Unfortunately the vast majority of consumers would agree with increasing the amount farmers get paid for there produce, but then those same consumers well purchase produce without a thought for how little farms get for their produce.
There's a reason why there aren't any Butchers , Bakeries, Green Grocers, shops or doorstep milk deliveries any more
Supermarkets have too strong a stranglehold over farmers, driven by consumers who are more interested in lower price more than the effect of low prices on farmers.

@@hannahplumleymycarnivaladd6365 Glad that there is still some places doorstep deliveries are still done,
Supermarkets have really come to dominate the nations nation's shopping habits, and in some part contributed to the decline in high street shopping.
And the advent of metro stores they are pushing out the smaller convenience stores to such an extend that only shops catering for the local minorities are left.
As a consumer who wouldn't want cheaper prices, yet we rarely think of the harm producing cheap goods actually has.
Over 55 years I've seen how the retail and shopping sectors have changed.
It's funny when you tell kids that there used to be shops that only sold fruit land veg, or only sold baked goods, or only sold wines and spirits, they look at you if you were senile
But then they say this is progress, fresh produce no longer exists as retailers choose selflife over fresh

I’m an American city dweller whose never been involved in farm life and gags at the sound of cow plop, but this video fascinated me. Small farm milking is actually beautiful, and I never thought I’d say that! About time someone put up a proper milking video showing vows being prepared for milking, so many people put up videos and never show the actual process. Now why do I even bother to make this comment? Because of cell count issues and how other people prepare their cows. I am glad that they are not being was with water which drives cell count to the moon unless they are actually dried with a paper town. The milking parlour is ace, well designed for current milking needs and so advanced for the 60's. If you grew up with a bucket machine in a cabin then you would understand what I mean.
I was interested in the comment of dividing the herd into highs and lows and is this done following testing for cell count or based on the duration of lactation?? I noticed the cows are so clean to begin with so hats off to that.

Great video, just one thing I don't know if you've considered in terms of mastitis control.... You dip from back to front then wipe from back to front but apply the units from. Front to back... In terms of milk let down and it taking 45 seconds for the teat to open after wiping, them first 3 cows having the units having units on straight after wiping, so no time for milk let down... Which in turn could suck the teat end while there's no milk let down which then in turn damages teat end and then make it easier for mastitis to get in. I never believed that parlour routine could be a factor in mastitis until I was shown teat end damage and that, changed the whole parlour operation and cut mastitis. That was 20 a side, dipping 5 wiping 5 then applying units to 5, then spray the 5 come off and go onto dipping spraying wiping the next 5. It did really make a difference and may be overlooked in alot of milking procedures in terms of prevention

you treat your cows real good. They like you cause you show them affection while milking. When I was a kid we had a Brown Swiss/Angus cross milk cow. She weighed out at 1650 lbs and gave us 6.5 gallons twice daily. She was a very kind cow, she loved her kitties and was very protective of them. Foster Bro kicked one of her kitties and made it cry and she proceeded to push him through the fence. He never did that again. We could milk her from either side and most of the time we would double up on milking her. We had her for 16yrs and sold her in milk with a bull calf at her side. We heard much later that she lived to 26 and calved every year he had her. Her last calf was a heifer calf and quietly died in the barn about a month late. We raised this cow and she started calving at about 26months. So we got 13 bull calves from her while we. had her and the next owner got 9 bull calves and 1 heifer from her. Her name was Friendly and she certainly lived up to her name. We were on a Ranch and she was on the range like all other cows not in a dairy. Out of one milking of 6.5. gallons she gave us 1 and 3/4 gallon of Cream after going through a separator. Sure made good butter.

Great video. Shows just what we don.t always realise, the way our milk gets sorted so we can have our tea/coffee and breakfast. We don,t really pay enough for it in the supermarket though.

Great video like your setup and cattle handling I try to make everything we do with our cows effortless my cows are called they come get grain I move them from field to field with hay wagons and we have trained all the herds to follow whatever we are in and when cows want to go it makes life easier

I have seen some sterile looking milk farms but when you get to the milking area it’s just nasty. This farm is so cozy and where the milking is done is so clean I can see why he’s comfortable pumping directly into his cup

Nice system and parlor, if it works , keep working it.
I love a cowpaccino esp for hangover. I'm next to a large farm, 700 milkers, 3 shifts , 4 hours a shift, £20 a shift, cows never see outside. That is sad

It’s nice to see some older machines like yours. We just got a new boomatic machine witch is a direct line to the tank is 10 cows on each side witch we can milk all at the same time it generally takes us 45min to an hour to milk all 119 cows it’s a really great machine and is recommended

Merry Christmas and a Happy New year to you, your family and all who help you guys. My wife’s dad used love drinking the milk fresh from the cow when he was young. He said you just can’t beat fresh from the cow.

You are fast becoming my fav CZcamsr. 😁. My grandpa had a dairy farm in hackney Ohio back in the 70’s and 80’s. He use to let me ride the cows in and pretend they were horses.. he changed my life.
I love watching your videos.. I think I need to find a farmer here in the states 🇺🇸

We have a 6x6 parlour now with direct line, it makes the milking a little quicker. But your parlour is good. do you ever see your self with a new set up? Like robots? I think in our set up it would cost to much as its a rented farm.

Nice vid Tom, my old man was a dairyman and went thru that twice a day as well with Ayrshire cattle. The farm used a Hereford bull for the heifers then had a couple of Ayrshire bulls to maintain the herd size.

Watching this makes me miss buying milk directly from the dairy farm. My brother and I used to walk the 1/4 mile to the farm a few times a week to buy 2 gallons of fresh milk. I started working there a few hours per week when I was 10. I think I made 2 dollars a week (big money for a kid in those days). I did get a free calf once. It was headed to the slaughter house because it was lame.
