I’m Atheist when someone says Merry Christmas, I don’t say anything negative. Someone is being nice to you. I just say Merry Christmas to you. There’s no reason to be a dickhead or offended by someone being nice to you.
Exactly if someone wee to say to be “salam alehkum” (I don’t know how to spell it) or ‘peace be upon you’, I’d respect and be thankful for the intention behind it, because they genuinely mean what they are saying and they are wishing me well, so I’d respect that and be nice back. I’m not Muslim, or Christian, I’m atheist, but that doesn’t mean I have to be a dick
This was the part that undercut it all and made him just look like an idiot. Naming *periods of time* after Christ, BECAUSE you wanna distinguish yourself from jews, is stupid as fuck. Calling it B.C.E. is the option where you credit the science and not the dumbass motivations/connotations
It's ironic since he questioned the "motivation" of Ben Shapiro to know the connection between gender ideology and science in their interview. What a hypocrite.
Totally agree, I am an quite a extreme atheist yet my vocabulary is littered with references to religion, "my god", "for god's sake", "in the name of Christ", "good lord", "bless my soul", "may we meet in heaven". It's kinda funny actually.
@@Arun_BaligaMe as well but I don’t think using phrases like that are cultural and just have less meaning to us Atheists than Christians. The words aren’t the problem is the meaning behind them, so if it means nothing to us why care and why not use it ya know?

Man I love this guy, I'm a Christian and this man has my full respect, especially on the note when he said "I'm not gonna tell people they're idiots for believing in God". To remove the religious history from science would be disparaging many of the greatest scientists and mathematicians. I'm in agreement with Neil as an "atheist". People of cloth were some of the greatest pioneers in science, maths, physics/engineering, chemistry, anatomy & physiology, genetics, and medicine. I feel where "things went wrong" was that in many places, the Church as an institution (regardless of denomination or sect), quelled curiosity of the wonders of the world. The pioneers saw God as the watch maker and wanted to understand how it works, instead of being content with just having the watch which is where many people are at today.
@@jackman5840 nah, I just heard the explanation of why the s is added for maths and it made sense to me. Like, we have different sciences such as chemistry and biology, we have different maths as well like algebra, geometry, etc.
That was my father ... Why papa? And then he would give you a history or a science lesson. Which is why I ended up studying cosmology and planetary sciences. He had grown up with 16 kids and being the eldest he knew how to raise kids (ethnic Shaphardi Jews, but Catholics by faith). He had been educated by the Jesuits. My mother who was a psychiatrist and a child psychologist was an orphan had no understanding of how to raise kids even though she had a licentiate in child psychology. Fathers make such a great difference in how children grow up to be. He had me doing studying college level mathematics and the Euclidean proofs at the age of 10 and it was so entertaining. It is one thing to get a child to study but it is another to make the child to know it is the most enjoyable thing to do. Got a pencil now give me a puzzle to figure out myself.
@@deusimperator That's an intelligent father right there. To condition you when you are young in a good way to enjoy these things and ponder. Though some children are simply not that good at math and science, so a new approach to them to other topics might be good.
This is the first CZcams video I have ever seen where Christians and atheists are both saying civil, thoughtful things. For that reason alone I love Tyson even more. Well done, my friend.
As a religious man I have major respect for scientists who, while they may see the world in a seperate light, still respect the culture of our beliefs. Its crazy how einstien and hawking are both lifted as heros of atheism, yet they both left Gods place in the science open to interpretation. Great scientists dont come to any certain conclusions, rather they continue to ask; what if?
@rodomolina7995 their personally held convictions were never involved in their science and even hawking admitted while he saw no evidence and thus no reason to make the assertion of a God, the possibility itself could never be ruled out either, he just didn't value it. So your point is also a mute one that lacks the context. ANY "scientist" who takes the concept of science with a reverence for the process.. cannot honestly say, "it's not possible" the most they can honestly say.. is we don't have any concrete evidence, enough to make the claim validated. Thats not the same thing as making the claim that God doesn't exist. Anyone who does make that claim, using science as their basis... fuckingndoesnt understand science.

