How to do a Cold Weather Track Inspection on the Cumberland Mine Railroad

  • Cold weather track inspections are vital and I will show you what all
    the things we look for in the track during the cold winter months on
    the Cumberland Mine Railroad. Cold weather can be very hard on track,
    specially when we have a freeze thaw cycle. Plus with the heavy weight
    of the train going over the track, things have a tendency to break more
    often in the colder months. So I try to do at least a twice weekly track inspection.

    It's a blessing to have a job that has you excited to be there. Track was sounding pretty good. I'm glad that Iron Senergy is putting in the time and money to slowly rehabilitate it from the poorer state that it was in from the old company's lack of investment. Thanks for another great video, Dave!

      Thank you Shane for the nice comment. Yes it certainly is a very
      good thing they are spending money on the track, the railroad is
      the life blood of the mine, without it we couldn't transport very much
      coal at all. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend.

    when you are a positive individual, and your profession is something you love to do! it is never
    “work! “ it like I have always said, “you are only able to do your best in your position “ but
    your attitude can have a positive impact upon others to do the same! if you do 100%
    you keep your area so safe! by doing that someone will go home in the same condition that
    they arrived ! there are so many hazards dealing with any railroad ! thanks for the explanation
    about the rail inspection, it is key to minimize joint gaps, or damaged bolts! you do not want
    the joints to break apart with an engine passing over it! great job ,you keep me smiling!

    When i was in the mines the company shut down for two week between Christmas and new years. Although there wasn't any miners working, everything still had to be preshifted every 8 hours. I lived about a mile from the mine so I'd volunteer as many preshifting trips i could. Its was around a 3 hour trip from porthole to porthole and i got paid double time and a half for 8 hours for each run!

    • @ccrx6700
      @ccrx6700  Před 8 měsíci

      Whenever they shut down here the mine still has to be fire bosses
      Jughead. I believe that is federal law. But you have to have fire boss
      papers to do an inspection of the mine. They are planning on
      taking one of their vacation periods next year here Christmas week,
      the other week will be at Thanksgiving. Double time and a half
      is good money, good for you! Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold weather track inspection my friend.

    Wishing you and yours a merry and safe Christmas Dave!
    Personally, I'm 55 years old and, my wife is 54 and, we've both missed a lot of family time due to our careers. I'm an owner operator truck driver, my wife is a nurse practitioner at a trauma center.
    With all that said, this holiday season will be the last that we miss. I'll be leaving early tomorrow morning for an "out and back" run and she's already at work (she'll be working 12hr + shifts through next Friday). I'll leave again Christmas afternoon and be home early next Saturday morning. We both still love our jobs but, our grandchildren aren't getting any younger and we don't want to miss any more that what we already have.
    Our "official" retirement day will be next Sunday (New Years Eve) and, weather permitting, the kids and grands will all be coming home to help us celebrate it! 2 weeks after that, my 2006 Freightliner Classic XL will be headed off for a motorhome conversion.
    With 600 horses under my right foot and 13 gears under my right hand, it should still be a fun ride going to visit family and friends! I'll definitely keep my eyes peeled for you at rail crossings in Pennsylvania as well as watching every video that you post!

    What a glorious day to be out working! I wish all my employees were as mentally engaged as you are. I have always said that positivity breeds positivity, but is much more work to create and maintain. Being negative about your employer is much easier and sadly, more fun for some folks. The grass is generally not greener on the other side, just a different type of grass. It means alot to an employer to hear positive comments-they need encouragement as much as employees do! I'm so happy to hear that you have that employer support and they are dedicated to listening, creating a better and more stable work place as well as keeping a vision for the future. 😊

    One has to keep their diligence on that track inspection lest and you have both your list of things to look for and then in your mind what to listen for or just doesn't seem right. Of course after years of looking at certain sections you'll easily remember where things are prone to going wrong. Thanks much for showing the truck being loaded and in the mining industry they are large but compared to some of the huge open pit mines they're tiny. A blessed Christmas to you and your family and all your little Junior track inspectors viewing this in the comfort of a warm home

    Lots of interesting chat on this one Dave Yes a lot of things to look and listen out for. Odd how some places have pull aparts more often, I guess the sun plays a part in that locally heating an area or that area being more shady causing uneven expansion and contraction. A good day with only a few bolts to replace.

