@@Anonymous163ful While everyone (including you) is entitled to their own opinion and has the right to express it freely (regardless of how unfathomably idiotic that opinion may be), neither you, nor I, or whomever you're referring hereto as "the stupid Soviet cattle" are entitled to speak on behalf of a whole nation and its people; especially, when public opinion is as divided as it is on the subject of Yeltsin...
Moreover, personally I hardly think that anyone who is incapable of recognizing the obvious-i.e., that the man was an unintelligent drunkard, buffoon and a self-serving traitor (though, with a rather decent hairdo)-is in a position to be calling other people stupid...
But, of course, that's just what I think. You, on the other hand, more than welcome to think whatever you please. However, don't assume that either I or the millions of people of Russia, who don't share your opinion, have given you the right to speak on our behalf, whatever the subject.

Brings tears to your eyes to see that we have somehow moved so far away from this moment. Russia, just based on culture alone, is just as strong as the US. From music, to literature, to art, to sport, they are indeed a powerhouse. We gain nothing from a world in which US-Russia relations are fraught.

The United States missed a unique opportunity to integrate Russia into the Western power system after the collapse of the U.S.S.R., during the Boris Yeltsin government. Instead, they preferred to repeat the stance of the Allied powers towards Germany after World War I - which ended up being the main cause of World War II, a few years later - and to treat the Russians with hostility and humiliation. If a free trade area between Europe and the United States had been created with the inclusion of Russia both in it and in NATO, Russian support today would be of fundamental importance to contain China's strengthening and aggressiveness - but I fear that it will now be too late!

Until you get an aging population because a socialist society doesn't JUST try to give out "free" healthcare, it comes with a whole lot of other cultural baggage the left as a whole promote every time they get power, anywhere. Marriage rates drop. Childbirths drop. Divorce rates rise. Single parenthood rises. All these things contribute to an aging population leaving the young unable to support the exponentially growing medical costs of the old, like a reversed pyramid.
Every European country that has "free" healthcare is dealing with this right now. It's why their refugee crisis exists. They were stupid enough to try to fill in the youth at the tip of this reversed pyramid with foreign migrants from war torn hellholes because they desperately needed young, healthy bodies to fill in their shortfall. Because in all these socialist idiotic European countries, birthrates aren't keeping up with the "free" healthcare systems' cost.

The Russians wanted to join NATO, but on their terms. First off, the entire structure of the military would have needed to be changed according to NATO standards. Second, they still saw themselves as more than a mere European nation, and couldn't accept them joining it. If they did, the Alliance would have been an absolute mess.
It was probably impossible. If they could have, I'd have been all for it. A free America and Russia working together? That's probably my dream, but it just wasn't tenable, since we had different expectations.
