- A 2 way lighting circuit is to be found in almost every domestic dwelling, factory or commercial premises.
They are incredibly easy to wire up, but they do however cause some confusion - until they are properly understood.
We go through step by step how to wire up a 2 way lighting circuit in compliance with the Electricians Guide to the Building Regulations, how to convert one way lighting to two way, and then look at the voltage and current flow around the circuit when alternate switches are operated.
After watching this video you will be much more confident about wiring up this type of 2 way lighting circuit, it really is very simple if you follow the basics and your fault finding skills may improve too.
This is video No.57 on our CZcams channel where we have videos on a wide range of electrical topics.
We also have a CZcams video - ONE WAY LIGHTING FOR ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS - which can be viewed on the following link … • ONE WAY LIGHTING FOR E...

Just started a new Electrical course and find these Videos invaluable, and explained brilliantly, thank you👍
Great to hear that and thanks for watching. Stick with it, learn a little every day and you will surprised how much you know just one year from now. How good will you be in five years, or ten. Its a good trade.
Thanks very much Dave its easy to forget the arrangement when your not doing it day in day out it needs a refresh and then it all comes back so excellent tutorial.
Very true, we all need a gentle nudge to wake up the brain cells occasionally. Dave.
Very good explanations as usual and simplify what seems to be complicated with others
Glad you found it helpful. Thanks.
They just get better and better as you go through the video list. Good channel I've recommended this many Electrician friends who need to recap and jog their memorys. Thanks Dave 👍👍👍
Thanks so much for spreading the word, it really helps. I'm so glad you are finding the videos useful and there are lots more to come. Dave.
Wow! This is very informative, thanks for sharing it with us Dave. It worth it and the best tutorial on the topic for me...wtc
Thanks for the support.
Excellent video again Dave nicely explained this type of learning is just what I need 👍
Thank you Mark. Great comments and really appreciated. Lots more videos to come.
Hi Dave, Thanks for listening and doing this video tutorial. Great quality as usual, easy to understand but technically concise and correct. Keep up the good work 👍🏻
My pleasure. many more videos to follow. Keep watching and thanks. Dave.
Thank you once again for a clear explanation. Keep the videos using this style coming.
Great. That's really encouraging that you like the format. One topic, one video.
Thanks. Dave.
Another great video 👍
Thanks again, really appreciated. Dave.
Thank you for your efforts again. Appreciated.
Happy to have helped and thanks for watching. Dave.
Cheers dave.. Many thanks for the great effort 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thank you very much, really appreciated comments. Dave.
I was thought at college that you can do two way switch connections at the ceiling rose
Twin and earth for the feed and three core and earth to each switch linking the yellows with a connector block , great video Dave as always
There are several variations. We have just shown the three plate system here which is the IET recommended way now. We are doing another video on the two plate system which was and still is popular. Thanks for the feedback and interest. Dave.
Nice one Dave....👍
Thanks Gary. I will be doing two plate lighting soon (or Spanish lighting to you)
Take care. Dave.
nice video thanks again
Appreciate your great comments. thank you. Dave.
Lighting is the ball ache of most sparkies I know, myself included. Even after years I still struggle to get my head around it, and most other I know do.
Oh yes Richie, and don't I remember those days up a ladder looking at 14 very short wires coming out the ceiling. Keep at it. Lots more videos to come and thanks. Dave.
Hi mate love your videos cant thank enough
Will you kindly do 2 and 3 gang ect too? On way two way please
That's very nice of you to say, Gabbar. Your comment is truly appreciated, thank you.
For the one way switching, can you put the Loop Live into L1 and Switch Live into Common?
Just so I remember 2 way easier as both feed L1 and 'first'
Even if i dont do it this way its good to know.
Thanks mate 👍
Yes you can, one way switching is not as fussy. It's just open and close contacts. Thanks for watching. Dave.
But I can do it any way but I stick to this method
Lots of methods Imran. This method follows one of the assessment methods in the exams. Good luck, keep going, its a good trade to be in. Dave.
So for the light to operate one of the switches should be off whereas the other stays on?
Not quite, the important thing is to follow the route of the electric. We don't need both switches on to make the light operate. Have another look at the video and follow the path of the electric. Dave.
@@learnelectrics4402 which video is this, I said does one switch need to be in the off position for the path to be completed
Grey and grey common at each switch l1brown and brown switch 2 brown l1 switch 1 blue and black l2 switch 2 l2 black
Thanks for watching Imran, appreciated. Dave.
So where the voltage came from the two switches it all came from
It will come from the consumer unit to start with and return on the neutral to the CU. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching. Dave.
Wonder why in north America we call these 3 way switches. Is it because we use a 3 wire or 3 core cable with ground wire? Anyway great video as usual
Good point Lyle.
Two holes in the back UK 1 way - US 2 way (two holes)
3 holes UK 2 way - US 3 way (three holes)
Makes you wonder why we can't standardise and who is right.
