I preferred the Kawai by a lot, it's much more colorful in the mid range.
was waiting to hear what you thought!
Thanks for sharing. A really good comparison!!
As a concert pianist there is only one piano of the 3 that I use after extensive testing and that is the Yamaha. The Kawai is lovely to play but the sounds are most suited to a home environment. The Yamaha allows one to cut though an orchestra and is phenomenal for it's likeness to playing a grand piano. The Roland is not on par with either and not worth considering.
I have tried the CA99 and I liked it a lot. It also sounded the best of these three in my opinion. Nice playing by you. Thank you.
Thanks!!!!
All other videos only share the direct recordings only and no idea how the speakers sound.
Very nice play and demonstration.
Yes, this is true
Thank you so much! 🎹☺️👍🏻
They all sounded good. On this demo, I preferred the Yamaha, but on another I preferred the Kawai. I have only tested the CLP-785, but it blew me away. There is a price difference.
Nice comparison! I like the ballad piano on the clp-785 alot. Could you make a comparison between the CA-99 SK-EX vs the ballad grand of the clp-785 since the tone of these are more alike i think. I'm very curious about that!
thank you very much for this comparison..!
Awesome comment Jason ❤️👍🏻☺️
Good comparison just for sound judgement if the three top home flagship pianos (at that time)
But having a ca99 against a wall is a no no, because of the soundboard at the back. I made this mistake until I saw a similar comment and the sound is twice as effective away a few feet.
Thank you for this video. I prefer Kawai
It would have been nice to have direct recording from the piano, so we can bypass the piano sound system, which adds biais. That could be another video !
Hi great review! Weird question… could you tell me what the length of the visible part of the white keys are on the Yamaha and on the Kawai? Thanks!
I like the Kawai sound best.
the song you chose was great and i noticed i prefer Yamaha one.thx ;)
What's the first piece of music that you played ? Thanks for the comparison.
Aynı bölümler üzerinden gitseniz...teşekjürler
seems like it is not recorded using Line Out but by a mic to record from built in speakers?
Excellent comparison. I like them all. I think Roland has a bit too much reverb for my taste and it also sounds a bit distant. I suppose this can be corrected, at least partially, by the many many sound controls on board. The other two are much more difficult to decide. Yamaha sounds brighter and this is probably favourable to a lot of people , esp when they hear it for the first time. The Yamaha keys are heavier than Kawai's though. It is a matter of personal preference. You have to play to decide what works for you.
I tried these 3 and bought the 785, as the sound had more depth and the action suited me. I would also have been happy with the CA99 but the Yamaha edged it
I feel the same way and the CA99 is in stock locally for a very good price delivered fully assembled so I may go for it, although the Novus 5 sounds better than any of these but for a much higher price, though it is coming down.
I know this was a long time ago, but can you compare their actions? Did one feel heavier?
@@Zoco101 the Yamaha felt more responsive in terms of giving you a very small resistance which I liked. The other 2 just felt too light. To be honest I just don’t get the ‘heavy’ label associated with the 785, it’s just not a thing with it. I think the previous range of CLPs, the 600 range, we’re not good (I tried one), they were a strange heavy action. But the 700 range is a different ball game in comparison, especially the 785 as it has counterweights. I would always advise try before you buy though

Muito bonito!!!🌟🇧🇷👏🌟🇧🇷👏
I am very satisfied with my Kawai ES 8 but I think I will get a DP for my new flat. I like the CA 99 best (Yamaha is also great) but the Display on the left side of the keyboard puts me off. Will get the CLP785 instead.
You choose a piano based on something so minor like a little display?
Most people do tend to short change the 708 at first. It's true, at the first "turn on" the piano isn't much to listen to. Nice feel though - I love the way the heptic feedback makes if feel like a true piano. The REAL change comes when you modify the sound, pitch, feel through the Piano Designer. Then, and ONLY then does the true pedigree of the Roland digital piano come through. It's like tuning a Camaro to destroy a Ferrari. Once the piano is changed there is no comparison to any digital on the market. But you have to take the time to work with it. It took me about a whole day to find that sweet spot....and then, well .... the Ferrari is still running down the street with it's sustain pedal between it's legs!
