Back when all of those diverse wide-bodies ruled the skies on these trans-pacific routes. In 2003 i flew to Bangkok and 2/3 of the legs were on United 747-400's. Amazing planes!
There’s a feeling of strange obsolescence yet sheer amazement with landing at Kai Tak. I left Hong Kong as a resident in 1992 and while my childhood memories of Kai Tak are sweet, Hong Kong has come such a long way since then. Thanks for the trip down memory lane! Today’s landing at CLK is clinical by comparison, but the views are still great.
You all should visit again! The scenery today is incredible in a very different way. The route from the airport to the city is breathtaking, jumping from island to island on majestic bridges until a grand view of the city presents itself on the final bridge.
@@CL-rm6sb considering SARS and Covid, clinical can be good in some ways 🤓 People wax romantic about old HK, but there certainly are aspects of old HK that I’d rather not see again.
I grew up watching the planes landing + taking off Kai Tak Airport. And I used to have such a huge collection of postcards of various airlines...... Sigh............
I find it remarkable how very much less noise is made today as compared to 1992. This video reminded me of the loud engine noise we once endured during commercial flights.
This brings back so many great memories! My first trip to Hong Kong was in October of 92’ and I still remember flying into Kai Tak on board a Cathay Pacific 747-400 from Los Angeles. I was fortunate to fly there a few more times before Kai Tak was closed forever. Thank you so much for posting this video!
Nowadays, adventure tourists are thrilled by flying into remote airports in ATR or DASH 8 turboprops. But in the eighties and nineties we did our adventures in four-engine wide-bodied jets. I only flew in and out of Kai Tak one time in the early eighties. It must have been even more memorable to have done it at night!
@heiheiwingwing This footage is incredible! I am currently working on a video about Kowloon Walled City for my channel. Would it be possible for me to use this footage in my video?
I wish i could have flown into Kai Tak! On top of downtown. Easy transportation to there. Night life would be fantastic! Wide open town under british rule.
Thank you for uploading this great piece of archival footage. From seeing Tsing Yi without the heavy highway infrastructure to accommodate the Tsing Ma, Ting Kau, and Stonecutter's Bridges, to seeing the rambler channel before the expansion of the container ports, Mei Foo with its harbour-front, and of course the infamous Kowloon Walled City. You were able show so much in such a short video! As a history enthusiast and someone not old enough to have experienced 90's Hong Kong, I just want to say thank you so much!
I flew into Kai Tak in 1992 as well. I remember feeling something was wrong when we appeared to have touched down, but I was so far above the runway; I realized a moment later that I was in business class in the upper deck of a 747, but it had been so many hours (from SFO) in air I forgot. By far, the more memorable side of the plane is starboard; when the pilot pivots the plane on the starboard wing tip to align with the runway, you see buildings seemingly within reach rushing past your window!
Thank You, that's sure refresh my memories ! Priceless clip here ! HONG KONG, a wonderful name of the City, the place I was born, the place I miss a lot !
I wish i could fly to kai tak. I love this approach, you get to see hongkong + the checkerboard hill + kowloon walled city and finally a very strange and cool approach. I wish..
I wasnt even born at the time but this video feels like it was made yesterday. Like i can imagine myself in this time living like a normal person not too long ago
never lived there but when i am watching this i am getting strange feeling. I feel as if I had lived there at the time. I dont know but the city resembles the place I was grown Korea. This poor quality video + the date shown at the time are perfect combination to remind me of my childhood.
Britain kept its word and turned over HK when they had promised to do so. China has not kept its word in ANY respect regarding Hong Kong. It is SO sad.
Britain only leased the New Territories. Hong Kong Island and Kowloon were British possessions. Britain agreed to give it all completely to China in 1997, as long as Hong Kong’s freedoms were guaranteed. Surprising China never fully honoured their side of the deal
@East_Illustrator2818 Nothing in the lease mentioned a 50-year Basic Law, did it? So who was duplicitous? Britain was also contemplating simply ignoring the whole 99-year lease and keeping it in perpetuity. But that was during the 1950s when the UK still thought of itself as a major world power, an illusion that was cruelly shattered in 1956.
This is the year I first landed in Hong Kong with Canadian International airlines. I had so much memories there... I miss that airport that had a soul...
Thanks so much for posting this video. Really enjoyed watching it. Brings back good memories. Im not sure if it was 92 or 93 when I flew into there on a British Airways 747 from Heathrow.
I flew into Hong Kong Kai Tak in 1997 aboard Air India Airbus 310. It was amazing to land there. I wish I could have flown on one of Air India 747's over there. Lovely memories 💜💘
Everton got beat at Oldham live on Sky in the first premier league season the day before this was filmed. Everton captain that day was Dave Watson, who would captain Hong Kong in a friendly international against England in Hong Kong four years later in 1996
I have been going to Hong Kong on a regular basis for the last 8 years, and even in that time it has dramatically changed. Back in 1992 it was very much different there!
That is 1 of the Main Reason why The Airport Authority and Hong Kong British Colonial Government had Decided to Build a New International Airport at Chek lap kok ,Lantau Island 🏝.
In the days when people used to clap when you landed ( really they were just thanking a computer) & Hong Kong was still a well run British Colony. Landed there a few times through the high buildings
This is absolutely amazing quality for a recording from 30 years ago!
Clearer than most security cameras these days😂😂😂
Probably super VHS
No, it isn't really. You must be one of these 'Millenials' I keep hearing about.
Phones were bigger, but the cameras were way better
@@fredemny3304 LMAO I didn't even look at the comments while watching this video and knew what they would be as soon as I did
The walled city looks so dark and eerie. By late 92 it had been fully cleared out of its residents in preparation for demolition
I didn’t know about KWC until long after it was gone 😭
The city was cleared out fully on July 1, 1992, meaning that by this point, it had been abandoned for 4 months