He could still call himself an atheist, he's just a reasonable one. There are unreasonable people on both sides, but the same way people of faith don't let go of their beliefs because of the mistakes of some of their colleagues I don't see why an atheist should stop calling themselves atheist just because of the mistakes of others that identify as such
It is not just about what other atheist do. Its also what Neil stands for. Atheists deny the existence of God and goes to great lengths to disprove and discredit. Neil DeGrasse Tyson seeks proof of God's existence and welcomes any information. He respects and credits religious contribution to science and its culture. That's what differentiates him from atheists. As he said, it kinda applies to him, but what atheists do also makes them a religion and that's where the border is.
@@jamestakac8951 Per wikipedia: "Atheism, in the broadest sense, is an absence of belief in the existence of deities. Less broadly, atheism is a rejection of the belief that any deities exist." That's why he said, it 'kinda applies' to him, however he does not reject beliefs on deities.
@@chriscross1737 "Tyson seeks proof of God's existence.." No he doesn't. He doesn't actively seek it's existence, he only concedes that he can't say definitively "there is no god out there somewhere in the unknown" because it's an unanswerable question. He also can't say the same for Zeus, Loki, Odin, Shiva, The Lochness Monster, Santa Claus, Unicorns, The Flying Spaghetti Monster, etc etc. That's just being intellectually honest. Any respectful scientist is able to say "I don't know" without any bruising of the ego. You literally can't say no about something that might exist in another large body of unknowns.
Awesomely accurate, at least. It has other issues that could be improved in principle. For instance, if there were 360 days in the year, we could have exactly 30 days in each month. We have 5 more days than that in non-leap years... so why are there *7* months with 1 extra day and then one runt of a month with 2 days removed? I'm sure that's for historical reasons of how the Roman calendar worked, but now we can see it's a little more complicated than necessary. If I were to design it from scratch, I'd rather just have 7 months of 30 days and 5 of 31 days, and make one of the 30-day months have an extra day in a leap year, resulting in 6 of 30 days and 6 of 31 days.
Daniel Dawson i think you are over simplifying the complexity of making changes to the calendar. Do you think with your postulation that there would be no disturbance in the timing of the equinoxes? I would imagine over time summer would be in December in the northern hemisphere with your rather aesthetic calendar idea.
@@barrontrump3943 Perhaps you're not understanding what I was getting at. I'm not talking about changing the number of days in the year, just redistributing the lengths of the months. And yes, all of the leap year rules of the Gregorian calendar, too. How would that shift the seasons like you claim?
Daniel Dawson if you redistribute the days in the months even considering the leap years you will be shifting around seasons over time because seasons do not fluctuate with an even set amount of days. The seasons would be thrown off eventually with your idea.
@@barrontrump3943 That makes no sense at all. Every year in my idea has the *same number of days* as in the Gregorian calendar. The days of months on which things fall might be different, but there would be no more or less drift over many years.
He's factual...until he's not. He talks out of his speciality a lot, especially on social media and that has got him in trouble after being fact checked. If he stuck with astrophysics and whatever other scientific fields he specializes in he would have a much higher degree of credibility
the guy is a douche bag and, and once again this Neil deGrasse douche bag is wrong... god speed origin doesn't come from the space programs to wish a good travel in space, that's ridicoulous. The word originates from Middle English (circa 1200-1300) meaning “may God cause you to succeed”. “God speed” is found also in the King James Version of the Bible which was translated from 1600 and only in one passage.
Oh please, he is taking the safest position ever. People like him want to be liked by as many people as possible -- including Christians. This is why he and others (like Kaku) always try to play the middle.
The funny thing about "Christians" is half of them aren't even Christian. If they were, they'd probably be in jail where they deserve to rot for their horrific and deluded beliefs. :)

