The wildest apache dance I've ever seen is from an old musical short called Montmartre Madness, featuring the adagio team of Mazzone and Abbott. There are a couple versions of it on You Tube.

I love that scene in City Lights where Chaplin interrupts an apache dance, thinking it's a real fight. Brilliant!

This is great - it's got a really authentic rough edge. Like something out of Genet - only it's got women in it! (the gender split is equal in the staging).

Wow! And it was seventy years before "50 Shades of Gray" let us know women like to be treated really rough and choked. This was ahead of its time.

dance is the reflect of society. and the apache dance was the reflect of the "apaches gangs" that existed in france, and were constituted by youngsters. the apache dance depicts the violence of that gang, the machism and the violence of the society at that period of history. usually the apache dance depicts a pimp and his hoe having a dispute. depending on the choice of the storytelling, the hoe dies, or fight back or kills the pimp. this is a kind of java dance, derived from mazurka. and no, the woman is not hurt. it's like the fake slaps in catch.
