      Honestly I think movies are better than books more often than readers like to admit. Movies that fans of the books hate because of all the changes can be really well liked amongst people who haven't read the books (at least at the time when they first watch the film) and are therefore sort of more objective about the film.
      There are so many hugely popular films where people are often not even aware that the book exists because the book wasn't that successful. Legally Blonde is an example. I read the book after seeing the movie, it's okay, but there's a reason it's the film everyone has heard of.

      How do you know that's all they read? I've read quite a few science fiction (I HATE the term "sci-fi") novels and series many times. C.J. Cherryh's Alliance-Union novels, especially Cyteen and Regenesis, are so wonderfully complex that it takes multiple readings to even begin to get a good handle on the universe and characters she created.
      I read lots of other things as well, of course, in multiple genres.

    @AyceMcGee Před 3 lety +18

    "How do you no have the time to read / re-read as often as I do? I have a full-time job and still read ___ amount of books a week" - People say this as though everyone's 168 hours in the same. I can't read on the bus. It gives me massive motion sickness and, due to all the noise, being autistic, and having sensory issues, I can't properly focus on an audiobook on the bus. That's over an hour right there of reading time I don't have, two hours if you count the ride home. Then you have to add in mental health issues, disabilities, chores, if someone has kids or pets or family to care for, their mental and physical health, stress levels of work... just because YOU have the time for it doesn't mean everyone does! AND some of us do other things in our spare time besides reading books! Some nights I want to read a whole book. Other nights I want to rewatch Daria for the 13th time since quarantine started.
    "How do you not remember that part of the book? Did you even read it?" Umm... I have actual brain damage and miss out on a lot of minor details. I can still be a fan of the book without being able to recall every little bitty thing that happened!
    People that get angry over you mispronouncing a name that doesn't exist in any place but that book. How am I supposed to know? It's not like the pronunciation is always written out.
    There's this subset of readers who think booktube recommendations are all just paid promos instead of actual recommendations. I know sometimes people are gifted books from publishers, so I guess some might be paid to give them a nice review? I don't know how it all works. But most are just people sharing books they love.
    "Library books don't help the author" They actually do! Authors receive royalties when their books are bought and checked out. Plus, it's super classist to assume everyone can afford to buy books. Do these same people complain about buying books used? Because that doesn't actually help the author at all.
    "You're not a real fan if ____" You can be a fan of something without feeling the same passion and intensity that other fans do.
    When a book has an open ending and people, usually in fanfic spaces, are like "that's not what happens after the book ends" HOW DO YOU KNOW? It's not written anywhere. It's open to our interpretations. If I think so and so become friends and drink tea by a swamp then it's possible that they did. There's no right or wrong answer.
    The "comics/manga aren't worth reading" people have clearly never read Bitter Root, The Wicked + The Divine, LaGuardia, Faithless, Lonely Receiver, Sandman, Hack/Slash, Monstress, My Lesbian Experience With Loneliness, Bingo Love, Saga, Alan Moore's Swamp Thing, Batgirl Reborn, ... I could go on for hours.

Plus I tend to read the most laying in bed under darkness and having a Kindle with dark mode is perfection for me. Do I miss the touch and feel of a book? Sometimes, but every time I've bought one to read, I struggled with being comfy with it. That comes from ignorance, laziness, and lack if thinking it through on their part. If he, or anyone for that matter, applied that logic to the horror and action genre of movies the "only" conclusion would be to not trust a huge group of people in a society. There can be so much nuance found in horror and tragedy. Movies and books of these genres vary in the amount they use in storytelling, as does enjoyment for the content from person to person as well as the why.
      It can hurt when someone makes a remark like that. Especially when they might be someone you consider close, or of something you like. Even when it is hard the best thing to do is to remember that it isn't your fault that they are making ignorant statements from ignorant thinking. You read through the tragedy, took something from it, and found the nuggets of gems.

      That’s a good question! I think it’s true that we really can’t get what it’s like to live a totally different life from the one we have, but I also think if someone outlines elements of the plot, writing, etc that didn’t work for them and still get told they don’t get it, that’s not quite the same. I’d never really feel comfortable rating a memoir a low rating simply because I didn’t relate, for example. I think the problem is that there are some individuals outside the culture/race who only want books that relate to them, and when white people are the majority of the population in the countries that dominate publishing, then I do think there are problems that arise from that. Idk if I answered this very clearly-I guess I’m saying it depends on the situation!

    • @AyceMcGee
      @AyceMcGee Před 3 lety +6

      This is a good question! When I read The Last Black Unicorn, it received a lot of negative reviews because people "couldn't handle how she writes" Tiffany Haddish wrote in AAVE, which is a valid English dialect with its own grammatical rules. So-called "real readers" refused to read past the first chapter because it's not the form of English they're accustomed to. I've brought up the point on several occasions that American, European, Australian, and old English are all viewed as valid forms of English. They have their own slang, rules, pronunciations, etc, etc.... A lot of people are able to pick up books written by various forms of English speaking authors with no problems. What makes AAVE any different? It's Black. That's it. Its roots are Black. It's mostly spoken by Black Americans. AAVE has existed for over 400 years. Its history is fascinating and tragic and important. Some people genuinely don't get it. Instead of accepting that, they felt the need to trash it and give it low ratings. The book has some problematic elements to do, but it's still an example of what a great Black memoir can be and should be. Not every book needs to be written to appease white academia.

