Instructions for Travis to ID wires on 2 Speed 3-Phase Motor.
You have 5 wires
Yellow is Common to both High and Low Speeds
2 Black wires for Low
2 Red wires for High
Although you land any color meter leads to wires so long as you stay consistent from Low to High, for simplicity just do as I list below.
- Put the Green Meter Lead to Yellow Motor wire
- Red (M1) Meter Lead to any Red Motor wire then
- Blue (M3) Meter lead to the other Red Motor wire.
Turn Motor CW and if CW LED lights up label the wires Red and Blue or M1 and M3.
Do the same for the Black wires and that way when powered up and running the motor won’t try to reverse direction when changing speeds. Both speeds will be going the same direction even if direction is wrong.
If directions is wrong swap both Red motor wires with each other and swap both Black motor wires with each other.

Phase sequence testing is crucial for many three-phase loads. Improperly connected motors can result in reverse rotation, which can damage the equipment powered by the motor. Ensure electrical equipment is correctly and safely connected with Amprobe’s PRM-4 Phase Sequence and Motor Rotation Tester.

Phase sequence meter (rotation meter) is used for detecting the sequence of the supply in three-phase electric circuits. Since the direction of rotation of three phase electric motors can be changed by changing the phase sequence of the supply. And also the correct operation of measuring instruments like 3 phase energy meter and automatic control of devices also depend on the phase sequence. Different types of phase sequence testers are available in today’s market like contact or non contact, static or rotating, etc., in a wide range of voltage or power ratings. What is phase sequence?
The sequence in which three phase voltages attain their positive maximum values is defined as the phase sequence. It refers to the relation between the voltages or currents in three phase system. Consider the three phases as red-R, yellow-Y and blue-B phases.

So it matters what lead you clamp to which wire...what if the leads from the motor are not marked and you don't know what they are. How would one go about working blind ?
This tool identifies the wires for rotation (CW/CCW, L1/L2/L3, M1/M2/M3).
To understand that you must first understand basic three phase motor rotation. you can land the three motor wires to three incoming wires anyway you like and the motor will turn either clockwise or counterclockwise. To change the direction of rotation you only need to swap two wires. This tool identifies the wires so you know which rotation the motor will turn without the 50-50 guess and trial and error. Often times it doesn’t matter and you can just swap two wires if it’s the wrong direction but there are certain situations where you want to know the direction so that damage is not occur running the wrong direction.

Hey mate, nice video. I'm assuming that you have to test phase sequence of the supply before connecting up to the motor. This is to ensure if the supply is clock wise L1 L2 L3 then connecting L1 L2 L3 to U1 V1 W1 respectively would give you a clockwise rotation? Let me know thanks
Yes, the other side of the meter checks incoming 3 phase power for rotation as CW or CCW. Match the incoming 3ph rotation to Motor rotation and it will turn the rotation expected. You cannot assume the The rotation of the 3ph or motor just because of their labeling which is why this product exist.
In a perfect world connecting as you describe would result in a clockwise rotation but in reality most motors are just a 50-50 crapshoot and often the three phase is not labeled properly.
