Looks like I need to anticipate head winds and inclines and not expect the indicated range to be accurate. Weight must make a significant difference along with head winds and inclines.
The Haibike Trekking six is the same bike Charlotte is riding but mine is configured differently. It comes in three cross bar or step thru styles and can be configured in more sporty configurations or as in my case a more upright position for comfort and better visibility.
The gears, battery and display are the same on all configurations.
Incredibly, there are many Trekking bikes in the range all with different motors and batteries so there's a bike for everyone.
Smilebikes is a gem of business, a genuine family business that cares.

Good effort for first time out. Anything that gets people out on bikes (normal or electric) is a win.
True that 👌
You bought a very good brand of ebike , as I can testify to.
For max range keeping the assisted speed to 10/11mph and mid to low assistance level helps eek it out. Slower speed allows you to enjoy the ride more.
Saddle soreness resolves quickly but you have to persevere with it. Frequent shorter rides to start with helps toughen things up without pushing the pain barrier to much. It's too easy to go out and do 20 miles and not get back on for a week or two due to the pain otherwise!
Good advice thanks, problem is the bikes so quick in std and high modes you soon get to 16mph. Hopefully I'll adjust and have fun discovering what suits me best. Looking forward to more rides as soon as the wind dies down
You can also get padded bike shorts. I used these on a John o'Groats to Lands End (non electric) ride many years ago.
Then they should add a gear for down hills
And what about anti matter
Store up the air in compressed cylinders when braking and using this power a wind mill to constantly generated electricity
When riding rural roads you'll quickly learn that hedge cutting = thorns on the road = punctures.
Both punctures I've had on my eBike in over 1000+ miles of riding have been shortly after passing a tractor which has been flailing a hedge back.
...Slow right down and scan the road in front like a hawk for thorns when going through an area with recently cut hedges.
---
Can't believe they didn't even bother to charge the bike up for you knowing you'd be riding it home.
I've learnt the hard way it seems
Yes a few more % would've been nice but to be fair I think they expected me to cancel for the rain so not charged over night and I was busy having it configured. I Could've had another coffee and charged another hour but I chose to set off immediately... Without my helmet 🤦♂️
like the off to the pub bit
Good on you. Nice to hear a novices early experience with electric bike touring.
If you put it in Eco or the setting for low power and a gear where you find it easy to pedal (prob mid range) at a cadence of around 80 a min probably you will be doing about 10 to 12 mph. The eco uses less power coupled with a 80 cadence which puts less strain on the motor. At the moderate speed on a sunny day no wind and just the odd slope where you use higher power for a bit a whole battery will get you 120 miles. If you go for some hills and flat mixed your get 80 to100. However do not ever use the full battery like that. Charge between 30 to 80% range ie only using half the battery capacity and it will last much more time in years. Of course a now and then 100% charge is ok say every few weeks . You will get more mileage in warm weather less in cold as the battery doesn't like cold. In winter keep the battery indoors . After a ride wait half hour before charging to allow the worked battery to cool first. If your not riding for a few weeks store at 60% charge. The above is based on a pretty unfit guy using the same battery and bike. Above all have fun enjoy try some general off-road as well. The above is to kindly help with your new hobby. Cheers.
I'm testing the various modes on a test route to gauge efficiency a.
Over 7 miles using std over eco used 2% more battery but saved 5 minutes riding time and avg speed picked up from 13 to 16mph, about to try 'high' mode
Range showing 81 miles which is still huge
7 miles is using 10-11 % so far and a recharge is taking 0.1kwh
'Now off to the pub' 🙂 I cyclist after my own heart. So 14 miles on 30%? That should translate to going to the coast and back easily by spring when you and the bike both have an improved range. I'm looking forward to the video already. Keep up the good work.
A well earned pint
Well done Nigel.
At the age of 74 I got a Raleigh ebike on Bosch electrics but a similar style to your bike. I got it as a means building my leg muscle up before I have full knee replacement. You’ll find that rides up to and over 20 miles no problem. At the moment I’m doing between 20 to 25 miles every day and in the near future, a matter of a few days now I’ll get my new knee. Mind I think it was a bit naughty of the seller not having a fully charge bike for your first ride.
