Fierce Deity armor for the rest of the game being an exercise in me role playing how absolutely done Link is with nothing left to fight for except an entire kingdom of absolute morons he already saved once and yet never seem to recognize him. Is the main dietary supplement of Hyrule lead paint or something?
    Gotta give some big props to the final boss fight, of course, even if the third phase of the fight does suffer a bit of Dark Beast Ganon syndrome. The actual Ganondorf fight itself is good, and a great cap to the game's mechanics.

    I can agree about the Sage Awakening cutscenes really needing more variation but I was honestly impressed with how much else was placed in the world itself after Breath of the Wild. In line with the world gradually picking itself up again there’s a lot more people about and significantly more in terms of sidequesting than before, the game even indicating how involved the quest is.
    Even with monster camps somewhat arbitrarily strewn aboutc it feels like a ton of the space within the map is well-curated which is impressive for a game of this scale. That, plus the addition of caves which can stretch for varied amounts of underground real estate.

    Stating that just because something is good (or even amazing) doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement, and that if the game *was* perfect people wouldn't be sweeping the story under the rug and claiming it doesn't matter because of everything else it does is exactly the kind of insight I enjoy and respect Yahtzee for having. Because it's true. Perfection is a rather hard target to hit, and just because a game *is* good doesn't mean it doesn't have flaws, or that those flaws should be ignored... nor does the existence *of* those flaws stop a game from being fun, engaging, and interesting.

But they definitely are considered to be good things for which appreciation is entirely valid where present, so finding a game to be worse off for their absence must therefore be an equally valid complaint.

      @mrshmuga9 Před rokem +7

      @@2canwin635 I agree that no media has to be “perfect” (however stringently you define that) to be a masterpiece. But what people call “masterpieces” these days a lot of times have a noticeable amount of flaws or boring/blandly designed content. They have a bias towards it so much that they’ll excuse any criticism/flaw as irrelevant, regardless of how impactful it is on the game.
      For example, Mario Odyssey is a fun game, but people call it a masterpiece when at least half of the moons are hidden in dumb places like the average box. But more importantly, it teaches you to recognize patterns for moons/secrets, and then isn’t consistent with the result.
      Here’s how secrets work in most games: player explores, notices a hidden area, gets reward. They’ll recognize the pattern that lead to the secret, and use that knowledge going forward.
      Here’s a general idea (but not exact) of how it worked in Odyssey. You might look behind a waterfall and find a moon or a secret level that leads to a moon. So you register that knowledge, and be mindful if you see another one. But instead, out of 10 waterfalls in the game, that one waterfall you found was literally the only one with a reward in it. Tons of these patterns exist in the game which makes it a frustrating experience. Because it teaches you to recognize a pattern (because there’s multiple “waterfalls” in the game to apply this knowledge to), but ultimately punishes you because the reward/result is inconsistent. It makes you feel like the game wasted your time and makes you weary to trust the game when it sets up other patterns.
      This isn’t some minor gripe like “oh this one mini-game is annoying”. This is a core part of the game’s design philosophy that’s deeply flawed. Because it doesn’t feel like it’s designed with intent at all. That shouldn’t be ignored.

    I definitely can't say the game is perfect though. In trying to appeal to all crowds they don't foist the paraglider on you, while still designing at least 1/5th of the shrines around you having it, in addition to having NPCs expect you to have it. And since you're not forced to go get it, anytime you run into a bit or a shrine where it's required, you just sorta have to leave disappointed and move onto the next place/area/thing.
    Obviously it's an easy frustration to fix. The game clubs you over the head with, "Go to Lookout Landing." If you've not been there after beating a major temple, the NPCs related to it will have an additional line of dialogue telling you to, "Thanks for being a bad ass! Go to Lookout Landing."
    "If only you could fly like a Rito."

    The amount of asset reuse in TOTK is frankly inexcusable, especially considering it costs $10 more than the base game:
    - they reused the same 3 weapon movests and did not add a single new one
    - the majority of enemies are copied from BOTW 1:1 , they don't have any new attacks
    - combat mechanics are identical, not even slightly tweaked (flurry rush is still bugged and triggers when you dodge before an attack has even started or after an attack has ended and missed you)
    - Shrines are structured the same with 1-2 micro puzzles that you usualy finish in 90 seconds if you skip the optional chest (no thanks, 10 arrows aren't worth it)
    - Temples are the same tier as Divine beasts, some are even worse like the Water Temple
    - Depths are just an inverted heightmap and reskinned enemies+bosses and only exists for farming Zonaite and finding "unique" costumes
    - Said "unique" costumes are the DLC ones from BOTW (and you still can't upgrade them LOL)

