  • A passionate swimmer right from his childhood, Suyash Jadhav’s life changed when he was in class 6, after he accidentally came in contact with a rogue wire leading to electrocution and severe burns. He was subsequently admitted to a hospital where the doctors had to amputate both his hands.
Suyash however did not allow this incident to disable his dreams of following in on his father’s footsteps who was a National- level Swimmer. “I am glad that my disability had given me the opportunity to compete at the highest level. In fact, the disability had turned my life for the better," an optimistic Jadhav said in an interview.
Suyash’s life changed again, when he became the sole Indian para swimmer to qualify for the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio. He competed in the S7 category in Rio recording personal best timings in two of his three events, and finishing 9th (50m butterfly), 9th (50m Freestyle) and 10th (200m IM) in the overall standings. With even better preparation and training, Suyash will be one of the medal hopefuls for India at the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo. The road to Tokyo involves several milestones, each more testing than the other:
    1) 2018 Asian Para Games, Jakarta, Indonesia - Suyash is a strong medal contender and will have the opportunity to establish himself as one of the top Para swimmers in Asia, here.
    2) 2019 IPC World Para Swimming Championships (host city to be decided) - This will be Suyash’s third World Para Swimming Championships, and a perfect opportunity to test himself against the best in the world ahead of the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo..
    3) 2020 Paralympic Games, Tokyo, Japan - Suyash’s aim is to compete for a medal here, and if successful, it will be India’s first medal in Para Swimming at a Paralympic Games since Muralikant Petkar won in 1972.
Suyash is currently supported by the GoSports Foundation through the Para Champions Programme, which receives corporate funding from organisations such as IndusInd Bank, Sony Pictures Networks and Bry-Air. The Foundation is offering Suyash assistance with his living, training and sports science requirements including providing him access to a sports nutritionist, physiotherapist, etc. However, to perform at his best at each of the above events, Suyash needs to undergo high performance training internationally, for up to two months, prior to the three major competitions..!