Thanks for this comment. Really helpful. I own a Clavinova and i'm considering switching to Roland. With both pianos being equal in sound quality and build (ech with their own flavor, of course) i prefer Roland's looks, interface and apps. Not a big fan of the Yamaha eWorld.
So you're saying its sound ends up being more authentic than the Kawai? I find that hard to completely buy, as it still seems that full modeling still has some way to go before reaching the authenticity of sampling combined with modeling. I often hear the LX-708's tone described as comparatively "thin," and I kind of agree with that.
You didn't hear a thing I said, did you. Read it again. It sounds mediocre when you first turn it on. If you use the Designer to fine tune, sometimes key by key, it's worth the effort. I've used a Yamaha and preferred the 708 over the Clav. It's a personal thing but if you haven't tried the Designer (which you evidently haven't) you can't go by what you hear from someone or read online. I never talk personally about something I haven't tried myself. @@Persun_McPersonson
Can you please explain what could prevent them to tune it initially into its best performance. Or you are talking about bringing it close to your personal preferences?
In this case the comparison itself becomes of different nature, right?
Everyone's taste is different. Roland to myself is in a slightly different league. The 708 can be manipulated enough to one's taste and I believe actually closer to the sound of an upright than the others. This is where folks miss in demos. Listen to any acoustic upright of value, they are by far, have richness in tonality. Finding that crossroad is the key. This demo was as they came, nothing tweaked. Like someone mentioned about keeping the piano away from a wall. In all fairness, it is up to the individual who is playing to find what it may need to bring out the eloquence of the piano. If that means manipulating it's engine or placing the furniture in a location in which it will shine, then that is and should be up to what the individual wants and needs for it to be fully appreciated. This then may lay in the hands of the artist playing.
I would have the Yamaha CLP-785 from the three one .
The pianist comparing all 3 dp seems to be tall. Seeing him play on the 785 and CA99 make them look like a toy. The LX708 looks like a dp on testosterone but sounds muffled. Im real glad for quality video & audio demonstrations like this exposing the products sound performace. The control interface with the 785 is more user friendly so Yamaha for the win with Kawai not far behind.
Potrei sapere se la registrazione dei pianoforti è stata fatta con microfoni esterni o linea diretta?
Ca99 is a beast.
Are you seeking a beast? Or a musical instrument? Or perhaps a musical beast?
So what is your verdict? Which one is on your must have list? I like both Yamaha & Roland but have heard that out of the box the Roland has a phenomenal number of parameters which need to be set in order for it to be at its best.
1. Yamaha CLP785
2. Kawai Ca-99
3. Roland Lx-708.
Nah, 1) Kawai CA99 2) Roland LX708 3) Yamaha CLP785
@@matthewphillips5483 i bought the yamaha clp785. Its very impressive. Very realistic keys and sound. I am so happy. Kawai have a very bad display and the keys are not realistic. The bass isn't deep enough. And kawai have problems with reliability. Roland sound rattle in my ears.

I'm a beginner, and I'm planning to buy the YAMAHA CLP-785. I'll do further research, but I wish I could play like this so I can decide by feeling and not be reading. lol
Maybe you will play like this one day. Good to have goals :-)
I tried out these three models three days ago in a piano showroom. As far as acoustics were concerned:
1: CA99
2. CLP-785
3. LX708
The Kawai really blew me away! Question is though, how much is really too much in the apartment?!
Anyway, most important factor for me was playing with headphones and I found the Kawai sound very dull compared to Yamaha.
