  • I saved hundreds of dollars a year by having the propane gas company remove the 100 gallon LP tank from my homes gas fireplace.
    I hook up a small 5 gallon propane tank and fill it up at half the cost. No more tank rental, deliveries, hazardous surcharge and recovery fees.
    Used a gas grill hose with a regulator and male to male 3/8 inch fittings
    3/8 Inch Male Flare x 3/8 Inch Male Flare Propane Connector Gas Adapter

    Well well well, after having my gas fireplace off for 2 plus years finally I got it working again after seeing this video. Gas company wanted to charge me way too much because I did not met the minimum usage required, plus $250 installation fee plus rental fee, plus delivery fee and only God knows what else. Thanks Dan.

      Hi Patty, You summed up exactly why I made the video. I feel so good know that it helped you out. I have loved how mine worked out. I just get the couple tanks I use filled up whenever I want and have the gas fireplace whenever I need it. Only change I would make to it is to not use the regulator hose. I think it reduced the strength of the pilot light. It just needs a hose and the adapter then I would not have had to adjust the placement of the flame sensor. Thanks for your comment. It made my day.

    Loved this video!!! Might I suggest a propane leak detector for monthly hose checks. Also, a "smoke detector style" propane detector that is on 24-7. Sleep better at night. I just saw a home on news that exploded massively. Just a thought. But I love the idea of supplying propane ourselves!!

    I just had my 100 pound tank filled yesterday for all of $85 total at Art Pancakes. That works out to $3.10/gallon. Last month I paid $117 to fill the same tank at TSC. I own my tank.

      I would say you are doing it right. That is much better than having a contract to deliver at over $5 a gallon and having to pay surcharge if you do not purchase the minimum amount. You also get to shop around for the best price. Way to go!

      I did move to a 50 lb tank that is just small enough to still load on truck and take to the local propane dealer. Much cheaper than big company or delivery. The smaller tanks work fine too and they are easier to transport as well as can be used for outdoor heater, BBG Grill, Camper etc..... Gives more options keeping it smaller. Thanks for commenting.

    Thanks! I have been meaning to do this for about a year. First thing we do whenever we move into a new house is to boot the rediculous propane tank rental. I wondered about the mechanics of connecting the 20lb tank, but it's simpler than I thought. This is great!

    The reason you notice a weaker flame is the bigger tanks have more pressure. While it will technically work with the way you have it setup now, it isn’t intended to run on that small tank and poses safety risks doing so. Also, regulators are specific to what size tank you use so keep that in mind also. I work for a fuel and propane company and things like this make us so nervous. You should see the things people hook up to grill tanks. This is one of many ways people have house explosions. Minimum I would run on that is a 123 pig with appropriate regulator. You could possible get by with a 100 pound tank but without knowing the btu on that particular fireplace and your average winter temperature I couldn’t be for sure.

      Thanks for posting this. Very helpful information and good caution to be aware of. I plan to run two hook up my 50lb tank as soon as I get it tested and filled. This worked for now and I shut tank valve off after each use.

      Actually the regulator should have been an adjustable regulator.
      The smaller tanks have 80-90 psi.
      About the same as larger tanks. That regulator is 8-10 psi. Should be 12-14 psi.

    I agree. We have a 500 gal tank for our shop (business) and when we started we were paying $0.99/year to rent the tank and $2.38 gal to refill it. That company got bought out and now we pay $89/year to rent the tank and we pay $3.79/gal to refill it. When I asked what it cost to refill the little tanks if we brought them in, I was told $2.75/gal. But it gets worse. The $3.79/gal we paid was with a discount code and because it's for the shop (business) we get a discount there as well. But a normal "residential refill" was $5/gal! So we are paying at least $1/gal for the convenience of not having to swap out those little tanks all the time. And this was the lowest I could find by a long shot. Most of the places I called wanted min. $4.50/gal and $200+ tank rental. Okay so your solution one possible solution, but there is another option, but it's harder to achieve. There are places in the country were people get together and great a "buyers group." Basically you get everyone together in your area and you combine your buying power. So instead of filling a 500 gal tank (400 gals) you get 20 people and now you are buying 8000 gal. The problem is that you have to own your own tank. You can't rent the tank from A and buy gas from B. Now if the laws were changed them maybe you could but for now that's the way it is. I did some searching and the cheapest 500 gal tank I could find was $2500 plus delivery. However if you can negotiate $2/gal difference that will pay itself off in 5 years. The biggest problem is getting everyone to agree to give back their rented tank and buy a new tank. Every year I say I'm going to start a buyers group but never do. But with the prices now.. clearly it's time. Also if we get 20 people being tanks maybe we can get them cheaper. If anyone works at a propane place it would be great if you could dish the dirt on these business! ;-) Thanks for your video.

