- My amateur attempt at a Regency updo based on two illustrations from 1813 and 1814, in which I try to force my very long hair into something that might have graced the head of Elizabeth Bennet.
Reference pictures are from La Belle Assemblee editions from December 1813 and May 1814.

"Welcome to Spinster's Hair Salon!" 😂
No hair styling in the library 😂
ugh, hard plastic curlers were the bane of my childhood. My mother "fixed" my hair everyday for school. The hairstyle reminds me of the Greek goddess statues. Well done. Also, in regency you would have had a maid to help or a sister at least. =) This was fun! The Cher look was cool. Bring it back en vogue
I believe a lot of Regency fashion was inspired by those Greek statues!
That's a gorgeous look, I'm so stealing it but will use rag curls instead
Great idea!
If you Google "hairdresser on stilts," the first thing to come up will be a Regency-era satirical cartoon showing a man on stilts trying to wrestle a woman's very long head of hair into shape.
I think you did a good job! The hairstyle looks very typical of the 1840s and 1850s, too.
Accidental Victorian 😂
Very pretty Claudia! Well done :)
This is so fun!
This was so much fun, congratulations on what certainly looked like a difficult hair-style to make! ! It makes one think that those Regency Ladies must have devoted a lot of time to doing their hair according to the fashion of the time.
I hope we'll get more videos from your Hair Salon :)
I expect the Regency ladies had a maid or two to help with the hair :D
A leaf motif!!!! That made me smile haha
Thank you :D
Your Jane Austen content this month has all been so fun and creative! As a theatre/dance person, those spin pins are a lifesaver! I really love the way defined ringlet curls look so I always get excited when I get to use them for a costume :)
Ringlets are fun and now I want a perm! Yeah, those pins are fantastic, I cannot be bothered with dozens of bobby pins just to hold up a bun.
I think you did an amazingly good job! BRAVA!
Thank you so much!
Congrats on your courage to do this hair style, I think it looks pretty 😎
This was so fun! Also “silver leaf fillet” cracked me up because I was just picturing some kind of glitzy steak hair pin 😂
I just have no idea what they mean by that in the magazine 🤣
I think you did an excellent job!
the way your hair looks is the greek and how they wore back then.but you came close to trying. :) it looks great! wish my baby fine hair can hold curls! lol i got a ringlet hair piece that has
a look of jane austen's time. love the curls! :)
Haha, the curls sadly didn't last long 😅
@@SpinstersLibrary aaaww that sucks! you are a joy to watch and you have a great personality! :)
I was simply trying to say . your hair is beautiful the way it was. no need to change it. sorry if you felt like it was a attack. love your channel..
It’s super pretty and I love the grey shade of your hair! I went natural too a couple of years ago, I love it haha!
A very fun experiment. It turned out really cute in the end. I enjoyed watching your hair styling adventure.
Thank you! It was a lot of fun to record but reminded me why I don't faff about with bobby pins and curls every day
Oh joy. Thank you for doing this and sharing it with us.
Glad you enjoyed it!
This was so fun! It turned out really well.
Thank you!
This was great 😂 Hats off to you - I could not have attempted anything nearly as good without the help of a lady’s maid! 👏 And if you go full Cher, that will be impressive with the amount of hair you have!
I am really tempted...
My history loving heart just melted
❤
first victorian hair, now regency hair....do medieval peasant next!!! you're having so much fun with this and I love it!
Hm, medieval hair would be fun!
Funny and original ! And I think it really becomes you :)
Thank you!
I love videos like these. Historical hairstyles look amazing and I want to try them....and then like you I have gobs of super long hair and it's a bit much to deal with! I really should try foam rollers. Thanks for doing this! And the end result is really pretty.
The rollers were such a pain to take out though! I don't know what the best way is to curl long hair, but I'm going to try out a curling iron next because I really like the look of those curls
I always thought your hair is really pretty! Awesome video
Thank you so much!
Namaste Claudia dear😀💖💖💖💖💖 This was refreshing😂😂😂😂😂Honestly - you were quite close but the best part was "skull made of steel" !!! 👍👍👍👍👍💖and undoing the rollers from your hair😊Very innovative💞👍👌
Thank you! Those rollers were such a pain
@@SpinstersLibrary I agree!!! But the extend of pain the Regency Ladies could bear- for the sake of Fashion ! Skulls made of steel😊💖
Brilliant job. I think you look amazing 😊
Thank you! 😊
You definitely captured the Regency vibe. I’m impressed. I hope you get as many views as the Brontë hairstyle did. Back in the day I had rollers like that but they were hot rollers so thank goodness there was no need to sleep in them. Just a few minutes and “ta da” ringlet like curls. (I have no idea if these many years later, they are still available to buy.)
Hot rollers? Oh no I might have to buy those now I know they exist.
I think this looks fabulous! And the curls too. I would wear my hair like that now, just saying :)
Yeah I may have ordered a curling iron approximately five minutes after recording this video 😂
I also don't understand how anyone can sleep with rollers in - getting to sleep is hard enough without. The ringlets are stunning but I think the 80s look is better than the Regency one in the end! I wish I had the patience for this level of hair styling.
Admittedly I did have the tv on while I put those rollers in
Love the curls on you! I, too, have straight hair and been never tempted to curl them before this. Now I think I should give it a try.
On a side note, what is your PhD topic? I thought something related to Regency music and literature. Thanks!
It's on domestic music and gender in early 19th century Britain 😊
My hair would never hold the curl in the front. It goes straight so fast! Good job with problem solving! That would be tricking to figure out with your hair length.
Yeah my hair deflated after an our or two, sadly.
@@SpinstersLibrary So now you are 'entirely as nature left you' - how shocking! :-) Only joking, your natural locks are fabulous.
I'm growing out my hair in order to curl it into old-timey hair styles. It will take awhile...
I wish you patience! Vintage hairstyles are so much fun, but my hair is too long for most of them.
@@SpinstersLibrary yeah, it will take a few years to get my hair the right length to do anything with it though.
Oh hell no woman . your hair was perfectly fine the way it was...
Lucky I don't do my hair to please you.