So for me:
1: CLP-785
2: CA99
3. LX708
Hi, thx for your comment - very helpful. I am also considering buying CLP 785 but worry about if the key touch noticeably lighter than acoustic piano. I'm currently playing on a Kawai K3 but I need the silent/ headphone option for family. Just wondering if you feel the key playing pretty much the same as acoustic piano? Thx 😊
Chloe. I have the the CLP 785 and I love this piano. The key action is trying to mimic an acoustic grand piano and I find that it is very close. It feels less like an upright and more like a grand piano. The wooden counterweighted keys are excellent for a digital piano but sill feel a little different from a true acoustic piano. With that said, it has a lot of expression and is very fun to play. I agree with Rob, if your children and yourself are playing with headphones, the CLP-785 is very enjoyable. It actually sounds the very best with the headphones on. Lastly, the price. If you want a hybrid piano with a real acoustic action you will pay a lot more to have a digital piano with a true acoustic hammer action.
Can I ask you what mic set up you are using to record this demo?
At that time we used a Sony shotgun microphone plugged directly into the camera. As far as I recall it was a ECM-CG60. Hope that helps!
I have a Kawai CA99 and for me it’s still the most satisfactory sound. The Yamaha CLP-785 with its Bösendorfer engine also is very much enjoyable. I don’t like the brilliance of the Yamaha standard sound, but thankfully you can customise all of it. The Roland loses to both in looks, feel and sound.
Roland looks the best and it's not even close. Very simple: it doesn't pretend something it's not. It is a solid luxury ELECTRIC piano, other two try to be something the are never going to be.
@@virv1ndo973 Agree as with thier price I can get the Real Thing
@@bandar7891 The "real thing" you will get will not be the sounds they are sampling (or modelling). Cheap acoustic pianos are not as great as people assume.
@@hammieddy3826 Est ce que ton avis serait le même pour la gamme clp 745/ kawai ca 59 ?
@@matthewphillips5483 agree
Kawai all the way. Sounds so much better
Yamaha is bright CA99 is warm Roland as a bit of reverb
Reverb is customizable. This video set the Roland up to lose.
I don't care about sounds. I'm going to run it as a midi controller with VSL Synchron Piano Library, Pianoteq Pro, Keyscape etc... Action is all that matters and action-wise Kawai is untouchable.
SO Hey, how did it go? can Ca99 be played with Keyscape.. Does it have a good response time ? not lagging at ALL ?
Yamaha gentle and best.
CA-99 sounds nice but clp-785 also and wins in terms of build quality. Also the navigation panel on the CA-99 is very slow and doens't always respond well while the clp-785 works perfectly and also has ability to connect with yamaha smart pianist app. Yamaha is the winner for me.
A quick note, CA99 is also capable of connecting to its app from where you can edit all parameters in a presumably seamless way (haven't tried it)
Roland sounds like a digital synthesizer 😮
Thank you to give us the sound with microphone !
Youre welcome 😍🎹👍🏻
Meanwhile we tried the Yamaha and the Kawai in a store in the same room. The sound generation of the Yamaha may be very nice with rich samples but I couldn't get my wife away from the CA-99. She loved the key action and the "acoustic-like" sound impression. So we're planning to order the CA-99 shortly.
The CA99 is a very nice piano 🎹❤️
Kawai. No contest.
Based on this Video the Best Sound goes to YAMAHA CLP-785 ...Touch and Sound Ambience.... don't know but I'd get a cheap Acoustic Samick over these Digitals
so whats the closest sounding to real acoustic
Very individual how you experience it.
YAMAHA 785 . more resonance, some strings, natural volume
Resonance? lol. You have never heard an acoustic piano, have you?
Should be line-out recordings. Mic recording is good for showing how that particular mic recording of the piano sounds like, and not much else.
It's a tricky balance though, because how the instrument sounds through the air in the room is also important.
I disagree, Sprellic.
I disagree. I bought an ES920 based on CZcams videos made with line out. I returned it because the speaker sound is horrible.