I forgave him as he fitted a few extras for free and gave me a cracking deal on a set of panniers
If you use the bike on a regular basis you might find that your battery range can increase. I live in a hilly area and I was using the higher levels of assistance but overtime as my strength and endurance built up I find that I’m using eco mode more and on hills where I was using sport or turbo I’m now using tour. A further plus is over a few months of regular use my weight has reduced from just over 16st to somewhere near 14 and half st. Mind to get that weight loss I’m riding for up to two hours at a time, mind being a retired old fart l’ve got plenty time to do that.
I'm finding similar, eco is plenty most of the time as I'm getting fitter
I've been riding bikes on and off for decades and still have my 90's MTB as a runabout on the flat-ish routes for grocery raids. When I got my present job five years ago, which is a mile away, up a hill straight from my door (shortest commute I've ever had too), I didn't fancy my chances to get there without some assistance. So I got myself an eBike, which helped a lot and the ride home was almost completely downhill, so lots of fun, until we all got sent to WFH in '19 that was :-(. I really aught to take it out for longer rides though, since I live in the middle of the Chilterns, there aren't many routes that could be considered at all flat.
I'm looking forward to Spring and some exploring
Excellent...really enjoyed that vid....i guess on the range they build in a small margin of capacity, sort of when it shows almost discharged there really still is more power than is shown.
Yep and range calculated on a smaller person no doubt. Indicated 24, actual 15 in bad conditions isn't so bad imo. Very happy if real world is 50+ miles
Looking forward to seeing you at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games in the England cycling team ……riding your bike ahead of the field in “ the Keirin “……😂🇬🇧
Nice and flat , in sunny Gower we don’t do flat . Be interesting to know how hills effect range .
Ive considered getting an electric brompton so i can take it with me on holiday (UK) and get around a bit more plus also drive to an area id like to bike around, whereas a larger bike i'm restricted to areas where i live. Plus were i to go into a pub i could fold it up and take it inside rather than leave several thousand £ of easily nickable bike outside.
Ive had an electric bike for years, however my saddle will leave you damaged after 10 miles! I noticed you where furnished with a wide saddle! 😂 lol
Definitely, I want to be comfy
Good effort, you need to either take a spare tube or puncture repair kit, as we all know the lazy farmers or contractors can't be bothered to clean their mess up when battering headges. What happened to headge laying.
Enjoy your weekend
Interesting video, especially as I’m hoping to retire this year. Food for thought. Although I’m not sure I can forgive you now I’ve got Chris De Burgh’s ‘Who pays the ferryman?’ running around in my head😄
Nice one 👍,I got an ebike a year ago and now use it more than the car
I am wondering whether it'll cause us to drop to one car not two🤔
@@EVPuzzle hope you get lots of use from it , mine has a 500 wh battery and I can easily do 60 miles no problem
Wow, so, 20 percent + more 50 miles.. Awesome
@@EVPuzzle if you get chance you will have to do a video of how far you can get in all the modes eco, turbo, etc
I'm not fit enough to try ECO mode for long. Hopefully I'll improve.
Might try my EV eco route in the 3 modes though and measure power used
Done that, got the T shirt but failed. I thought the same as you did, need the exercise get an ebike bought one on ebay could not ride it, all wrong first lesson go to an ebike shop try out various models get the right bike that fits you. Get the right saddle that fits you The ebike vender man knows what will fit you. Got the bike, off I went proud as Larry till I had to stop at a road junction. Put my foot down to steady myself. No foot fell over bang! Got on what happened? never mind back on off I went, stopped again Bang! fell over. First time not watching what I am doing, second time coincidence. Back on of we go again stopped again Bang! Third time is plain stupidity. Walked home pushing the bike. Next day went to the doctors who sent me off to Hospital, Loads of tests. Found a trapped nerve in my knee which is why when I put my feet on the floor after pedaling feels as I have no legs or leg which is why I fall over. Doctors advice Sell the ebike but keep the T shirt.
