      @@chapstickwarrior9277 HA! my grandfather fished the Sierras when there was a 25 fish limit he kept every fish. They ate every fish! What catch and release fishing means its a scam where Fish and wildlife will not plant as many fish anymore and we will all share a fish. When the dams were built the spawning was destroyed and they knew it. Massive dams along the Columbia, Snake Sacramento, American, Feather. etc. etc. etc. Back in the 1950's it was well known that to make up for the destruction of the fishery fish and wildlife would establish hatcheries and plant massive amounts of fish to make up for the loss of the fish habitat. People just forget and they are taught knew BS propaganda and now they are masturbating instead of fishing!

    Your concern for the fish is commendable. I wish more people gave thought to the effects that being caught has on our slippery friends. To that point, I do wish the video had included the notion of putting our hands all over their bodies, especially if our paws are dry - and how it removes their protective mucous. Their layer of slime protects them from diseases and so when we get all of our fancy photos & videos by grabbing them all over their bodies, and then releasing them and they seem perfectly fine, they may not stay that way. One of the first things I see people do after catching and releasing a fish, is wash their hands because of the slime all over them, without giving much thought of where that slime came from, and why it might have been on that fish's body in the first place. Stress is another thing that contributes to their death, so any way that we can minimize that will benefit them. Your video did include some things that I hadn't thought about, especially regarding their weight & organs, etc. So, some great things to think about.

    I used to use hardware for fish handling too but I noticed like you said , it pierces the fish with a big hole. After fishing with some traditional fisherman for some time , I personally prefer barehards or a wet towel at best to assist the dehooking. Unless its toxic, like they say if you hold her gently, it will stay gentle for you, nothings happened to me. Even mackerel, mahi dolphins, big snappers all bare-handled no problem.

    Really happy to see this video. Great info. I hate seeing anyone catch bull reds and not properly revive them. I have saved a few that other people released and did not bother to even try to revive them. Why is there no mention of venting the larger fish???? You can handle them carefully, get there oxygen and energy back up and some will still go belly up, or on there side if the swim blatter is full of air. They cannot submerge or dive back down if you do not vent and then it's all for not. If your going to catch the bigger fish you should learn how to vent them also.

    • @Saltstrong
      @Saltstrong  Před 5 lety +2

      Venting is very important in deeper water (over 20 ft), but it's generally not needed (and sometimes harmful) for fish in the shallows like what was shown in this video.

    Non swiveling fish grips are bad for fish. If it thrashes its jaw is done. Just use your hand with a glove. Your wrist swivels and you can release if need be.

When i put it in The water to revive it, it was very active and swam away from my hand vigorously. Should i have forced it to do The revival thing? So I fish fresh water, for large mouth bass. I have had a problem recently with some of my releases coming belly up 5-10 minutes after release. This mostly happens when they swallow my lure and get hooked in the throat area and are bleeding. I work fast to make sure they are not getting to much air in the lungs, they swim off strong and i think they will be fine. Any ideas why this might be happening?

    • @tonyacevedo3149
      @tonyacevedo3149 Před 5 lety +3

      Any damage to the throat/gills will greatly reduce the survival rate. If it is a single hook, I recommend just cutting the line as close as possible to the hook and leave it. It will rust out over time. Trying to remove a hook that was swallowed will cause more harm than good. If using lures with treble hooks, I highly recommend switching those hooks to inline hooks. Much easier to remove and less damage. On another note, I have heard of people pouring a carbonated beverage, such as sprite down into the fish's mouth to stop the bleeding. Not sure how effective this is but have heard it from multiple people. The reason for them swimming off fine and then suddenly going belly up could be similar to how someone can get shot in the leg and be able to walk a good distance before the adrenaline finally wears off and the damage sets in.

    What would you suggest?

    • @tonyacevedo3149
      @tonyacevedo3149 Před 5 lety

      You can still do the fish grip technique, you just have to tie them off to your kayak so your hands are free to paddle. Also, if you're in an area with current, face the fish into the current while reviving.
