- No filmmaker captures the grandeur and energy of New York like Martin Scorsese. With this sumptuous romance, he meticulously adapted the work of another great New York artist, Edith Wharton, bringing to life her tragic novel of the cloistered world of Gilded Age Manhattan.
THE AGE OF INNOCENCE is available on Criterion Blu-ray/DVD on 13 March 2018. - Krátké a kreslené filmy
Sometimes i forgot that the man who directed "Taxi Driver", "Raging Bull" and "Mean Streets" also directed one of the greatest romance drama films ever made..Scorsese's a genius almost like he can do anything
He also got on record saying that he counts this movie as The Most Violent One he did.
At least in Goodfellas when Joe Peschi threatens to cap someone for “calling him a clown”, it was done upfront. The Gilded Age NYC high society though? Waste you and bury you, just with innuendos!
He even directed Hugo
I feel the same way with his upcoming release. Sensational to hear members of the Osage appreciating Scorsese for his endeavours at filming their past with hubris and respect. But yes, it must have been incredibly startling to watch this film following his previous Goodfellas.
This ain't no _Barry Lyndon._
I was even more shocked that he even directed Hugo, a beloved family movie
An absolutely elegant, beautiful movie. Every part of this makes it worth seeing and definitely worth owning. The cast did a superb job in carrying the dramatic plot. The character development was beautiful, the music was breath-taking, the style really captured its timeframe, and I was on the edge of my seat the entire movie. It perfectly captures the feelings of love, regret, and hopelessness. This is a truly unforgettable movie.
Can we please take a moment to appreciate its soundtrack by Elmer Bernstein? So enchanting
An underrated Scorsese masterpiece
A Masterpiece film. Visually Magnificent. Makes Downton Abbey look like paupers. This was real Elegance. A feast for the eyes!
@@blandinea.2703 Agreed
A feast for the eyes is such a lame expression haha
@@boozalm3715 To each his own.
How’s that for lame?
No lol
I made a video using this movie. I hope you like it :)

Martin Scorsese is brillant. He made a masterpiece of a movie. Daniel day Lewis was phenominal. The music, the scenery. Just brillant.
Happy 30th anniversary to The Age of Innocence!
Released 10/01/1993!
And the 104th of the novel...
Such a wonderful film. You can feel the influences of Barry Lyndon and The Leopard.
Idiot. Don’t even mention Barry Lyndon in the presence of this turd.
🙄
Amen to that !
Father Damien Karras Barry Lyndon is my 5th favorite film, but you don’t need to be mean if someone says another film has taken influence from it. In fact it’s Elliot’s favorite film, so he’s in no way disrespecting. There’s no need to get nasty
I’d also add The Magnificent Ambersons
Oh my so much pain.. I kept being reminded that I'm basically "Ellen", the different one
In some countries, there are societies that still live this way. In my case, my own choices would have lasting consequences on my family, status, image (everything implied in the movie..), I can't fully be selfish and do what I believe is best for me and not think about the results
I had to make the hardest decision and let the love of my life go, so he could find love and happiness without the conditions my society was imposing (since he came from a different culture)
As a result, my family kept its 'honor' and my sisters have their futures and acceptance in society , but I'm forever heartbroken, mourning a life that could have been.. 💔
For me Winona Ryder was the closest we had to Audrey Hepburn
Totally agree
Not in real life.
Unfortunately she was nothing like Audrey Hepburn in real life!! 😮
She certainly is underrated as an actress.
My life is me watching this trailer on repeat
My favorite film too💐💝 happy Valentine’s Day
Haha! You’re amazing ☺️
Love this movie ...its one of my favorite....
I've watched this movie so many times. I never get tired
It's really ironic that in both this and The Crucible, Day-Lewis plays a character paired up with Ryder's character by marriage and adultery respectively but he doesn't love her in either case.
My favourite film of all time
loved this movie
Why do half the people hate Michelle Pfieffer? She's a great actress.! Stunning yet with feeling...I don't think Scorsese would cast anyone not right! Her character isn't likeable.... though....she's good at playing that angle despite seeming nice in real life too (I read she has lots of animals/pet lover)
Amazing book, amazing film
I can't believe this is the same guy who drank your milkshake.
And a guy who cuts meat
Breathtakingly gorgeous, devastating film. It is heart wrenching to watch and indeed Scorsese’s most violent film. Daniel Day Lewis and Michelle Pfeiffer give flawless performances. It will leave you kind of numb and shell chocked for hours or even days 😢
I really enjoyed watching this movie by Martin Scorsese he did a beautiful job lovely music beautiful costumes on all the actresses and great cinematography
Throughout my younger years "The Age of Innocence" was my most beloved of bookes. Not a single word out of place.
This is a great epic movie with a amazing cast
I have a notion to second that emotion !!
The score is one of my all timers....
Somewhere In Time is my favorite.
Perhaps Criterion could consider posting their own branded trailers with a preview of the disc case artwork, booklet and special features, rather than simply rehashing a 25 year old studio trailer?
I am still here
masterpiece
Love the music in this film
Fun Fact: Daniel Day-Lewis & Michelle Pfeiffer. Both were born: April 29th.
Me on the 28th, 28 is better
what a coincidence!
@@Ryan-fc6di I was born April 28th too
I’m about to watch this movie for the first time
Devastating ending.
And with that my ladies, that’s why you never introduce your ‘lady’ pals to your man.
Sevencoins7 indeed
Literally the one take away I got from the book 🤣🤣🤣🤣
What's the name of the music at the beginning of the trailer?
One of Marty's best.
❤️ I can so Relate to this movie 😭
The casting is all wrong. May was light haired and athletic, Ellen was dark and mysterious.
Cheerleader vs. Goth!
That's irrelevant. Pfeiffer embodies perfectly the kind of woman who, despite being evidently a bit older, emanates a mysterious beauty. Winona is the "primitive and pure" with her subtle features, radiant because she's young and innocent.
Amazing movie
I agree 100 per cent ! Top notch in EVERY dept: script, cast, direction, music, art direction, etc etc etc !!
fantastic *
Love is a red dress. ❤️
Unbelievable movie. Any other director would have been celebrated but Scorsese has achieved so many masterpieces that this simply got buried.
This trailer reduces a great movie to schmaltz with that unbearable early 90s voiceover.
"She never asked me."
For some reason I laughed when Newland said that after Ted's "revelation" to him.
But she did ask him, he denied it though.
Great movie
Daniel Day Lewis and Winona Ryder were brilliant in this mlvie