    I hate the "you're not a real fan because blah blah blah" statement. I was taking quizzes on buzzfeed and found one titled "check off these dystopian books you have read to see if you're a real fan" or something like that. I am a huge dystopian fan btw. But since I only checked off about 7 series out of 24, it said I was not a real fan which really angered me. The dystopian book genre is my all time fav, so to have someone or something tell you you're not a real fan purely based off how many book or series in that genre you're read can be really annoying. You can still be a fan of something even if you've only read or seen one thing in that particular group. Another one is "answer these questions correctly to see if you're a true fan." You can still be a true fan of some thing regardless of how many questions you get right or how much you know! You can still genuinly love it for what it is! There are way more ways that statement can be used and it just really bothers me.

    I hate when people on Goodreads "DNF" a book then give it a bad rating. I read a review of a book this morning and the reader gave it one star, then states in the review that they stopped reading 90 pages into the book. The book being rated was over 800 pages. It's so unfair to the author.

    • @katalinilles5497
      @katalinilles5497 Před 3 lety +1

      But what is the parts you have read before DNFing were actually so bad, that nothing could make the book better? There are cases when you just don't click with a book but wouldn't think it's bad, but I'm other cases, you stop reading because it has serious issues.
      Recently I gave 1 star to a book I DNFed at 25% because it was super misogynistic. Even if I would have continued, that wouldn't make this criticism invalid.

      @verat3155 Před 3 lety +1

      Well, I do it. I think it is unfair to readers when, for example, a badly written book has a 4-star rating or higher. And if I feel that the book is a pile of garbage by the 90th page, why should I waste my time?

    • @chloefranklin5324
      @chloefranklin5324 Před 3 lety +1

      As a writer myself, I actually fully disagree with this. If I DNF a book, it's usually for a good reason which I want to talk about in my review space. I always preface those reviews saying that I DNFed it and what page I did so at, so that anyone reading my review (which isn't many tbh) are fully informed. Goodreads is a space for readers, not authors, and it is my personal review space where I can express my thoughts. It's not the same as going to an author's personal social media, for example, and bitching about their book. I would never do that because that is extremely hurtful and disrespectful. But Goodreads is, again, a space where readers can say whatever they want, for better or for worse. I don't agree with some of the behaviour I see on there, like rating books before they're released, but I don't see anything wrong with rating and reviewing a book you DNFed because there would be a legitimate reason for doing so.

    Someone told me “you’re not a real reader…” bc I read to escape, I don’t overthink it or analyze it and because I like young adult fantasy. It hurt my little reading heart.

    Yep, gatekeeping helps no one. Lots of people like things I dislike, or vice versa, and telling someone their subjective opinion about something harmless is wrong just needlessly divides people who should be celebrating both their commonalities and differences.

    I grew up being told to read and that watching TV and playing video games is a waste of time. Long story short, videogames and books are my favorite form of entertainment.

    i do not reread books, but still a fan....i speed read, i skim read too but i still enjoy the book i love...and still a fan..... i am also being judge from what books i read as mostly just novel and sometimes manga too... at least i'm enjoying it rather than saying that you're a bookworm or book lover but never talks about something you've read... also i read just to improve the language too. English is not our primary language but i still enjoy them....

    My mom had a book club and she said it was an excuse to drink. I read the books and was ready to go and only one or two other people read the book. I stopped going

    My brother has declared that he HATES his children reading, because "then they just ignore everything else and only pay attention to the book" (for the record, they have been known to do this with other things, like games). He has also decreed that we are not allowed to gift the kids any books that are fictional (he has started he'd rather we didn't give them any books at all), because at least their learning something (like we can't find nonfiction that is also entertaining? And I have learned tons of things from fiction as well). Three out of four of his kids do enjoy reading, so this is a topic he brings up a lot, like it hasn't sunk in for him that he's the black sheep of the immediate family since the rest of us do enjoy reading. It is the weirdest thing ever to me.

    I have a book club, but it is more of a wine club. Lol. We have a really laid back book club and there's only 4 of us. We do actually read and talk about the book, but we don't have specific questions that we discuss.

    I hate book snobbery (same with music). I rarely say a book is bad. I would rather say that it isn't for me. Also, whilst you get more out of a book the more you read it if it requires multiple reads to "get it", is it really any good?

    A book is a book. Two covers with pages in between = books... exception to rule: magazine, unless in book format :) However! Two or three magazines placed between a cover fold is considered a "book" in the industry.
