The Smiles Family invites me over their house and a sleepover.

I miss the smiles family, i remember watching this when i was younger and being excited about it. I hope they do end up coming back. The cutscenes are just on point and learning the lore was so much fun.

After coming back to this video nearly four years later, I realize how much the smiles family is based off of the shining. It also seems to have elements of both the book and the movie. The father breaks down the door with an axe to kill his family, and ends up using his weapon to kill himself after telling his children to run and remember that he loved them. In the second part, there was even a ghost bartender named Lloyd. There was a masquerade party that ended in tragedy, leaving ghosts to haunt the house. At the end of the story a dude came to take the remaining away from the island. Their CZcams channel had a video of zooming into their house and playing the same song as in the end of the shining. And probably the most obvious reference, the house number was 217.

A legitamately felt sad when Robert died, I'm so glad the kids got out. At first I though Mathew would die because he came out of the house late. This myth has such an amazing back story, I really hope you continue this series on the Smiles Family.

17:13 I just realized this is a "The Shining" Reference.
In the movie, the main character, Jack, is convinced by ghosts that he should kill his family. Just like Robert.
Jack then takes an axe, and breaks through a door, resulting the famous meme/scene "Here's Johnny". Just like how Robert did.
When Albert screamed after being told the boiler was going off, it was so touching because like you guys pointed out, he went from trolling kids to protecting them, even though the kids were just apart of a game. And he mentioned in a couple videos later, that he didn't want to kill the children, which is so nice of him. But I really think it was because they welcomed and included him in their household, and they wanted to make him apart of their household which is so sweet. But I think he just got used to his fake, in game friends.

recently watched "the shining" for the first time in my life. wow, the similarities plot and structure wise with the plot of the shining and the plot for the smiles family are literally insane. i genuinely appreciate this story so much more, especially the masquerade reference and Lloyd, the bartender, who has the exact same name and attitude in the movie. it's literally so well planned, so thought out.
edit: having there be a "person in the bathtub" is also such a good reference!