I literally just decided that I didn't like the Fire Temple so I sequence broke/cheesed almost the entire thing and the game just let me. There have also been a bunch of puzzles where I completely ignore the intended path and just do something weird to solve it.
      The shrines giving upgrades and the islands themselves aren't really the rewards, it's the puzzles you have to complete to get it. When you start, you're bombarded with NPCs that just tell you about different mechanics of the game, before being told exactly what to do. Even the divine beasts, which were very open in the order you completed them in, had been given to you in such a way that it was obvious the game wanted you to go to a very specific one first

    • @lunarazure9969
      @lunarazure9969 Před rokem +23

      I actively hated that opening walk and talk. Not because it was boring, but because it felt like a completely waste of potential.
      They start you off with the master sword, 20 hearts, and full stamina. You're in full "I'm the hero who defeated the blights and saved Hyrule" mode. And what happens? You fight 3 keese and watch Zelda take pictures while she plot dumps on why you're hanging out in a cave. And then you're immediately shoved into a cutscene where Link gets absolutely annihilated and loses all his upgrades.
      It's such a waste. Use the chance to start off with a little tutorial dungeon. Teach players some basic mechanics like flurry rushes and sprinting and climbing, something to utilize all those hearts and stamina that they gave you. Fight some some enemies so you feel like a hero. Heck, fight some normal bokoblins, then fight some gloomified bokoblins to do a little bit of foreshadowing to Ganondorf's seal weakening. Have Link borrow the Purah Pad and take some pictures, then hand it back to Zelda for later. Do SOMETHING besides just 3 keese and Zelda saying "There's this weird fog that's making people sick!" If you're going to make the playable opening that awful, then just make it all one long cutscene instead.

      @@lunarazure9969 on one hand if they did that i feel like they'd have to change a lot about the great sky island, because that already exists to tutorialise a lot of stuff (including your new abilities, which you wouldnt have while exploring the castle's depths.) on the other hand i kind of feel like they planned to do something like that initially (in some of the teaser trailers you see link and zelda crossing a bridge, stopping at an underground pond while zelda's dondon has a drink, etc implying there was more to that initial sequence that got excised) and 2. god it would be fucking cool to do a dungeon with zelda beside you as an actual character for once

      The story is perfectly fine. The Zelda crew just seem to have no ability to write decent dialogue, or craft a good scene with any cinematography. It's like they forgot a century of film and TV experience and just have the camera passively watch while characters infodump and deliver dialogue with long pauses between them. If you're taking control away from the character by forcing them to loaf around or watch a cutscene this is a perfect opportunity to use your control over camera, lighting, dialogue, pacing etc to deliver a great scene.
      Literally the next game I played after I played TOTK was Hitman and that has a corny tacked on plot that is literally just an excuse to stick together random rich people in exciting locations all over the world, but even it blew Zelda out of the water because at least it deployed it's tropes with genre acceptable dialogue, kept to the point and had moody shots from interesting angles.

      @@lunarazure9969 That seems like you've gotten overly attached to your idea of what it should have been. It's okay to say you had a decent idea, it's unreasonable to "actively hate" something just because it doesn't do the exact thing you think it should've done when, as glassphoenix pointed out above, that would've required a complete change of pace of the beginning of the game.

      @@cazzah49 Mostly agreed, though I have a feeling their hands are pretty tied regarding what they can do with dialogue. It feels like the Zelda games are kinda locked in on the idea of the characters being archetypes more than actual people with depth. But the memory sequences in this game do employ a bit of actually dramatic cinematography.

      "Original" map in the sense that, at its core, it's the surface map inverted (all peaks are now troughs and vice versa) and then cleaned up around the edges and given some unique landmarks. If anything the sheer quantity of caves and wells added more truly unique geometry than the depths areas.

      That sense goes away as soon as you realise all the lightroots are in the exact same spots as overworld shrines. You easily spot and mark down all the shrines on the surface, and then the depths is just beelining it to the next lightroot. You don't even have to engage with the light or vehicle mechanics, it's so trivial to just walk and glide there for the vast majority of it. And there's nothing to explore since there's almost no unique content, it's all basically the same. It is a really big missed opportunity

      Zelda is falling and link is diving after her but there is nothing happening. She will never hit the ground and even if you keep diving, you will never pass her. It is unfailable and there was no reason to give the player control. Noticing that nothing was happening immediately broke my immersion and ruined the already weak ending of the game.
