  • Hello everyone,
We were so excited to get out of the house after dealing with COVID. We thought what better way to celebrate than to hike the base of Mount Maunganui. It was so beautiful and we hope you enjoy seeing the views!
We apologize in advance for any mispronunciations of any words as we are still trying our best to learn them all. Please kindly let us know of any mishaps!
    Where should we go next?
    Sincerely,
    The Foley Family

My beautiful hometown here in the “Bay of Plenty” New Zealand. Have lost count how many times i have walked up “The Mount”, round the mount, soaked in the hot pools, a must visit and take in it’s beauty and surrounding areas of “Tauranga” itself. It is also a surfers paradise.

You're in a really good sport for things to do. Coromandel further north with the hot sand beach. Rotorua has multiple adventure things, Maori culture exhibitions, Thermal pools and a lot more. Waitomo and the glow worms are a bit further but a cool place to visit.

Recommend you viewing Becca Loveless on CZcams and Instagram. She and her husband and baby son arrived from USA nearly 2 years ago. Have done a LOT of exploring. They have a lot of info for newbies.
    Welcome to NZ!

How will you be able to go fishing or gathering kai? You need to go to Robbie for fish and chips, they are the best in NZ

No rails no worries ...New Zealand has ACC ( accident compensation corp ) insurance which will assist and mend you after an accident free of charge, it covers all accidents and incidents even for tourists, so no need for barriers and rails.

Definitely make a day trip up around the coromadel peninsula. It's a jewel in the crown of the north island, such a beautiful place.
If youre feeling more adventurous and have a few days, head across the island to Taranaki. It's one of the only places in the world where you can ski/snowboard and 30 minutes later be in the surf. Plus my hometown of New Plymouth is a really interesting, beautiful city filled with parks and hikes, beaches and walkways. Would love to show you around if you're ever over this way. 😀

    Thank you for posting.
Glad you’re all better from Covid and now able to get out of the house and enjoy a walk in the sunshine 🌞 Charlotte for NZ Prime Minister 🤓 Poor Charlotte, walking on sand can be difficult for us adults too 😆. Water looked very beautiful in its multiple colours.
Hope the Bay of Plenty hasn’t been too cold and rainy, so you can get out and enjoy yourselves.

I think you would enjoy the view from the top of the Mount, this is the time of year to do it too before the heat and tourists arrive....just pick a nice clear day.
p.s. the cruise liners start back into port this October, the Celebrity Eclipse, 121,878 tonnes, on Sunday 30/10/22 at 07:15 a.m. - 05:00 p.m. should be a spectacle.

Recommend waihi beach for stunning white sand beach and also the walk over to Orokawa bay which is only accessible by walking so super secluded. Fantastic walking trails around the waihi beach area and Athenree hot pools which are very close by. This would be 45 mins drive from Tauranga but more like an hour from papamoa.

In the 70s we used to holiday at Waihi beach, (right at the North end) and took the walk over the point to Orokawa bay, fishing off the rocks, happy memories. Have not lived in NZ for 40 years but still miss those summer days.

Your pronunciation was reasonably on point. The only small detail to work on, I suppose, is the 'ng' sound. In Māori, it's a single sound like the 'ng' in the word 'hanger', without the hard G. However, this can be hard for some people to say or get accustomed to, and it's easy for that hard G to creep in. It's can also be a hard sound when it's at the start of a word, like _ngeru_ (cat), because English never does that, and so sometimes you'll hear people who can only say it as an N.

Taupo is cool for Huka Falls (free) & Craters of the moon which is a thermal park (not free, actually quite expensive and NOT really worth the price I heard). Rotorua is better for thermal stuff and definitely go to Napier which has awesome history. Napier was flatten by earthquake and rebuilt in art deco style.

If you injure yourself you will be covered by ACC (even if it’s your fault) so long as it’s by accident. There is no suing for injury in NZ. Makes for a freer more equitable society with less lawyers. Might explain the lack of safety barriers.