Yes, you can hear the boxy sounding room this is recorded in but that's common to all three. You can also hear the bass booming and the descant weaknesses.
I agree, you really can’t tell with the video. I have a CLP 785, and I love it. The sound system is amazing, the touch is great. I agree with one of the other users, it is very good with high quality head phones. I had my sister in law play with the headphones on and she thought I was trying to trick her. She asked several time “you really can’t hear me playing?”
Yamaha sounds a lot like real piano, every attack on the key feels visceral because the sound response feels so real. The Kawai sounds very nice but not as real. You could tell they were sampled digital sounds.
Someone‘s a Ghibli fan! 😊
Good video, but should be taken with a grain of salt and i find it more useful if the reviewer is evaluating his feeling. Even though it os subjective i prefer the opinion of several pianists than my ears on a recording of one piano sound. I got a kawai ca99 but not going into comparison, all of these pianos can be extensively customized and comparing them with basic configurations out of the box could be misleading. I find the yamaha too bright and metallic but surely it can have other settings more to my taste, same goes for kawai if one finds it too muffled or boomy. But even considering that aside a real comparison would have to be very well recorded with a proper mic stereo setup. At least the mic should be where the pianist head is because these pianos are not for room sound, they are advanced practice tools and the pianist is the main listener. They all are optimised for the pianist ears, not the room, audience. An accustic grand piano also sounds better than a upright in a room, but a pianist playing an upright is hit with the sound waves and vibration in his face up close. Taking this to the extreme, on recordings digital pianos sound like accustic ones or at least very close, but live and playing them the difference is shocking.
Странно, Вы не учли, когда пишите - " Я нахожу Yamaha слишком ярким и металлическим" А как должны звучать металлические струны? Конечно струн нет в цифровой Ямахе, но ведь она старается копировать акустическое фортепиано.
城堡好听
CA99 base sound feels low end metallic, pool quality speakers, disappointed, I was Kawai fan.
CLP 795 sound can adjust to warmer round sound, base sound is like real grand, speakers sound is three dimensional!
This comment shows that you can't judge from a video: The CA99's bass doesn't come from speakers: it comes from a wooden sound board! You basically can't get a more authentic acoustic bass reproduction since it's the same sound propulsion that accoustic pianos use.
The metalic sense you got may be from the microphones used to make the video, or their positioning. There may have even been a case of the microphone "clipping" from the low bass levels being proportionally too high!
But I can assure you, in person, If one of these speakers excels in bass delivery and authenticity, it's the CA99.
the comparison is unfair since the sound capture has a bas quality... There is to much room in the sound.... and depending on your position to capture the sound, the sound pretty different. Too bad
The sound coming out from the Roland (and also from the Kawai, although less) seem kind of dull, muffled or veiled compared to the much sharper and cleaner Yamaha's.
Not to my ears. The Yamaha sounds like a grand piano recording coming through a clock radio.
@@matthewphillips5483
Have you tried all 3 brands in person?
The Rolands just come alive! Yamahas are so so. Kawais always sound muffled.
Would have been more helpful for you to play the same music on each piano.
The very average recording from the external microphone was a turnoff for all the models presented!
it seems the CA99 has a warmer less sharper sound to me. my question is the 99 suitable to prepare to pass the exam of my diploma of classical music? or is that.a too light keyboard?
@@Martin-id9ks Shouldn't bother with the guy you're replying to. He's a troll on every CA99 video asking the same question and when somebody answers him, he rebuffs people's opinions and continues to question. Man's been doing it for months.
@@Martin-id9ks thanks for your reply
Easy Kawai is the winner.
It is difficult to compare since the sound was recorded using a potato
Bazı şarkılara Roland bazılarına Yamaha gidiyor..Esere göre piyano..