And he’s always looking for clarity for himself and others who’s listening (the audience can’t pretend to understand everything everyone is saying). Some of them can’t “dumb it down for the average person to understand. I get he talks over people but it’s because he doesn’t want his listeners to get false understanding. You think he learned what he knows by NOT listening to others? I just think he’s knows a lot about a lot and that’s fine when you put the work in over 30 plus years. He listens to Dawkins, Cox, Green (sometimes) and Lawrence who he love to chat with. I think he just love to share his knowledge with the world every chance he gets.
I agree with Tyson. When I was a young adult I would identify as an Atheist. As I got older and matured, I grew to kind of dislike the almost arrogant way Dawkins, Hitchens, Harris etc would berate religious people. I think there's more important things to worry about than engaging in arguments with people whose minds I won't ever change no matter how much sense my arguments make. I also realised that it's incredibly arrogant to be an Atheist or antitheist or whatever and boldly assert that there is no God. Nobody can know that with absolute certainty, it's a rather ludicrous thing to say when you really think about it. "There is no God." Oh, so you've looked everywhere have you? Lol. I dislike labels at all now, because I think they're kind of arbitrary, dumb, unhelpful and meaningless, at their worst they're dangerous and harmful. But if anything I think I'm an agnostic. I think that's the most logical thing to go by. For me personally, anyway. I don't much care whether people are religious or not, or which religion if any they choose. So long as they're good people and don't impinge on my freedoms or rights. The golden rule kids, treat others how you would have them treat you. Jim Jefferies famously said, the bible should only have one line. "Try not to be a C*nt."
When Dawkins was asked how much he lacked belief in god(s) he said he had his own scale of 1-7 1 being 100% sure god is real 7 being 100% sure he's not and he called himself a 6. One issue people seem to have is not understanding there is more than one way to lack belief in god(s). For example "I don't believe in god" and "I know god is not real" are two statements which state you lack belief in god(s) but only one of them is making the claim that they *know* god is not real. Most atheists including the ones you listed are what are called agnostic atheists in that they admit they can't know for a fact if god(s) are not real or not which is the agnostic part and due to the lack of evidence of any god they also hold no active belief in any god(s) which makes them atheistic. Tbh I don't understand how being a "pure" agnostic would even work because being agnostic isn't a claim about god(s) but knowledge and what it's possible to know. If someone asks if you believe in god(s) and you just say you're agnostic you haven't actually told them if you hold any active belief in that god(s) you just said you can't know for sure which is a separate question. It's like asking someone if they think alien life exists and instead of yes or no it's "It's impossible to be sure" but being impossible to know for sure doesn't stop the human mind from landing on one side or the other while it waits for more information. The thing about human beliefs is they're binary you either believe something or you don't admitting you can't know an answer for sure doesn't change that, you can switch the belief from on to off as often as the mind allows but I've never heard an explanation as to how someone would both believe and not believe something at the same time which would be the only way I can think of to be a "pure" agnostic otherwise you would be an agnostic believer or an agnostic unbeliever
Neither Dawkins nor Harris have ever said "there is no god". Hitchens I'm unsure of since I'm not as familiar with him, but I doubt he's ever claimed with certainty that there is no god. Because to do that would be to adopt the burden of proof, and none of them are dumb enough to do that...
He didn't give props to christians, though. He acknowledged the hard work put in by monks who astutely tweaked the Julian calendar, and decided that the BC/AD terminology was earned. @@somewhataddicted7685 Well, it sometimes irritates me that he can come across as so full of himself and that comes across as rude sometimes and it occasionally makes him say daft things, like he doesn't use a phone case, he just never drops his phone, like nobody else had thought of that. Leading theories in Physics hypothesize that there exists a world before the big bang that still eludes us. Such theories include the idea of a multiverse in which our big bang is similar to plentiful of singularities that we observe within our universe (like the ones at the centers of galaxies and that occur from collapsed stars). Like our big bang and the collapsed stars we do not have an observable insight on what occurs at the other end - YET we know they still exist as they have an effect in our universe, mainly warping of Space-time through gravitational and electromagnetic forces as postulated by Einstein. He quote says it perfectly in my opinion; “The motivation is whatever it is, but the science is good.” You might have a list of reasons you do not like Neil, but the science is good; and it does everyone good to listen to it. I would bet that you have cut people off before when talking about concepts that you enjoy, that doesn’t make you an asshole, just annoying for a moment or two. If you are interested in Joe Rogan and his talks, I would recommend Neil and his Startalk podcast. Even if you have your issues with the man, there are a lot of great conversations he has.
@Dion Jordan It is not hateful, just oversimplified to generate a quick laugh. Yes, it overlooks the main aspects of the conversation and misrepresents the point of the conversation, but most people don't care and move on with their life. :)
I am a theist. I have so much respect for Neil, in part because of this video. I understand he does not agree with my conclusions, but the fact he doesn’t feel a desire to belittle my intelligence goes a long way. When there is respect it allows for dialogue and understanding. What a guy.
I think it’s more about people feeling like they can’t trust govt, and their sense of belonging to a marginalized group than anything else. If the govt said the earth is flat, a bunch of flat earthers I bet would become round earthers.
@Austin Mark The same goes both ways mate. Not proud of this but I spend waaaay to much time talking with people on the internet about this specific topic and when I begin tearing evolution down, in the absence of any answers atheist resort to becoming offended to their core and hurling everything including the kitchen sink. The point im making is I get why us Christians would be offended but I dont get why so much offense is taken when I question evolution and raise very serious questions? If I disproved evolution for an atheist why should they care and why should they care to the point of losing their mind? Why not just become more knowledgable and see if theres a rebuttal? Or maybe look into other areas for answers? To summarize, the stakes for Christians are high so I get the reaction. With atheist though, you have already decided there is no God so the offense shouldn't exist given in their mind it just means they must have came about some other way.
I used to work in a food factory and on the 29th of febuary 2000, my team leader printed off hundreds of thousands of labels by simply adding a 1 to the year 2000, for a product that had a 12 month shelf life. He didn't think the 400 year leap day was special. Neither did his manager 🤣.