I will never not get sentimental watching landings into Kai Tak. Great view of the Kowloon Walled City in this clip!

Used to be a FO in the last days of Kai Tak. Thank you for this, my balls are sweeting now just like they did then!
Damn that takes me back. Remember this approach from when I came back with the fam after visiting my grandfolks in the early 90's.
Incredible video for 1992! The walled city is something else, like a mashup of so many apartments squeezed into one.
This brings back so much memories 😢
I miss the old Kai Tak and HK so much 😢
Me too!!!

Suprised to hear the cabin announcement of CZ hasn't changed much after decades😂thanks for sharing the video. I was months old when it was recorded.
Thank you for actually marking the places on video!
What a cool video from a bygone era. Thanks for adding the labels, it’s neat to see the Walled City but also other notable places in the area
missed the Checkerboard Board & the right side of the aircraft but still truly incredible as are all videos of wonderful Kai Tak ... Thankyou !!!
Landed there from that approach many times. You could watch TV in the apartments. I'll never forget the shoddy bar!
Absolutely stunning! A very different Hong Kong back then :')

incredibly insane video, so glad to see a landing approach of the airport in this perspective

I remembered flying past Kowloon Walled City in the late 1980s. And old Kai Tak.
Awesome video and thanks for posting. Loved Kai Tak. CLK is great as well.
This absolutely insane! I never thought I would see this!
Very cool how you edited the different waypoints into the video!

Britain foisted a Fifty Year Basic Law upon China before it left, so stop being so dishonest!

saw the checkerboard - wow what a visual ref a then hard right onto R13 amazing skills
What an intriguing approach into Hong Kong! So distinct compared to other airports IMO!

amazing video, even features the walled city!
Believe it or not, I miss the Kai Tak mullah smell !!!
Thx for sharing this great clip ☺
I don't think modern pilots could make this maneuver safely. They don't get enough practice hand-flying.
I don't think I have EVER seen ONE DAY in Hong Kong with CLEAR BLUE SKIES. NEVER!!!
Haha trust me it does happen. Actually a bit more often now, because China’s industries have cleaned up a LOT over the past 10-15 years.
Thank you for the amazing videos, 你的iPhone拍得很漂亮啊🤭
Perfect capture😀 very nice video😀 Greetings from Japan

As seen on the TV show credits for The Knock I believe, the run in was (not this video) with if I recall rightly, a Cathy Pacific B747
