I'm a child-free millennial who visits the library at least twice a month. I love checking out cookbooks, coffee table books, magazines, and movies that are trending before buying them. There are so many kind and helpful people who work there. It's so peaceful there so always enjoy going even just to pick things up. My grandmother and I YEARS ago used to volunteer at the library which was so fun as a kid.

I love the library and bookstores. Gen Z and millennials like all forms of media. Reading, TV, Video Games, and Social Media. We are not stupid like so many older generations think we are. Also, a possible reason for people perceiving Gen Z and millennials "reading less" might be school work is amped up higher than ever, and people want to socialize.

Gen Z here who works at a library! It's always amusing to see the confusion on the faces of "older" (but not elderly, mostly late 30s-early 50s) people when I tell them what I do for a living. Library? Didn't those die out years ago? Yet here we are every day, offering better services than ever, while older generations continue to act puzzled as to young people's behavior. I suppose we'll never really understand one another 😅

libraries modernized and now seamlessly allow users to hold, track, renew, and return books and other media so easily. it's like a shopping app. i have no doubt this is a major reason why the interest has gone up a lot. so keep investing in tech.

I know we're naturally prejudiced against a lot of terrible new books, but they all fit into our imperfect lives because they're so bad. For people in my generation, it's really shocking to see how hard it is for them to understand that an author (for example, a friend who writes) can be a cultural reformer (without asking everyone to imitate him), rather than merely a "mile marker" on the "road of reforms". Maybe if we allowed there to be any such reforms made, things would get even more dangerous. Maybe that's why we don't consider any of our friends to be literary reformers: we simply consider them to be opinionated loudmouths who are a dime a dozen. The problem is that nobody takes his friends seriously about anything. The whole point of the federal backbone was for people to ask each other, "How can we prevent our right to a jury trial from being taken away?". There are some very DEEP, potentially permanent problems here. People don't know how to sense whether someone is hoping to be able to remember a moment forever or hoping that he will never remember it again. The whole point of books is lost. We read OUR books, specifically THESE ONES, because they come in tandem with comments such as the one which you have just read. Thank you, have a nice next read. You're the future, and we all know how bright you are.

I’m a millennial. I use the library all the time, not necessarily for the materials, but just so I can have a quiet place to think.
I also think it’s important to have a “third place” - preferably, one that is not a business. With the huge amount of bedroom communities that were built in the past few decades, our society is losing our “third places.” I remember growing up in the 90s and having access to parks, playgrounds, the town square, the library, etc. In abundance. Now, we spend all of our time either at work/school, or at our suburban homes, going directly between the two and never interacting with the world outside of it. Access to libraries can help buck that trend, but honestly, I suspect this problem will get worse before it gets better.

@NHLblkgurl I have a copy of “A Wrinkle In Time” that I checked out of one of those mobile library vans from the 80s. I still remember it was an old FedEx or UPS vehicle converted into a roaming Library. They’d come once every other week and I never seemed to be around so I couldn’t return it. Then we loved. At the time, in 1987 I had racked up $1.00. It was was nickel every two weeks the book was late.

Checking out books at the library will work very well if you live near by all the time, do not migrate to another State for work/employment and have the time to wait for a book on reserve and read that book.
If not, then the library has e-books, downloadable audiobooks, music and videos online; and those are much more convenient to get.
I get e-books all the time. Physical books, not so much.
Maybe when I live in one location all the time, I will use the physical library more. But right now, I can't.

You just show up and you are instantly welcomed as a member of the community. I'm not surprised they are more popular than ever. It isn't just the physical books, it's the place you go to see other humans who have no expectations of you.
