Showaddywaddy turned down the song. BBC's TOTPs was then due to have Sparks on the show, but they were unable to get a work permit in time, so the BBC rang around the record companies, one of them said "Yep we have song" and it happened to be this track. John of the Rubettes grabbed Alan who he had worked with previously as Baskin & Copperfield, and other session musicians filled the rest of the line up. And the rest is history.