Anyway, we need more NDT, everywhere, anytime.

The same can't be said with religion and their nut job followers

"It's a fucking awesome calendar" - Neil deGrasse Tyson

I disagree on that point, but I do agree that the monks who figured this out were very good at what they did in this regard.

Whereas, here he's talking humbly (despite his big loud voice) and intelligently about an interesting topic that so many people are arrogant and ignorant about. And he obviously must be a nice man, since it seems to annoy him so much that large swaths of atheists are rude, obnoxious and arrogant.
I also usually have issue with the way he expresses... Even in this clip when explaining about leap year... But he does bring his fair share to the table...all the time.

Godspeed, meaning "a prosperous journey," comes from the Middle English phrase God spede you ("God prosper you"). It was originally used to wish success to someone, like saying, “May you prosper.” These days it's more often used to express hopes for a safe trip
Godspeed was also the name of one of the ships that voyaged to America in the 1600s
In other words, Live long and prosper. Heh, even the Vulcans are unwittingly channeling the divine.
You know that from the movie "the rock" right ;-) j.k.
A lot of words are inherited from cultures. It's just that the culture we have now want to erase everything we've built.

SO to push the boundaries of science - since we appear to be at a cross roads of only being able to measure up to a minute instance in time after the "big bang" known as Planks Wall. we must ask ourselves are we at the beginning or is there something beyond it. He is slightly inaccurate about the Gregorian calendar. Easter frequently lands on Passover because the Jewish calendar in not a solar calendar or a fully lunar calendar, but a lunisolar calendar which specifically ensures that Passover falls out after the vernal equinox. The point im making is I get why us Christians would be offended but I dont get why so much offense is taken when I question evolution and raise very serious questions?