Such a great movie in every other way than giving 'proper-respectful' credit where credit is due. Louisa van der Luyden was played by one of the greatest top rated top billed actresses ever, on screen and stage, Alexis Smith. Yet, I was appalled to find her name lost somewhere down in the middle of the third column of feature actors. (!?) The proper accrediting given to someone of Ms Smith's stature should of been at the end of crediting all else read And or Also starring Alexis Smith. Or even Featuring. I cant believe Scorsese would roll that way.
But she was in a really minor role here....
Wait, this trailer just showed us the whole bloody movie!
Ikrrr
Doesn't matter.... its still gr8 to watch
It’s a great summary for us who have seen the film.
@@kapilmsingbal Watch the movie again then. People who look for trailers are those who want a taste of the film, but don't want it spoilt.

I love this movie.Daniel Day Lewis is one talented ,charismatic, sexy and handsome actor,Archibald Newlland is one his best performances ever. The only thing that hurt this movie was the presence of M.Pfeiffer and her usual wooden acting.
Michelle Pfeiffer is most lovely in this film...
2 minutes and 24 seconds dripping with yearning.
But i just saw the whole movie in this trailer

Which ep. was it?
It's about true love & real life
The Details......
Owning this would be most good, people. Most good.
Was a really good film it was about a Philanderer and a Shrew who seduces men and an lnnocent who is always being lied to, wonderful scenery and music😊
The only "philanderer" in that film was Julius Beaufort If being very infatuated with someone, & kissing her passionately a couple of times in a long film is philandering, I don't know the real definition. & who was the shrew? We don't plan who we love
Gorgeous film. My favourite director. Handsome actors.
Watched this a few days ago on TV I loved it but the ending was kinda sad.
Real life is often sad.
Not everything has
a happy ending like
a children's film or
an MGM musical.
Amazing.

How have I never heard of this until today? Massive Scorsese fan. Apparently not massive enough. Haha

What I can't figure out after reading the book is how Archer could just go on with his life for 30 years and be ok with it when he detested it so bitterly?
He had no choice. May was with chuldt
@@maampimim I get that! But how did he go from major crisis to basically being ok for 30 years, how could it just go away like that? I find that part a little unrealistic.
@@AleksandraLapaeva I have gone like without being able to do or without doing anything about it....
😞🙄😏
Almost everybody does exactly that. Don’t we all “settle” in various ways. Archer had his books, music, travel, did not have to worry about money. May was probably not a shrew. They had children to raise, children that ended up quite likable. And thirty years go by in a flash.

Didn't like the plot, but the visual and acting are stunning.
Edith Wharton
wrote the book
after she had
survived WW 1
in Europe.
The film is set at the
time of her youth;
reflecting the society
that she lived within
.
By 1900 that type of
society was beginng
to be replaced
After WW1 European
and American culture
and society would
never return to such
a stable (albeit, some
would say "stagnant")
state of tight-knit
communities.
All of Old Europe was
swept into the dustbin
of history by WW1

