In arid and dry landscape of Rajasthan this village stands out like a green oasis. Lapodiya, with little over 300 households is a drought- proof village two hours away from Jaipur. What makes it so special is the fact that it has been able to revive the traditional water harvesting structures to harvest water. Laxman Singh is the man behind this mission. Is it possible to revive a village economy using rainwater harvesting? Yes! Lapodiya shows the way.

When I was growing up in a village in Kerala, most houses were of one to two acres of land. In each house, there was a pond. Then there were bigger ponds attached to temples where people went to take bath. The village then always had water. Now things are different. Houses are in small plots. Ponds are not there anywhere. Water problems have started despite the fact that Kerala has two monsoons. In June July and in November.

Very interesting! There is a similar project in Arizona in the US, where rather than a chauka on the surface, what is done is that a plastic or rubber tub is buried in the ground, usually filled with rocks to make more space for water than would be in soil. So it is like having underground ponds to do this 'chauka' system of collecting rainwater, but because it is under the ground it can be made to take only a very small amount of space, or even it is possible to have pathways over it, so long as it does not block the rainwater collection, and even, because of the gutter along the roads in america, many of these have been built to collect water from special gutters and keep it in the environment.

This is why politicians don't want us to unite but keep us divided on religious, caste & class lines.
When the common man unites, they can do the impossible and make #India a paradise on earth.

This is awesome, great stuff. I've always wondered why rain harvesting isn't more common. Here they cut the water off for hours sometimes during the summertime, but yet we have HUGE rainfall in the rainy season. I'll we'd need is a reservoir to harvest water from regular rainwater.