Yamaha is the winner I strongly believe for three major reasons ( by the way I played all three for about 30 minutes on each one ) reason one Yamaha wins the others is Yamaha has the clarity and sweetness in sound where Kwai has a dull and flat sound and booming sound coming from the sound board ( boxy sound ) Roland has a very digitally sound and artificial . Reason two is the action where Yamaha wins both others, Yamaha new action is the closest to grand , perfect balance not too heavy, not too light, nice feeling and has the least key noise in all other digital models, Kwai action is OK but key noise and bonjy feeling action are not so great, Roland action was a disappointment for me all the way, my advice to you is to go with Yamaha ( you can't go wrong for sure ) and that's only my opinion, it's your choice and it's your money .
Reason three?
Have you ever played an acoustic piano?
Prefer the Kawai, softer, milder tone, warmer, more nostalgic. Why does this music sound like it's from a Russian 70s movie?
1.Kawai 👍 (sound)
2,3 Roland, Yamaha
For those that proclaim Roland loses to both Yamaha and Kawai in looks, feel, and sound, shall I remind you that Roland also loses on PRICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Roland is built much better and has more options to tailor the sound than the others. Those others are sampled but the Roland is modelled. I doubt know how he even got it to sound this bad because every other time I have heard it has been the most full sound I have heard from a DP.
it's a digitalpiano ... why not record the audio directly ... 🤔
You hear it the way it goes out of the piano, not the way it's electronically coded, even if it has an obvious impact.
Piano tuner here. The Yamaha was not well-tuned before they recorded. The upper register is not very clean. To me the Roland was not realistic enough, though it had a pleasant sound. I liked the Kawai best. I actually wrote a letter to Yamaha many years ago about the tuning problem in one of their digital pianos. I examined several pianos of one specific model, and they all had the same tuning problems. I suggested that the get three of the top Guild piano tuners in L.A., New York or Chicago, and have them tune it together, then record. Apparently they didn't follow my advice.
1.Kawai CA99
2. Yamaha CLP-785
3. Roland LX708
1. Yamaha CLP-785
2. Kawai CA99
3. Roland LX708
In all honesty, I can't feel a connection to Roland's sound! It's almost lifeless especially if used to play Classical music and Jazz. More suitable for pop and other styles I suppose. Yamaha on the hand is clear and with a purpose and is brilliant, even though I feel the bass is a bit too strong for my liking. The Kawai is very much suitable for Classical Music and Yamaha is more for Jazz and Classical.
Roland is the best built of these three. It also gives you way more options to customize the sound. It is the only one that models the sound instead of just plays back a recording. Maybe learn about what you are talking about before making a fool of yourself.
1. Kawai is definitely the winner sounds sweet and beautiful no comparison (soothing)
2. Yamaha sounds too bright (brittle) almost harsh and hollow sounding. (hurts my ears)
3. Roland sounds like a digital piano, least piano sounding and is thin sounding like the Yamaha, lacks body.
Yes cause he played standard yamaha cfx sound, but if he activate (bosendorfer imperial) sound sampling, yamaha will won
@@bas_rohman People are forgetting that Roland has the strongest speaker system of them all.
The Kawai Ca99 is grossly overpriced and underwhelming. Yamaha Clp 785 is vastly superior in every way
...in your opinion. I think Yamaha is overrated and so is this DP. Kawai and Roland are far superior...especially in the action.
One downside of these pianos is that the pedal feels like s***. It's like stepping on a spring.
Какой неожиданно плохой звук на видео получился с Kawai
The bass tone on the yamaha is garbage! The 708 is by far the closest to real strings
Why does the roland always has the worst sound
Mono sound....I quit listening immediately.
ROLAND: Fake sound YAMAHA : Plastic sound KAWAI is the winner
I don't know if it's just the recording but after Roland Yamaha sounds like a toy. This is my experience from real life as well.
Roland sounded the best. I didn't like Yamaha, synthetic sound, not like a real piano.
Roland won
Roland has the best look 👍👍👍
One thing about Roland is that it has phenomenal setup possibilities. It may not sound as good out of the box but once set up properly is one of the best sounding pianos on the planet.