    • @ccrx6700
      @ccrx6700  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Thank you Cedarcam for the very kind words. It is interesting from
      your comment that we have places the very seldom get any sun
      during the winter, yet never have joint pull aparts there. Then there
      are other places like west of the tunnel that don't get much sun,
      yet have more pull aparts than other areas. Track is strange and
      I'm still learning about all it's unusual quirks and behaviors. Very much appreciate your riding track with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend.

    Merry Christmas to you and your family, Dave. I used to drive tanker and hauled a couple loads of out-of-spec antifreeze to a coal plant in rural eastern Kentucky. I inquired about it, and they said it was a cold weather release agent for the washed coal in the cars. Go figure.

    • @ccrx6700
      @ccrx6700  Před 8 měsíci

      Thank you David. I would say the side release agent they use here is
      a glycol base with some additives in it. Interesting you also hauled
      some of that similar stuff. It's pretty slimy. Wet coal in aluminum
      cars has a real tendency to freeze to the sides and also the bottom

    Yes, Dave. I did enjoy today's episode. I was wondering about the release agent. It seems that graphite would cause too much loss of tractive effort. We use a spray liquid for concrete, but that might hinder the use of coal.

      Thank you Jon, glad you enjoyed. LB Foster makes a special lubricant to spray the tops of the rails with that is a graphite base, then mix
      it with water, however you are right, too much graphite and the
      loco would just sit there and spin and never be able to stop either. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me and helping with the track inspection my friend.

    You got 12 years on me. I certainly for some unknown reason like work more in my older age than when I was younger. My grandfather worked until he literally couldn't anymore well into his 70s. My dad was no different. Dementia got him in the end but even that didn't stop him until within a year before he died. He passed Dec 15 2020. I hate twiddling my thumbs. I have to have something to do. Interesting about the tracks. Too bad there isn't a way to keep the tracks warm using geothermal of some sort. Heck, some day in the future we might have hover trains and tracks wont be needed anymore. LOL. Merry Christmas and stay safe. 🎄🎄🎄🎄🎅🎅🎅🎅🎅

    I do love that enthusiasm you have and pride in your work that you exhibit! I take it that welded track is less likely to break? For those rails, does excessive heat or cold still bother them?
    Thanks for taking us along! Loved the truck loading at the end!

    • @ccrx6700
      @ccrx6700  Před 8 měsíci

      Thank you for the nice comment Trena. Welded rail doesn't have the
      joints, joints are very hard to keep up to track surface, they want to
      keep dropping, they were the weak link in the chain. Welded rail
      holds up much better for track surface. How much the heat and cold affects welded rail depends on the amount of rail anchors they have
      in place and that are holding. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me and helping with the track inspection my friend.

    Years ago, on the old IC Peoria district, it used to be jointed track. The MoW would use a track vehicle that would come through and loosen and then tighten the bolts on the joints. Very loud and hydraulic of course. The only time I ever saw such a machine. They had problems with some of them and would have to replace them as well. Of course, the jointed rail is long gone, and I would asume the same with the machine. Good video Dave.

    It was a great ride, Dave. Mini"you" has track#1 done on the layout. Speed restrictions off.2 GP38's and an Alco RS18 are pounding on it. Hopefully, I can take some time and post it. Merry Christmas, Dave&family. Your friend 150 nautical miles away on the north shore of Erie.🚂🇨🇦🇺🇲👷‍♂️⛏️🙋

      Glad you enjoyed Doug. Sounds like you had a good MOW crew
      on that job. GP's which have 2 axles are much easier on track than the SD models with 3 axles are. Will look forward to watching that
      video. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold weather track inspection my friend.

      make a big difference in track. Eyes and ears are simple things, but
      they are vital to track inspections and finding things that will
      prevent possible derailments. Very much appreciate your riding track with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend.

      Thank you Alaskarailroad. Track inspections are pretty important to find things hopefully before they turn into major repair jobs or worse
      derailments. I would imagine on the Alaskan RR inspections are done
      a lot more often than here. They could probably teach me something
      about cold weather and track! Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me and helping do a track inspection my friend.
