For the record, Rhea Island is in fact the northern half of Kronos Island, past the mountain range that acted as a barrier on Kronos Island. In Greek mythology, Kronos and Rhea were married, which is cute
My dumb ass never even thought of that. 🤣That's actually really cool.
20:40 Correction Ian, Sonic's planet was always Earth in the game's canon. "Mobius" was only a term created in the archie comics and in the Sonic SATAM cartoon where it had the freedom fighters. And this was officially clarified in the recent TailsTube videos on the Official Sonic Channel, saying that Sonic and his friends or "Mobians", live in small islands, while the humans live in the large continents in the world. This was made because of the backlash and controversy around Sonic Fans that apparently there is "two worlds" in Sonic canon, the human one and the Sonic one, which didn't make any sense, and it was something that the series producer, Takashi lizuka said in an interview around Sonic Colors's time period.
Correct. Dude, listen, I like Iizuka, in recent times, my respect for him continues to grow more and more, but he still makes the most... QUESTIONABLE explanations about Sonic canon. He's the current head of Sonic Team so he basically controls what's gonna happen with the series. And the fans definitely don't like everything that he states about the canon.
He was the guy that said that there are "two worlds", those being Sonic's world and the human world. Just about everyone (the Adventure fans, especially) didn't like this explanation because it didn't make sense when connecting the classic games to the Adventure games, when it was clearly possible to do this before his explanation.
Just in case you feel like having another example of stupid, he was also the guy that said that the reason why we never see any character other than Sonic, Shadow or Silver go Super is because ONLY hedgehogs can go Super. As if THAT wasn't bullshit enough, he also explicitly stated that only MALE hedgheogs can go Super. Not only is that a load of bullshit because of the Super Transformations in the classic games, but also, there is no in-universe explanation as to why no one else can go Super.
Granted, I don't how anyone achieves a super form in Sonic canon but everyone in-universe just acts and assumes like Sonic, Shadow and Silver are the only ones that can do it, when in reality, no one else tried doing it. It sounds to me like it should be possible for more people other than male hedgehogs to go Super.
Thank the lord that TailsTube exists to clear some of the confusion.
Didn't help that Sonic X (which is another questionable source of canon that came after Adventure 1 & 2's release) had a few things lifted from the anime that became part of the games (such as Shadow's inhibitor rings). That show having two worlds in it (Earth and Sonic's World) is likely where that info came from, though with tweaks would have made sense had the games put any effort to explain.
As for the Super forms, there's a chance that this might have been changed since Knuckles makes a note that things might have been easier against the Wyvern Boss had he been Super Knuckles, but it's unclear on if this was just a joke or referencing that he is capable of doing so as he did in S3&K since he was already making references from that game prior.
Ian Flynn wrote the story for this game, and he is a massive Sonic fan that knows his shit. I believe that he knew what he was doing with that line.
What are freedom fighters?
@@portalgaming8057 Basically, a group of characters from Sonic SatAM (90's cartoon that got expanded in the Archie comics). They covered a number of things story-wise such as plans/tactics to stop Robotnik from taking over the world, personal/character development, Sonic's relationships and love life. The cast had been around for over 20 years which is why you see a lot of fan art of characters like Sally Acorn (Sonic's love interest) and Bunnie Rabbot (the Rouge before Rouge was around. I usually see her as similar to Rogue from X-Men). So those who grew up with the characters since the 90s or kept up with the Archie version comics have been attached to the cast as well as numerous others from that era.
After A LOT of legal bs (caused by a certain artist, who shall not be named, which led to a couple of reboots of the Archie version), SEGA decided to just start from scratch with the comics, giving the job to a different comic publisher IDW and tie it into the events of Sonic Forces as a starting point. SEGA still owns the Freedom Fighters and a few others (though some were lost due to the legal bs but not the main crew) so people have been asking for their return to the series.
One of the biggest hills to climb is their relevance as a lot of new characters and role changes have been added to Sonic's, current, canon that have taken a lot of the Freedom Fighters' roles (such as Amy being more assertive and leader-like which was what Sally Acorn did). It's not hard to bring them back story-wise as there is always a way to do so, but SEGA is really hard to work with nowadays due to the legal bs and they tend to drop older characters in favor of the hot new thing to push the games, though will keep characters like Shadow around since they are popular (which drums up the question as to why the Freedom Fighters haven't returned). The most recent update that I'm aware of is that Sonic Spinball is considered canon to the games and that game does have the Freedom Fighters in it.
TLDR: They are fan favorites from the 90s that fans have been asking for to return (either via comics or games). Ian Flynn, one of the writers for the comics and Sonic Frontiers, has been slowly working to get those characters back into the series, but has to take baby steps to do so due to how difficult SEGA is being with the characters.
This boss battle has no right to be this good. It's incredible!!