My first ride was slightly better then. Sorry to hear you ended up in hospital but I guess you know now
Great video. I’m local with the same online e-bike nightmare you had. How are you getting along with the bike? Was great to discover the bike shop. It’s so close but I’d not found it online until your video. So thanks !
That's brilliant news. The haibike is brilliant but our duff Swift elife bike is still dead, will be sold for parts, battery is fine and physical bike is fine just doesn't give electric assist and csnt resolve it. If only we had gone this route to start with from smile bikes
Say hi from me to Tim Jane and Shelly if you pop in
Very disappointed you never had a cycle helmet on remember safty at all times ❤
I hadn't read about your channel before I typed that last long comment I just thought you weren't someone buying a Haibike. You obviously know about battery's but hopefully there's something to help .
Bought two now, one for our daughter and one for me. Enjoying it
Glad you've found the channel👍
That's great when you have done some miles and evaluated the mileage possibility against settings. I'm sure others would be interested in the figures. I am going to try loading my panniers to take the load for the bike to it's max 130kg that's inclusive of bike rider and pannier load. I shall do the same routes I have done to compare with my previous results. If I go touring this is essential before I plan a route.
Right now I can't imagine cycling further than the bikes range, even in high mode. Who knows though maybe I'll get fit one day 😂
Hi I put a couple of comments on your channel 1yr ago. I haven't been to well but hope to get out in June. I wondered how your getting on now what trips you've done?.
Hedge cutting and bike tyres normally equal puncher
I,m going on an electric diet to go with my electric bike ..a conveyor belt brings me food ….wot you think ? Your part way there
An ebike will make you healthier and happier.
Let’s talk about regulations
I'm guessing this has already been mentioned, but I'm surprised they let you out without a helmet, Have some respect for your head.
Next you'll want me to wear knee pads. I wear a helmet when I'm mixing with traffic more
Some mucky roads up there across the border in Norfolk. If you are looking to get fit then the best way to use an e-bike is to use the lowest assistance mode you can manage. Save the higher levels for going up the hills. Making good use of the gears is also a good idea as a lot of people don't and rely on the electric motor (a bit like driving a car in town in 5th or 6th). Have only just found your channel, so off for browse. I made a video about my ebike and the accessories I've added czcams.com/video/laYQLCa_yTw/video.html
Great video, very inspiring … but … if you do nothing else Nigel please please buy a helmet. Without one (as a regular cyclist) I wouldn’t be writing this now (they don’t cost much!). Show my comment to Susan … you’ll have bought one by the weekend!
I have one, never worn one before, don't really want to but helps with visibility too
Are tyers on bike puncture proof
Puncture resistant not proof, no solid. They're moped tyres weakly
Hi mate I’ve just put my haibike 7 trekking on eBay for half its original price only did 300 miles on it since new if you know anyone who wants it let me know it’s in great condition with some nice upgrades I did ;)
Will do, the 7 is a nice spec
You will be able to make Jeremy Vine type videos of questionable motorist encounters and post them on Twitter / CZcams.
God I hate that bloke and hates a strong word. What he dies and stands for is the worst of society these days. Feeding and spreading negativity for profit
@@EVPuzzle 100% this, he does create situations and antagonises people. He has a very biased viewpoint.
I would be annoyed if I purchased a bike and they couldn’t be bothered to fully charge it for you.
I forgive them, they don't activate the battery until day of pickup an do was happier having my extras fitted and configured for free
I did it the other way around, two ebikes persuaded me to get an EV
If you did a average speed of 24 mph you never got any electric assistance
Bit poor wasn’t fully charged
It was to be honest, should've been charged to 50% min knowing I had a long cycle back, Instead I had just enough so grateful it was well judged perhaps
@@EVPuzzle glad you got back mate ..range anxiety is a b1tch lol ... just gonna order one of these bikes this afternoon been saving up
Quality product
i built my own because £2500 can not put a smile on my face im afraid
16 miles for first long ride was far too long, you could’ve done yourself a injury 😢
But shows the ability of the bike. It was on the edge of what I was happy to try for sure, so definitely needed the 3 mile shorter route
@@EVPuzzle At least it’s flat ground where you are, have you got a helmet ⛑ yet
All sorted but doesn't feel comfortable, I've never worn one
