- Riding Harley Davidson Sportster motorcycles from Calgary Alberta through British Columbia and back. Through rain and sun, bike drops and breakdowns we push on for a multi day road trip on Harley Davidsons Smallest bike.
You can road trip almost any bike if determined enough. I've ridden Sportsters all over the country and I'm a big guy. Building another one to go cruising across the country on right now.
Building from the ground up? Curious what you’re doing. One of my goals is to get an early 2000’s 883 and throw a new 1200 kit and a six speed and make it look more like a 70’s jap standard with a long flat bench seat.
My wife and I have been all over BC on our Sportsters. For less money than a big twin, we bought 2 bikes brand new. They’re reliable. No issues in over 12 years. Get out and ride!
Hell yeah! Nothing wrong with touring on a Sporty. Actually you feel more alive, I really loved those bikes, the only limitation for me was going 2-up regularly. My wife loves to ride so we had to find something she was comfortable on. All that while I had to enjoy the bike for me. Through trials & errors we settled up on a 23 Heritage. This bike has the comfort for my wife, while letting me enjoy riding a motorcycle that’s not sterilized from the elements😎 your bikes look sweet!

After many years of being anti-Harley I bought a Sportster - '05 XL883C. I wanted an air cooled bike with forward controls (bad knees) and Harley was the only one that met that criteria. The Sportster is physically the largest bike I've had although I've had larger engines. I don't need to go fast anymore and I love the fuel mileage I get from the 883. The vibration is a little more than I would like at interstate speeds, but not unbearable and I prefer back roads anyway. I've done one 700 mile trip in a little over 12 hours on it and it was no worse than the Iron Butt rides I've done on Hondas. I've never liked the big heavy bikes - I've always said if I wanted a Gold Wing (or Road King) I'd buy a Miata (which I have - twice). To each his own, but for me I'll never need anything bigger than a Sportster. (And I'm not anti-Harley any more.)
You can tour on anything, just have to adjust accordingly, sure a big heavy bike will give you a smooth ride but a smaller bike is more fun at times

Look up Chris Comly aka Parrothead on the XL Forum. I believe Chris has gone across the U.S. a couple of times on his 2006 sportster. He has a heritage softail as well but says his sporty is more comfortable and he’s a big dude.

My sportster and I have this love affair thing going on. We did our first road trip and now every time I go to the garage, the bags and gear already packed on the bike. I’m like “WTH ?!"

The answer is yes. Its always been yes, it will always be yes. People that say you "can't" just don't want to do it for their own reasons.

I don't know why people think Sportsters aren't long distance bikes. I rode thousands of miles on a 1960 Sportster in the seventies. The only reason I upgraded to a Panhead was most of my riding buddies were riding 74 ci Harleys.

When I was young I used to "tour" / go on trips, on my Honda 175 Twin Scrambler, and then my Honda 350. Ride what you got. It helps to be young.
You should show more of your bikes your riding, especially since your tag line is advertising riding Sportsters. I want to see them more.

Did a 2,000 mile trip on my 1200C with mustang seat. Great trip except I wanted to rip the windshield off and leave it on the side of the road. Way too much buffeting, even with fork deflectors.
I believe it! This ride killed my neck, being 6'1 and trying to use the sportster windshield does not work very well lol
Riding through Longview and Cranbrook on our way to Mexico next week.

If you can plot out gas stations the Sportsters don’t have the largest fuel capacity.
Well it depends on the Sportster my 2005 1200 C has a 4.6 gallon tank

Windshield is a must for a long trip, unless you like eating bugs. Lol
😂 ya putting down the miles at 62 yrs old I def need a windscreen but didn’t need one when I was 25… happy to be old and still riding regardless.