Yep the knight is my favourite battle, it’s amazing. The theme has a familiar tune to the infinite theme from forces. Also that end part, sonic literally cut him like what trunks did to Frezia, full on anime. Gave me black knight vibes. Also yeah the fourth island is super short. ❤💙
My will to fight the knight!
Yes I absolutely agree how it’s similar to infinites theme, that’s why my favorite themes from frontiers is Find Your Flame
Oh great. More comparisons between Sonic and Dragon Ball. As if the comparison isn't already overused
@@charleswestover8483 The comparisons in this context are greatly positive though.
12:04 "ahhhh yes, they finally made it on top of the Towe- wait, no, what are you doing, where are you goi- nonononono, waaaait, ahhh Goddamnit NOOOOOOOO!"
- more or less my reaction in real time 🤣
To be fair, this *looks* like a thing that will take you all they way up to the spinning part. And then... it turns out it isn't.
There are some really really interesting idle dialog from Sonic during this island (Don't remember if some or all of it is unused data mined or in the game) but it is a crazy treat to listen, gives more insight on what sonic's doing to himself to save everyone.
I BELIEVE it's unused dialogue. It's basically voice clips of Sonic trying to keep it together despite the cyber corruption affecting him.
Apparently, the cyber corruption was gonna make him forget bits of his memory(?) That definitely sounds like something that would have happened in an alternate version of the story.
I mean, have you ever stopped to think why the Memory Tokens are called "Memory Tokens"?
@@eduardoaugusto9206 exactly
@Eduardo Augusto I can't confirm for every voice clip, but I have a video capture on my Switch of Sonic saying one of them. If they kept one, I'm assuming they kept the rest.
Despite all these tower climbing segments, the gradual crumbs of backstory provided afterwards will hopefully make completing each one worth it in the end.
That's interesting, because in one of the cutscenes, someone destroyed a planet with a laser. It might be among Sage and the Titans.
Love the part where Knight just swings Sonic along the blade into the wall when he catches the swing. Shows the machine actually has some tactics to it.
The towers have checkpoints, if you fall they give ways to get you back up without resetting, most of the time is a thing you grab and it brings you back up.
So, it's likely this ancient enemy is the voice sealed in cyberspace, which means the classic 2-step plan:
1) Get tricked into releasing the ancient evil
2) Kill or re-seal the ancient evil.
Find Your Flame, and that whole Knight fight in general, is the coolest moment in the franchise
Alright let me be calm about this.
I HAVE PUT OTHER LET'S PLAYS OFF FOR LONG ENOUGH 'CAUSE I WANTED TO SEE THIS WITH FRESH EYES. FINALLY TIME
if you saw the Knucles animation that show how knucles reached the island you get a lot more connections, also Chaos was a Chao that was mutated by the energy of the Master Esmerald, and because the ancients and chaos look so similar it makes sense that if the master Esmerald could turn a Chao into Chaos the reverse could have happen and it makes sense because the chao come from angel island
They don’t live in different worlds. That stuff is only in Sonic X. The animal people live on smaller islands while the humans live on the larger continents.
So, there is no separate dimensions and earths between games. No Mobius. It's been confirmed that all of the games take place in the same world, same planet. Adventure 2 and Unleashed and such weren't in other worlds, there's just a big societal divide between Mobians and Humans because they avoided each other at all costs until Sonic started to bridge the gap.
There is technically a spectate dimension, the sol dimension where blaze and marine reside.
And if you really stretch it out, the lost hex May technically be a separate earth?
This game does such an amazing job at making the Titans feel like impossibly powerful behemoths, and then making you feel like the ultimate badass when you gain the power to fight them.
Rhea island is the northern half of Kronos island. Im 90% sure it was made this way due to time/budget constraints.
At 12:00 I think Ian is mixing up the plots of sonic adventure 1 and 2 with the Sonic X cartoon.
Sonic X was an anime not a cartoon bruh.
I love the rock scene music for the super sections. It's so fun, and a genre used very often anymore.
Is this the most vulnerable we've ever seen Sonic be?
Like, sure, we've seen him lose and be beaten a few times, get played for the fool a couple others, and even seen him just flat out die once before, but I think this might be the first time we've seen the blue blur get so... Clobbered, and by his own dogged determination, no less.
Regardless, I think this is definitely the most self destructive Sonic we've seen. Man may as well be slowly killing himself to get the job done.
That's the Sonic we know, baby. He will put himself in harm's way if it means that he will save his friends and everyone.
@@eduardoaugusto9206 Who knew Sonic was secretly Shirou Emiya
You guys were luckily in-sync with the music during the boss fight. It was HYPE!
Find Your Flame is VERY close to being my favorite Sonic song.
6:10 in the back of my head
**RULES OF NATURE**
“Yes! Yes! Split it wide open!”
