- In this episode of my series “ New Forest Walks” , I take a walk starting & finishing at the old disused railway station at Breamore in Hampshire, taking in the pretty village of Woodgreen and some stunning scenes along the way. Virtually all of the walk is inside the New Forest National Park. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
I start my 6.5 mile circular route at the old railway station which is located to the East of Breamore village. Around 2 miles of the old Salisbury & Dorset Junction Railway line (closed in 1964) from South Charford to Upper Burgate is now designated a public footpath.
After exploring the old station building (it has an information board on one side), I head South towards Upper Burgate. I leave the old line at Burgate Cross & continue South along a footpath beside the A338 to Lower Burgate at which point I head East through Burgate Manor Farm.
I cross over the River Avon at the suspension bridge just East of the farm & head across water meadows to Folds Farm. Here I head North with Godshill Wood on my right & the Castle Hill earthworks (it has been a bronze age burial mound, iron age hill fort & a Ringwork & Bailey castle in the past) on my left.
At the top of Castle Hill there are some amazing views to be had across the Avon Valley below.
It is not long before I drop into the pretty village of Woodgreen with it's delightful pub, village hall & church. Continuing Northwards along the Avon Valley Path I reach St Mary's Church at Hale.
At this point I re-cross the River Avon & head West to South Charford. The footpath isn't that well marked across the water meadows - basically as soon as you cross the bridge, turn left (South) and after about 400 yards, follow the edge of a field Westwards. Eventually you will meet a stile and the public footpath waymarks start to appear again!
At South Charford - where there was once a chapel and was possibly the site of Cerdic's Ford (scene of a battle in 519AD) - I rejoin the old disused railway line and head South back to the old station.
After the walk, I took refreshments at the Bat & Ball pub in Breamore.
There is a Forestry Commission (free) car park at the top of Castle Hill - at the viewpoint - as an alternative starting & end point. There was limited parking in a layby overlooking the River Avon ,close to the bridge at Breamore Mill, which was not too far from the railway station (there is a public footpath across a field from close to the Mill to the old railway line).
NB: As part of the route involves paths across water meadows (close to the River Avon - which floods often after heavy rain), the walk is best done during the "warm & dry" months.

Thanks Dave. Another fabulous film showing Gods own county in all it's wonderful glory.
Thank you Lance. :)
Thank you for sharing your lovely New Forest walk on such a perfect autumn day. 🦮 Logan seems an ideal companion. Its a delight to watch him enjoying his adventure as much as we enjoy watching you both. Cheers and happy trails to both of you 🍻
Thank you. Yes, Logan is a good lad and a great companion to have on my travels. Thanks for watching.
Amazing countryside walk with stunning scenes
Many thanks Keith. :)
Good evening dave very enjoyable video I really do enjoy local history and I really like the walks on old railway lines beautiful scenery gorgeous weather to what more do you want nice to see logan go for a paddle.
Thanks Craig. It is not often that the water is still warm enough for Logan top enjoy a dip that late in the year!
Another interesting and enjoyable video Thank you
Thank you Colin.
Another really interesting walk that we intend to try out for ourselves!
A great walk for the Summer Pauline (when the water meadows are not flooded!).
A really lovely walk Dave. Nice to hear Salisbury getting a few mentions!
I plan to do a walk at Old Sarum this Summer1
I think the bridge station building and and platform are grade 2 listed it’s a beautiful building full of history glad it survived
Thanks for the information about the station building & platform. It is great that it is still in good condition.
Enjoyed this, thanks!
Thank you Hannu. :)
You picked a lovely day for that walk Dave. I must go and have a look at that station, I did not know that they had restored it. It was a pity that the Wood Green hall was closed, it is amazing inside. Great walk, thanks Dave.
Thanks Peter. Yes, I must go back to visit the village hall when it is open as I understand that those murals are amazing to see.