    Great video and i would save well over $140 on each fill up of my LP TANKS by not having the company fill them. I never signed a rental paperwork with the company. I heat will wood which is a whole lot cheaper. I buy my wood from Amish which they sell hardwood for a fraction of the coast than non Amish. About $175 for wood per year here in Ohio. The 2 100 gallion tanks would be about$358 for about every 3 weeks. Wood is a lot cheaper and sure way to heat

    Propane rental companies are rip offs. You can typically buy a used tank and pay for itself in a year or less by being able to shop around for propane and not being stuck with one supplier. You can tell the companies that are primary rental companies because their propane is much more expensive because their rental customers and shop around for propane. You need exactly 0 inches (0 mm for you metric types) of tape on flare fittings. The threads are not part of the seal and are only required to keep the sealing surfaces in contact.

      Hey Willie, You're not kidding. Every way they can think to charge you, they will. If I needed gas for other appliances as well I think I would go with two 40 lb tanks pushing gas in parallel. Would have all the pressure for multiple gas appliances and still be able to throw tanks in truck and get them filled at a fairly prices refill location. Thanks for commenting.

    Your pilot light was burning yellow on the end, which means it needs to be cleanded . Turn off pilot . Use small pipe cleaner brush , blow out wih compressed air . Turn pilot on check to see if flame is burning blue .repeated untill flame is blue

    I put in a new gas range and oven and run it off of 2 40lb tanks and a 2 stage regulator, works like a dream I got just over a year of use off of a little over 18 gallons of propane. Screw the gas companies they worse than the cable tv folks..,

  • @johnvrbka570
    @johnvrbka570 Před rokem +2

    But you are still paying a lot per gallon of propane. I Recromend buying a used tank like 500 gal since they are most common. Then you won't have to pay for delivery fees if you buy enough per trip. & your not stuck buying from one company . If you buy a used tank be sure the tag is still attached if not don't buy cause they can't legally fill a tank with out a tag. Then you could also fill you 20# bottles off you big tank. That's if you have a liquid fill valve.

      Great advice John. I think the 50 gal tank I found at the end of this video would work too. I get my tanks filled cheap at a local trailer park shop. No delivery. I just run it by when in the area.

    Propane companies are a rip off, not as bad as using cylinder exchange, but it is still a rip off. Fill you 20 pound cylinders or any other as far as that goes, in the winter when it is cold out.

    If you can find out what the pressure was of the large tank before you removed it, you might be able to replicate that with a high-pressure regulator.

  • @wmdouglas3
    @wmdouglas3 Před rokem +1

    When I had my propane company remove my large tank, they told me to get a dual-stage regulator to hook-up to my smaller tank. Not sure if that’s true or not.

    • @DansEverythingOutdoors
      @DansEverythingOutdoors  Před rokem

      I am not sure how that would help but one of the viewers said that the smaller tanks have less pressure so maybe that regulator helps with that.

    • @DansEverythingOutdoors
      @DansEverythingOutdoors  Před 2 lety

      Hi Butchie, I haven't paid attention to how many fires or how long it lasts. I only run the gas fireplace sometimes. I use a wood stove on main level. I also vary the the flame depending on if I am warming up the area or just maintaining temps. It lasted me a couple of months but then again I did not have fireplace running too often.

    DO NOT USE THAT TANK IN THE GARAGE!!! It May Start To Leak In Time.. That's One Of The Older Model Tanks.. Go To LOWES And Get The Latest 100 LB Tanks.. They Work GREAT And Are Easy To Move With A Dolly When Full.. And? Always Keep Your Tank Bottoms OFF OF THE GROUND, And Out Of The Rain And Snow As Much As Possible.. That Way, You'll Prevent Them From Rusting Out.. Especially At The Bottom.. Sit The Tank On Cement Blocks, Or Gravel.. That Way? It Doesn't Develop A Puddle Around The Bottom Of The Tank.. 😮😮 Yep.. Anyway? Good Luck, And Stay Safe..