My first Martin scorcese's movie. Not bad at all but some part were a bit too long though
Is there any good riding in this film?🤔😎
Those two are morally corrupt. His a coward for still marrying May while fantasizing about another women and then cheating behind her back after marriage.
He should have maintained his distance from the beginning. They make me so angry. May really deserved better. His a jerk!!!
There would not have been a movie then! 😉
@@mrk2K10 lol true.. If only everything could be perfect...
Lilly rose Kinda agree? Archer should have realized earlier that May would make him miserable since their personalities did not match. Especially since May gave him a choice partway through to break the engagement. As for May... I confess I don’t really like her character either. She’s shallow and wanted to force Archer into her mold of an ideal society man which made him absolutely miserable. Perhaps Ellen is the most “blameless” in a sense. She’s following her instincts only and she at least had the foresight to go away from Archer eventually. Even if May did not frighten her away with the pregnancy, she was only willing to consummate the affair once then flee so as to give her cousin a proper marriage.
You just described Prince Charles and Camilla 🤔
My same exact thoughts
"As much as a man can be." Did Charles watch this movie?
They didn't get horizontal. The End.
🤣😅
She turned round at the end typical.Light house
I can't relate myself to this love stories movies, because I'm not that 6+ height handsome hunk hero, 6+ figure salary and those women in the movies, i mean can women relate themselve to those make up beauties? In my real life i barely talk to gals, because u see that, they got this attitude: nobody can impress me, I'm queen bla bla, only rich guys in their head, and all of this because of this kind of drama pouring lies in their head
Why? So if a woman gives herself to you and give you children, then what are you going to give your children? Do you have a house for her and the children to live in, or do you expect her to do those things? So tell me, why do you think you deserve to have a woman in your life if you barely have enough to support both of you?
@@a.m.308 the first thing how do you assume that I don't have house ? Of course I have, have you even read what i said, then don't bark
And nobody gives me child yet lmao, what a joke, i consider this when she gives me one before that she must need to end the lie pouring in her head, understand the reality, not the comics
@@Resident579 Ok so why do you think you deserve a woman if you’re not 6 figure? Seriously why should she give you her time? You sound like you don’t want to take care of her or support her and you expect any woman to want to be with you? Are you kidding me? I’m sure you like women with small waist, big watermelons, and all that and yet here you are judging women for wanting a handsome man.
Do you think her lover will send her yellow roses?
An almost perfect film, marred by the total miscast of Michelle Pfeiffer as Ellen Olenska. Could have been five stars, but that alone knocks it down to four or maybe four and a half
Archer deserves the misery, he wants someone else and marry another. He could have ended the engagement yet he hastens the wedding only to bail after 😆 glad he got tied with the pregnancy. And now 30 years later blamed his dead wife for not realizing his fantasy. Ellen is a very wise woman, glad she did not end up with another coward.
My name is Maya (that should have been my mother's name). My mom raised me to be a proper lady, just like May. However, my urges and fantasies are much more like Countess Olenska's.
This movie was not bad but it was no "Gangs of New York"...
Me: I wish I lived in the Victorian era. It looks like such a lovely place. Woke activist: You mean you wish you were a rich, white, privileged male during the Victorian era. Me: What’s wrong with that?

'Me: I wish I lived in the Victorian era. It looks like such a lovely place. Woke activist: You mean you wish you were a rich, white, privileged male during the Victorian era. Me: What’s wrong with that?'
Woke activists living in western society today are the most privileged people in all of history. They are just too arrogant to realize it.
Great film overlooked in Scorsese's Oeuvre bcs it seems so out of character

good thing I watched the trailer. dodged a bullet of a story I don’t care about lol
I just saw this movie only for Michele Pfeiffer but i didn't like it. Michelle carried the whole movie wbk
The trailer is teetering on pretentiousness
I bought the film for $5 on Google Play and it's a decent film. I would have been upset if I had paid $1 more though... Some movies aren't worth what you pay for so this was acceptable.

It's a crashing bore from start to finish. Scorsese has no feel or understanding for the period and only he could take two talented actors like Day Lewis and Pfeiffer and turn them into a pair of stiffs.
One of the most boring films I've ever seen..i don't care if its a Scorsese film
It was boring
Terrible film, the trailer sums up the cringe.
Father Damien Karras Ah. Clearly someone has absolutely no taste.
@@epicnoob1178 it's just different taste than yours. I tried to like this film. I adore the director and every actor that is part of this movie. Still it did not work for me. I should be crying like a baby on the last scene, but it was just a scene to me. Great concept of a story, seen at least once in everyone's life. But bad execution (ffs, the first half an hour of the movie and many parts of it are filled with narration! wtf Scorseze? If I wanted to buy the audio book I would. I came for a movie!)
@@helekin2000 What i didn't liked is that the main character seemed to love Michel Pfeiffer character without any reason, they mentioned something about their past in certain scene, but besides that there wasn't nothing relevant, i guess some "background" in their imposible affair would give not only the last scene but the entire movie some additional punch.
@@miguelangelmiranda8460 you are absolutely right. You won't find that reason either if you read the novel. In my opinion their love is purely circumstantial. Yes, the way in which their paths cross is beautifully conveyed. Their desire for a change in the stagnant rules of society coupled with the thrill of defying it is what constitutes their attraction, but it's a "doomed if you do doomed if you don't" situation. I suspect Wharton wasn't up to mark to describe the key element that surely justified the real story behind it (if there was one), namely _chemistry_ .
Kamy Busu I was thinking a little about this. Personally, the romance actually was not the main plot of the novel or the film per se. The romance served more as a vehicle for the conflict of Archer vs his society’s asphyxiating conformity. How or why he came to love Ellen was justified by narration but I can forgive the author for not going into more detail because the bulk of the novel was on his conflict with society and whether he had the resolve to pursue his romance or succumb to society’s expectations.