Really lovely walk breamer house is nice didn’t know there was a station there ; thanks for all the info on the area
Thanks Ralph. It is great that the station building has been so well restored - it really adds to the walk.
Beautiful walk, unfortunately we tackled it today, early summer, and the old railway line is overgrown with nettles and fairly impassable near the section that joins with the main road. Probably best followed in the winter and early spring. Great video though Dave and particularly enjoyed crossing the meadow and the many Avon tributaries 🙂
Sorry to hear about the nettles. Sounds like work needs to be done to make it more accessible. Hopefully the ground had dried up for the section across the meadows.
Lovely walk Dave. There is a much larger and more impressive village green on the upper road to Hale which perhaps you could incorporate in a future walk!
I will certainly include that large village green on a future walk for sure. Thanks for watching.
Dave you pick some of the most amazing scenic area’s , Just a beautiful day for a walk and Logan seemed to enjoy it. Gorgeous cottages. I loved this area. Thanks Dave and Logan👏🏻
Thank you Melissa. The River Avon was looking quite enchanting in the Autumn sunshine!
Another gem of a walk Dave, love the historical interest in your videos, thanks again to you both 😉
Thank you Nick.
Stunning beauty of the New Forest Dave and great video post. You put them together so well with a lot of hard work I know.
Thank you Geoff. We were lucky with the weather with that one!
Great video, Dave! 😍 The New Forest looks stunning, and the suspension bridge is amazing! 🌉 Thanks for sharing this lovely walk with us. 👍🏼
Thanks. We had some fun crossing that bridge!
The sun looked quite low as you finished this beautiful walk. Nice to remember the autumn colours as the trees are so bare at present but still interesting in silhouette. The suspension bridge looked good fun and quite amazing.
It was an odd feeling crossing that suspension bridge for sure (quite "bouncy"!).
This is really great Dave. That morning light and that bridge. I will watch this several times. : )
Thank you David. It really was a perfect Autumnal day.
Yes it's lovely
Hello Dave. Mary and I walked from Breamore station down to Burgate Cross a while ago. However, we then caught a bus back to Salisbury . I have to ask, but how did you get onto the platform at the start? I thought it was fenced off. Now seeing the rest of your video, I think we might try that section from Burgate back up to Chalford. It looks very interesting. Thanks for the pretty walk.
Hi Lionel. The East platform has no fencing. There is a fence partly around the restored station , on the West platform but there is an access / entry point on the Northern side by the information board.
Thank you for such a lovely and informative video, I really enjoyed watching it. I should like to try this walk. I had no idea there was a station at Breamore. Do you have any tips for parking?
Thank you. There is a small "layby" (on the Western bank of the River Avon) on the gravel track that goes South to Shallow Farm (the track forks right off the main road just before the bridge at Breamore Mill). I then took the public footpath across the fields, Westwards, to join the old railway line about 100 yards South of the station. Alternatively, as it is a circular walk, you can park at the Forestry England car park at the view point on top of Castle Hill ...... or indeed at the Horse & Groom pub in Woodgreen if you are going to be using that afterwards. As part of the route uses footpaths across water meadows, it is very much a walk for the "warm /dry" months as the River Avon often floods!
Thank you.
"The western arm rises east of Devizes" - you're a poet and don't know it! 🙂Lovely walk as usual, Dave. Can i ask where you parked for this one? I dont think you mentioned it. Take care, Kev
Thanks Kev. @@DaveFord Thanks so much, Dave - yes, I'll add it to my summer walk list!
Hi Dave, continuing to love your videos! Just a quick question, where was the best place to park for this walk? Kind regards, Henry
Thanks Henry. There was limited parking in a layby overlooking the River Avon on the Western bank , just off a small track to Shallow Farm, close to the bridge at Breamore Mill (, which was not too far from the railway station (there is a public footpath across a field from close to the Mill to the old railway line). @@DaveFord Thanks Dave. Looking forward to completing that loop soon! Regards, Henry
