Tilt-shift review: Canon TS-E 17mm f4L vs TS-E 24mm f3.5L vs lensbaby

  • This high-quality tilt-shift lens is most interesting for interior and architecture photographers. Interior photography is one of my prior working genres. I'm fascinated by the possibility of obtaining the true medium-format picture using a fullframe body with a tilt-shift lens like this. In order to achieve this effect you have to take 3 pictures using the shift mechanism of a TS-E lens and the blend them into one panoramic photo.
I'll share my thoughts on Canon TS-E 17mm f4L USM in comparison with:
    - Canon TS-E 24mm f3.5L
    - Sigma 12-24mm f4.5-5.6 EX HSM
    - Samyang 12mm f2 crop lens
    - Samyang 8mm f2.8 crop fish-eye lens
    - Lensbaby tilt lens (just for fun)
Shortly speaking if you are deep into interior photography I would highly recommend purchasing this piece of equipment. But in no way this lens is suitable for begginers or for all-round photographers.

I have a 24mm TS and it’s really great. Even if it’s a manual lens, when the focus is OK, you get a beep and a red dot blinking. The only issue: it’s quite expensive but I have got the opportunity to buy it 2 hand.

Это самый офигенный обзор на английском из тех что я слышал. Понятно ВСЁ, дикция правильная, слова угадывать не надо, скорость подачи материала не напоминает пулемёт. Спасибо вам!

Do you find the focus plane manipulation of tilt-shift lenses to be useful for close-up photography? Can we use it instead of closing the aperture down to insanely small values like F22, to avoid crazy diffraction levels (which might not matter for commercial product photography so much)? I'm not interested in miniaturization effect, but in putting things into focus planes that are not parallel to the imaging senor. How effective (convenient or not) would that be?

It doesn't really help at close-ups. You'll have to do focus stacking anyway. Or you use large medium format where you can close the aputure way more.

@@olegasphotoen Totally agree. If you use a TS lens for food photography, it’s fine but don’t expect to use it for macro.
