  • My last adventure with Final Fantasy was FF8 which... hopefully by now we all know my feelings on that game haha. Determined to re-fall in love with Final Fantasy again I played FF4 and I was not disappointed! This game is so classic Final Fantasy! The airships, the underground world, a kingdom of monks, a thieves hideout it's EXACTLY what the doctor ordered.
    " The dark knight Cecil, stripped of his command of the Red Wings, set out for the distant Valley of Mist. Together with Kain, commander of the Dragoons, he would pursue a faceless quarry―and a chance for redemption. The advent of the airship had marked the realization of mankind's most ancient dream. But man is a creature seldom sated, and he was quick to dream anew. With the unparalleled might of the Red Wings, Baron's military soon reigned supreme. Why, then, does its king now seek the Crystals? And why have fearsome monsters suddenly begun to overrun the once calm land? If the Crystals know, they share no answers―only their pure and silent light. "

    The After Years doesn't exist in my universe.😏
    This game... This damn game was so mind-blowing when it came out. It was the first time I'd ever seen such a complex story in a video game. Like you said, it's trite now--but it's trite in the way Halloween (1978) is a trite slasher. It has all the tropes you expect in a slasher, but that's because--like FFIV--it ESTABLISHED those tropes. It was the grandaddy of modern RPG's. It was to fantasy RPG's what 2001: A Space Odyssey is to science fiction. Then when you throw in Nobuo Uematsu's music... It was fantasy RPG SHANGRI-LA, Pelvic.

    • @JoelBurger
      @JoelBurger Před 3 lety

      Except most of the tropes in FF4 originated in an earlier FF game. Brooding anti-hero who temporarily goes against the party? An evil empire? Party members who sacrifice themselves? Moments where it seems the story is wrapped up, only for an even stronger evil to pop up? An antagonist with a personal connection to the heroes? It was all done before. Calling it the grandaddy of modern RPGs would be ignoring a bunch of what came before, both within FF and in other series like DQ.

    My 1st RPG, It was so dope as a kid. The story arc of each character (simplistic but it’s an early FF). The different airships, going into the underworld, going to the moon. Story-wise, it's hard to look back on FF4 now that FF2 is much more widely available and playable. Because after playing both, it's clear that 4 is basically just 2, but without any of the bite. Whereas 2 drove home the horrible cost of war, with most of your optional party members (and most of the known world) dead by the end of the game, barring Tellah 4 makes absolutely certain that there are no major consequences despite its world-shaping events. Palom and Porom? They'll be fine, don't worry. Yang? He can survive being in an exploding building no problem. And why not, Cid can be at ground zero of a bomb explosion (as he rides the bomb down onto a mountain).
    I honestly think 4 would be considered much less groundbreaking if prior entries in the series actually came out in the states.

    WHO is saying that Final Fantasy 8 is Uematsu's best work!? I WANT NAMES! Okay, not really; I do like 8's soundtrack, but that just comes as a big shock to me. In my circles, at least, it is agreed that Final Fantasy 4 has one of the greatest soundtracks of all time, not because each track is perfect, but because of how consistently good it is. Of course, The Prologue on the original SNES sound chip is probably my favorite video game song of all time, so there's that. I'm really glad that you enjoyed this one; it's so cheesy and melodramatic at times, but it really makes you believe it! I'd been into RPGs since the first Dragon Warrior came stateside, but this one was the first one that left me completely starry-eyed; this is my favorite Final Fantasy and second-favorite RPG of all time (Live-A-Live is still number one). I even wanted to learn how to play the harp because of this! It didn't happen, because my sister got all of the musical talent in the family (I'm good at sound editing, but I can't play an instrument), but the sentiment was there. Better yet, it never had a guide that I'm aware of, and as much as I hate it when the best equipment is randomly dropped by enemies, it did lend this sense of mystery and wonder to it all. You beat the game, you killed the big-bad, but you could never be sure that you'd discovered it all... until GameFAQs and hex editing guides became a thing, anyway.

    When I revisited this recently, I found myself wishing Cecil had more of a real arc. His class change is really mostly cosmetic, since we never get to see him as a true bad guy. He has grave doubts about his king from his first scene on and turns against him outright shortly after. He always seems like an honorable guy who just wants to do the right thing and protect his companions.

  • @jedgrahek1426

    I honestly really enjoyed the ds remake. Having everything in 3D, having cinematic cutscenes with voice acting (I did the thing, which was easy on the ds if you had a flashcard, of just dumping all the Japanese voice acting files into the NA release of the game, so that it played like a subtitled movie... that probably helped a lot with the experience).... it felt more like a true remake, a true new experience; and this is coming from someone who played the original as a kid when it came out (yes I'm old). I can definitely understand just liking the purity of the nice 2D psp version (and I completely agree about The Afterthought lol), but I wouldn't dismiss the ds version so quickly. It can be a very fun way to experience a classic in a new way. Just make sure to use the JP voices lol, it makes a huge difference.

    Ah, you didn't do the Lunar Ruins. there are actually segments that expand on each character's story or traits. Kain's is the best one, as it is about his love towards Rosa and envy to Cecil. And the extents he would go to. Great video though, I did not play the After Years mostly for the reasons you mention.

    I played the PSP version of FF4 on my Vita after beating FF6, also on my Vita. I really liked 4 but HATED the After Years. I dropped it super hard in the last chapter when it was revealed the last dungeon is like 99 floors or something like that. I hadn't met anyone who's heard of it, much less played it. I'm glad I'm not the only one who dislikes it so much! Sometimes it felt like a dream.
    The After Years being released episodically makes a whole lot of sense because good golly gosh, was it a slog to get through.

    The only way I got through After Years was playing the iOS version on my iPad and abusing the auto save feature. Every time you start a random fight you just close the app and re-open it and you'll be in the same place on the world map, with the battle being skipped. Most bosses didn't really require grinding until the end. I don't know how many hours I saved doing that :D
