LOVED my Game Boy Camera and Printer back in the day. I can't put words to how COOL this thing was back in '98. And yeah, it's easy to miss, but the official printer paper is actually a sticker sheet!
You didn't even touch on the fact that the paper is sticky-backed.
Also, thermal paper degrades over time, even when still sealed. That's why the quality was so poor. Get some modern thermal paper, cut it to size, and try that. You'll likely be pleasantly surprised at the increase in print quality.

I recall Neil Young used the Game Boy camera for the cover of his album Silver and Gold. The way that printer prints, maybe he used the paper for the image, too.
I have to say - I think you guys' review of this and the Game Boy Camera were two of my favorite reviews this year. You guys clearly had a lot of fun with those accessories and kinda make me want them too! Thanks a lot for sharing this!

***** The reason why the printout is faded is because the paper itself is so old, the thermal chemicals in the paper have expired.
If you go on Amazon, they have 1.5" rolls of thermal calculator paper that work PERFECTLY with the Game Boy Printer.

Man when this came out I thought it was the coolest thing ever! I bought a brand new game boy pocket just for the camera then got the printer later. I think it could have been a bigger success if they pushed it more, adding support to more games, maybe releasing an upgraded version of the camera as well. There actually was an unreleased upgraded version planned for the game boy advance but obviously it never materialized. Did he mention that the paper is actually sticker paper as well so you can use them as stickers? It was also available in different colors too. BTW you can use any kind of thermal paper for this, just get some receipt or fax paper and cut it into strips the same width as the official paper and feed it through.
I still love that you named your dog Stella, and I love the reason why even more so.
They should make a printer attachment for the 3DS. With 3D paper. And lasers, because its the future.

Mark. You can use receipt paper in this printer but you'll have to trim the paper to fit the printer but it might work loads better.

Hey Mark, here's a pratical tips for wifi printer, just put a static IP for the printer and remember it when you get trouble so you can try to ping the printer from the cmd. It's a problem when it's a dynamic ip because windows don't know it has change.

I remember reading once the camera actually does store the color information too. And that there is a way to make the pictures you take with it color on pc I think.
Ok Mark I have one of these now and like yours the paper that comes with it does not print but I tried a receipt that was cut to size and what a difference. I will be buying some thermal receipt paper and cutting it to the correct size. And you have the same cable that I have. It came with the printer and a roll of paper.

Newer paper would help, it looks to be a similar size to the PDQs I use at work. Also cleaning the ceramic heat strip will help.

This thing was great when I was a kid. The Game Boy Camera had a ton of built-in pictures you could unlock, and if you didn't have them they printed as just big question marks.
I stuck them all over my brother's things, it drove him insane.

eBay and Amazon has them and also yard sales and goodwills.
I own the printer along with the gameboycamera but finding official papper for it becomes rarer each day ,especialy finding new ones in boxes, also sad is that those pappers has a limited lifespan and the quality leaves alot to desire,but the concept is cool and i got gold memory's with the gameboycamera.

Wasn't just for Game Boy, they made it as a hybrid Game Boy/Game Boy Color, that's why the other end has 2 separate connections to plug into the system (as well as Game Boy Pocket).
The paper also has a peel off back to make it a sticker too!

My WiFi printer works brilliantly, Brother HL-5370DW. Two thumbs up.
We got a Canon WiFi printer/scanner that works perfectly too.

What would be cool is if someone could get a hold of a GameStop Receipt Printer (the ones they use today), and mod it to work with the Game Boy Camera or modern cameras. Imagine the clarity! (but if you expose them to heat, they fade. they don't use actual ink, either...)

Maybe the poor print is due to the quality of the actual photo. Try taking a decent exposure with good lighting and the best black levels and highlights you can manage with this thing. If the print is too faded, try upping the contrast until you get a darker image. As a photographer I have a personal time of thumb. When in doubt over the proper exposure, I always go darker as to not lose any detail.

Hmm I have a question does a cable come with the printer so you can just plug it into your gameboy or is the cable sold separately your also using old printer paper get the stuff people sell and it comes out better on newer paper.

I got my printer and camera together on eBay for really cheap. Love them, but my printer prints faded pictures as well, and the camera came with a bunch of pictures of teens smoking on it, as well as a random picture of a baby.
They're fun peripherals to have, but I've used each one for a legitimate purpose only once. I used the printer to print the last card that I spent hours trying to get in Pokemon Trading Card Game for the GBC, and actually used the camera to take my official Game Club photo in high school.
Does the application offer cubic b-spline interpolation to apply to images? I know Photoshop does.

If it is a thermal printer like a receipt printer, the roller inside that comes in contact with that thermal paper may need to be cleaned to get more contrast in the image. They get nasty and gummy making it work poorly.