Your fears of this game were pretty founded, no one was expecting this game to be good and everyone was surprised when it was just solid all the way through
Well, before we knew anything about Frontiers, Forces was the last mainline game released and I don't even need to repeat what happens with that game. Despite us getting many side projects and spin offs, we were in a 5 year drought when it came to mainline content.
All you need to know is that food tasted different. And after the gameplay reveals that were shown on IGN's channel... Yeah, they had a lot of trust that they had to earn back.
Lucky for them, that's exactly what happened!
Best song in the game this episode.
Also, if the Ancients went super, would that look like Perfect Chaos?
My guess is no. One of the Egg Memos mentioned that the Chaos we know was affected by some kind of radiation for eons. So the Ancients could have looked different. Also, the whole thing about Chaos using the negative energy of the Emeralds could be a thing as well.
@@TronicSpeed Maybe, but what if that "Radiation" is actually the chaos emerald energy, which would mean a concentrated amount of that energy could make them transform into something like Chaos, theoretically. Maybe not EXACTLY like Chaos, maybe something more like a less terrifying sea serpent made of water, like a giant water Dragonite.
Perfect Chaos used the Negative Energy of the emeralds.
Super forms requires Positive Energy.
Again, this game has some top-notch spectacle bosses and knows how to use qtes properly. Also awesome music.
Well, I was expecting a formula change. I wasn't expecting things to rush towards a conclusion quite THIS fast.
Boy, just wait. You ain't seen nothing yet.
2:40 music timed perfectly for riding the Titan's razor shield
Holy shit that boss fight was amazing! I knew it was going to be good but the way you played it was fantastic. Absolute HYPE!
Well, being behind on a series is a double edged sword. Glad I finally caught up!
Fun fact: this is unfortunately where they started cutting ideas because of time and laxk of resources, Rhea island was gonna be more like the others in terms of the amount of content it had. People are hoping that because of the monumental success of Sonic's franchise this year SEGA will give them more of those for the next project, they stubled a lot here trying to make the best possible comeback after forces and they did rly good, so lets hope they can continue with maybe more support from sega
OH AND ALSO the "Two Worlds" thing is just 100% bogus, it was said a long time ago when they didnt think that keeping sonic's lore in-tact was all that important (when, in fact, a lot of people still wanted old lore to be aknowledged and not just ignored). With the effort to unify the lore again Two Worlds was one of the things they debunked, in an official youtube videi they just state that animal people and humans are just on opposite ends of the planet and thats that
personally, im glad
Sega has actually confirmed Sonic lives on Earth. Mobius doesn’t really exist in the game canon (at least I don’t think so). So the ancients traveled from their planet to Earth, where Angel Island and the Master Emerald was somehow.
I love your sonic gameplays. I've been sick with a headcold, and this has been cheering me up, thank you!❤
GOSH I've been on the edge of my seat the moment you entered Rhea Island and began climbing the towers. The soundtrack setting the ambience, and the lower ground becoming distant as you went through the pathways set with a high chance of slipping and losing a lot of your progress made me incredibly tense but excited.
Also, is it me or did the soundtrack itself and Sonic's situation made me remember a lil' of Ori??
12:00 I'm actually surprised that it happened. To be fair, the ramp was the first time you saw.
So, the flashbacks you've seen up to this point, in a nutshell:
Thing attacked Ancient's planet
Ancient's are aliens, and escaped, got a little too close to Sonic's world, where the master emerald affected the chaos emeralds, now know to be of alien origin.
(How Sonic's world already had a master emerald so specifically tuned to the chaos emeralds is left unexplaied.)
Whatever happened after the last flashback shown in this episode, the remaining Ancients eventually kinda, "evolved" into Chao.
Chaos is a mutated Chao, taking on an appearance of his species original form.
Chaos is an Ancient.
Also, something that just crossed my mind:
Perfect Chaos' form might have been based on the Titans, through the power of some combination of Chaos' DNA and potentially long locked away genetic memories or some whatever.
Poor Chaos, if only he could connect to the Cyberspace on these islands somehow...
Aaaaaccctually that might just make him vengeful again...but it would be nice if Tikal or whoever could explain his origins to him in a non vengence inducing way.
I'm still so sad you guys never got to see any of the Titan cyloop scenes. RIP.
Hopefully when the boss rush (?) update comes out maybe they can try it !
It's my birthday today and seeing you again on yours videos is a president in itself
For what it's worth, when you guys ran past the first tower it really did seem like the right thing to do, I don't think I'd've done any different
We found our flame it seems. Glad this game won you over. Hope you try some other Sonic games too. Fun to watch you two theorize.
Wyvern may be my favorite boss and have my favorite track but my god the Knight has the best finish to the fight lol
5:32 Right as he punches him i got an ad for Sonic Superstars XD
Rhea Island is just the other half of Kronos Island that you couldn't explore before. One of the six towers marks where you fought Giganto.
