Considered as the Godfather of Pinoy soul, Rico J. Puno had a robust voice to go with his soulful interpretations. He demonstrated this with aplomb on his record entitled “Tatak Rico J” wherein he injected a sensitivity into his singing that turned all the songs from this hit-strewn album into certified gems worthy of the era.
There’s also an unmistakable male assuredness that he imbued about his singing that turned string-laden songs such as “Kapalaran” and “Damdamin” into studies of how a male balladeer should approach intricate songs such as those just mentioned.
Loaded with Rico J’s hits, this album includes instantly recognizable songs such as “Sorry Na, Pwede Ba” which was written by a then unrecognized but brilliant songwriter that went by the name of Rey Valera. Ditto “Ang Tao’y Marupok” which was a song worked on by novelty music giant Max Surban and ace composer Ernie Dela Peña. And who could not know about the elaborate instrumentation and the hopeful theme that “May Bukas Pa” had within? And of course, there’s “The Way We Were” which Rico J Puno re-imagined and made into his own.
They don’t make recordings like these anymore, and that’s what makes this vinyl album re-issue all the more special. It’s a time-machine to take the listener back to, as Rico J Puno said, ‘the good old days.’
