9 weeks at number 1 in 1975, here in the UK. It also reached number 1 in 1991, when our darling Freddie died, and again number 1 with the release of the Bohemian Rhapsody film release. Over 1 billion views of this iconic video. No one can better Freddie and Queen. He is beyond iconic, calling him a genius or legend doesn’t even scratch the surface tbh.

That was back in 1974. Fell in love with them. I am going to give you a song that the lead singer FREDDIE MERCURY killed with his vocals. It's live at the Wembley concert July 12th 1986. It's called WHO WANTS TO LIVE FOREVER. You will absolutely love it. Welcome to the journey of QUEEN'S greatness, You will learn that they have NO bad songs. When Queen went into their 4th album "A night at the opera" in 1975, they were still in debt and not making much money or selling a lot of records... but Freddie Mercury was energized w/ grand ideas. He started w/ the piano piece for 'Bohemian rhapsody' but then added more parts to the song... In the studio, he laid down the parts and directed the rest of Queen to put their parts down, then proceeded w/ layers upon layers of vocal tracks and kept adding more parts... the tapes started to wear out while recording, so they had to copy their work on new tape.
In the end, 'Bohemian rhapsody' had about 180 overdubs, clocked in at near 6 minutes, and the entire album 'A night at the opera' was one of the most expensive records to date... Queen pushed the for the single on radio, and it finally hit #1 and the album exploded in popularity worldwide. By 1976, Queen was headlining arenas on tour and all 4 Queen albums were in the charts.

I listen to this song nearly every day and have since it dropped somewhere around 1975. I never get tired of it, the writing and arranging is still mind boggling to me. You should react to Queen: White Queen live at Odeon, Hammersmith for a really amazing listen to Freddie's vocal control and also to an instrumental portion of the song that is absolute perfection by Freddie and Brian that goes on for a minute and forty-five seconds. The entire band is perfection on that song which is why it is my favorite live performance by any band ever. Thank you for reacting to this iconic song. Bohemian Rhapsody will live on and on.

They are riding a great band's coattails to get a hit. They have very good voices but no feeling for the song. Smiling while tragic lyrics are sung. Ugh!

Got to read between the lines. Freddie didn't literally kill a man, he killed his own prior heterosexual persona, and decided to branch out into bisexual. He himself said the song is about relationships; yes, his own relationships, and the operatic section deals with his fears of being judged for this. Also, Bohemian Rhapsody is not so much a song as it is a miniature vocal suite. Read the Wikipedia article for the references in the operatic section (sounds closer to Gilbert and Sullivan than it does to grand opera); Bismillah: first word of the Quran, "as Allah wills;" that is, "in the name of God." Scaramouche; stock clown character of the 16th-century Commedia dell'arte. Fandango? A dance. Beelzebub is an old name for the Satan, the devil. It means "lord of the flies." Galileo, Figaro? Look them up. Freddie Mercury was obviously well-read. Bohemian means a person, usually an artist of some sort; poet, composer, writer, painter, who lives unconventionally. Eccentric...A Rhapsody is a classical music composition in free form.

When someone cuts off the ending, and starts talking, it tells me they don't really appreciate what they're listening to.

First time I heard this I was 12, I had never heard anything like it, my friend bought the record and I couldn't believe how off-the-wall it was compared to what was out there at the time. We had many great artists but only Bowie was as inventive.

Great reaction, thanks! Queen had several iconic must see videos, this being one of them but it is their live performances that really set them apart from the rest. Try Under Pressure live at Wembley 1986 or for hard rock, try Stone Cold Crazy live at the Rainbow 1974. Queen does nearly every genre...they can do it all!