Dude, did you see how the counter move is him knocking on Knight's legs to knock him off balance? That was so clever!
My guy, I am DEAD serious, even after these two months of the game being available to the public, I still don't think it's been PROPERLY QUANTIFIED how much heavy lifting these Titan fights have done to the game's reputation and reception. Chaos Island may be a pain but I believe it has the best Titan fight in the game.
Regardless, we move on to Rhea Island and- wait, how did he lose the emeralds this time? Was he shot by lasers on his way here? That can't be because something like that would have shown up as a cutscene. Why wouldn't it appear otherwise?
Besides... aren't we coming back to familiar ground? (Sorry, too soon?) If you look at the minimap for Kronos and Rhea, they are LITERALLY the same! You can even see the same structures for Kronos Island in this Rhea section. In fact, that giant circular arena looking place that you go to at 26:40? That's the arena where you fought Giganto!
Yeah, in case you couldn't tell... this is just Kronos Island Part 2. The Rhea section and Kronos sections of this map are just awkwardly blocked off by an invisible wall. I can only imagine what was originally planned for this section of the Kronos Island map. Not only because there is literally nothing to do here other than to climb those towers, but also because if you snoop around for a bit, you will see that there are smaller towers, building and platforms around that just lead to nothing.
That being said, you are technically going through new terrain thanks to the fact that you did not explore this section of the map before. Not only that, but for what it's worth, I think these towers have some of the best 2D sections in the game. The challenges that they give with these mish mash between 2D and 3D sections are all very good!
Next time you do any of the Titian fights, try using quick cyloop when you have the meter full, some really cool stuff you’re missing out on for the bosses
Sadly, there is no way to refight the Titans in this games. The only way for Ian to see the Cyloop animation is if he checks them out on CZcams or if he boots up a new save file to get back to that fight. I can't say for certain that he is willing to do either of those things.
5:32 the fact that the song was almost perfect synced.
THE SONG I LOVE SO DAM MUCH
yeah remember how hollow knight randomly became a platformer out of no were for no reason sometimes... same vibe with this island in my opinion.
17:20 Love this game's jank.
May I ask, what is your most popular 1st episode in a series? I remember those always getting more views then the later episodes, so what has the most?
There's two answers to this, because the MOST viewed of all time are very old Sims console videos (Sims Bustin Out, Sims 1, then The Urbz). However, currently what gets the most views for our channel is Hollow Knight and Undertale Chapter 2. It's interesting how time can morph a channel's direction!

Seeing Ian fall off the towers was really painful. More painful considering it happened multiple times.

There home wasn’t cyberspace. They had their own planet and they came to earth after their home was destroyed.
I wonder who destroyed the Ancient's home? Maybe Sage or the Titans.

HOLY SHIT this game is amazing!!!
Getting some lore mixed up. Mobius was never a thing in the games continuity, that was something made up in the comics and western cartoon. In the games it's always just been Earth.
sonic not even having the energy for quips... man...
You think that? I don't think that what's happening even though it is possible. I interpreted this scene as a way to fully grasp Sonic's character. If you Sonic's character and his personality, then you know why he keeps smiling through the pain.
@@eduardoaugusto9206 Usually sonic will even make quips when he's by himself. and right now, in front of someone who until recently was his enemy, he can only stagger forward. I'm not denying his cheerful personality and determination, but it really shows how much pain he's in that he can't even manage a snarky comeback.

THE L O R E
No way they ended before finishing the last 2 towers like ik yall just wanna milk the game but damn
I always try to make cuts that make sense, and the way I saw it we'd making this part over an hour IF there were a boss after the final tower. Normally, I wouldn't mind that TOO much if it felt natural, like this, but we're still struggling to keep up with the schedule we have after our move. Hopefully this kinda thing can happen less in the future, but I hate the idea of milking games, cause I'd rather just focus on making the best of what we have, rather than stretching it unnecessarily.
Finished
oh no??????? i am afraid????????
Okay did the Platinum gaming team make the boss fights for this game? Because this is at their level of extra. Like every single one of these boss fights makes me think of metal gear revengeance
Nope, it is surprisingly made by Sonic Team themselves, which is kind of a miracle and a redemption arc for them, because usually Sonic boss fights are very hit or miss(mostly miss). Sonic Forces as a example was just depressing.....But these genuinely are the best ones in the franchise.
It's not that they are hit or miss. It's more that they don't have the same level of spectacle and epicness as this. I mean, come on, how often do you get a scenario where every main boss fight is a Super Sonic fight? They gotta pump up the hype because Super Sonic scenarios are just epic like that!
However, I believe that everyone can agree that Frontiers has, at the very least, set a new standard for how future games should handle their presentations in Super Sonic scenarios.
Knight is still cool but after fighting him more, its not my favorite titan anymore, its 2nd to wyvern for me
