As a kid/teen in the 80's during Cold War there a lot of opposition to Pine Gap which was seen as making Australia a nuclear target for unknown gains.

I am one of two blokes that "Electronically Repaired" the server boards from the Servers running the network. Yes. I am a computer engineer and I shared a job with another person in Sydney. WE did the electronic repair and testing of all the massive electronics there.. How? Never gunna tell.. Why? I loved my job.. Where? Sydney.. name as above..!!! Those servers talk to the US and the rest of the world based on one millionth of a second..
I am an engineer, and this is my Forte.. ya can all go and jump in da lake !!!! you are talking to the engineer that worked on this.. It's now run by... not my issue, as I am terminally ill and do not care one FIG... the electronics there are awesome.. I will never explain as I do not have to.. come shoot me please!!!

Might have to check out this Netflix series on Pine Gap. But the drama button is getting pushed a lot here. I started primary school in Woomera, South Australia in 1975 where my father was stationed as part of the USAF. Woomera was and is closer to the coast but is more austere than Alice Springs. We used to get one plane in one Wednesdays and a train for meat on Thursdays.
Not a secret. Can't be too many people in Australia who don't know about it. Most with an interest in this sort of thing would have some idea about its satellite related role is, due to its location and numerous domes.It's a joint facility - USA and Australia. To my knowledge, the USA does not have any purely US bases in Australia, they are either joint, hosted at Australian sites or entirely Australian.

NEAL, it is NOT a CIA base, it is a joint facility that is CONTROLLED by Australia, with that said, this facility operates on many scales and includes an ability to operate satelite surveillanc on MOST of South East Asia/ THERE ARE NO USA OR FOREIGN BASES ON AUSTRALIAN SOIL/
