Hello, as an Argentine I have to clarify some things:
1-Ours was not or is arrogance, and if it were for something it is ... we have 15 America cups, 2 world cups, etc (and only at the national team level, not to mention at the club level) that without counting the 6 U-20 world cups.
2-Chile is not a rival of Argentina (although the Chileans believe it ahahaha, just look at the history) as if they are Uruguay or Brazil
      Nice video, greetings

Great video, I'd like to add that they weren't just playing against their rivals, but also against the sports media here in Argentina, which is and has been the biggest load of bullshit and uncalled criticism towards the players and coaches, and specially towards Messi, speculating about his demeanor on the pitch, questioning why he had won with Barça but not with Argentina. When the real question was, why Argentina wasn't able to win having Messi? Encouraging the population to hate on him, so that's why you saw him collapse as soon as the whistle was blown, and all his teammates were running towards him.
To picture this up, imagine that just before the final, some of the big name "journalist" were saying they'd rather want Argentina to loose in order to get rid of Scaloni the head coach.
That's why sometimes you can hear the players chanting against the journalism after a win.

  • @gastonzumbo9860

Molina and Pezzela played because Montiel and Cuti Romero were carrying injuries, in fact, Romero had complications on his knee and just hours before the final he started to be able to jog, so he essentially had to convince Scaloni that he wasn't going to break mid-match, because he wasn't about to lose the chance to play.
Armani on the other hand, had been the first choice goalie for a while, but Martínez stepped in the Qualifiers prior to copa america because of Franco's complications with COVID, so the game Armani started against Bolivia was more of a "I gotchu fam" kind of thing, to recognize the player even if Martínez had largely taken his spot as #1.
Scaloni made quite a few changes but they were mostly sensible, like playing Palacios, Correa and Papu Gomez against Bolivia to save up energy, giving Acuña the spot against Brazil because, as mentioned, Lo Celso drops deep and plays centrally, so Acuña can overlap through the left with ease, and so on.
A very very stark difference from Sampaoli's time, crazy considering Scaloni says he learnt a lot under Sampa.

Arrogance when you win, tears when you lose, that's the basis of south american football. It comes from how passionate we are over here in general, but mostly with football. Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay have been by far the most successful national teams in South America being the only ones to win the world cup, all at least twice, and having won the copa america the most times. No one shies away from a little condescending attitude here when it comes to football, like Colombian players dancing after a goal, Brazil's president saying they'll win 5-0 ahead of the final. It's part of football's folklore and it's what keeps it alive imo

Two things that should be considered here.
7 finals for a team is a major achievement, which is often not taken into account. In itself reaching the finals for a nations team is already a victory, but in these cases it is not counted as such.
To belittle a gold medal is an insult to sport in general. It does have special rules regarding the players but it is still an Olympic gold medal.

I understand where you are coming from, but everything has to be put into context.
What you say is true for most countries. But Argentina, like Germany, Brazil etc is an elite country. To not win is a dissapointment- does not matter if they simply reached the final.
And as for the Olympics, that must also be put into context. I did state that my intention was not to belittle the trophy. But the level of competition in a World Cup, Euros or Copa America is many levels above what you'll find in the Olympics. While this is a fantastic achievement, put into context, several Argentines remained dissatisfied.

@@FootballIconic Fair enough, but still 7 finals shouldn't be seen as a "failure" just because all were lost but rather an achievement by playing them.

Only if Aguero was the 1st choice striker in the finals Messi has been, he would have won everything. And Di Maria, he is the unsung hero of the Argentine team. Aguero, Di Maria and Messi has been playing together and won the U-20 World Cup, The Olympics. Messi did everything when he was needed but players like Higuian, Palacios had that opportunity to perform and win for Messi and Argentina, and they failed. Messi is not to blame, he is a true captain and leader who does his job i the pitch. People who criticize Messi doesn't, I think knows how much he wants to win for Argentina. That and Messi at the start of the season was having a horrible relationship with barcelona so that must have made quite an impact with his form for the first few months of the season.
He started regaining his form when the young prospective players like Ansu Fati and Pedri stepped up, he probably saw a light of a bright future with this team and he started smiling again. After then you can see his form by looking the stats at the start of 2021, his goalscoring record is tied with Lewandowski at about 40 something with around 14 assists, that is ridiculous. He could end up with 70 goals by the end of this year, plus he just won the copa which eased him so much we might see his best form out of the recent years.
