I really felt this as you said it man. I had a great job leading a dev team at a startup until Feb 2022 when I had an event that left me hospitalized for months. The whole time they said they were holding my job, but in June when I got home again they said that the team (that I built) was running so well without me that it would be impossible to add my salary back to the books. Similarly I was told I could be a developer instead. Sad times. I moved on and couldn't be happier!

I'm so sorry that you had a crappy situation/experience at Stripe, it seemed like a good fit for you, but it was clear that they didn't value the purpose as much as you did. Congrats for moving on, and making the sometimes difficult decision to switch jobs when there's always an unknown on the other side of the choice.

they basically "punished" you for being such a good python developer i can't believe it lmao. Good luck on your future carrer, you deserve to not be wasted on stuff you do not care about!

@07:22 - I know people get curious about the money, but it's way more interesting to hear about how culture and teams are at 10 to 100, 300 to 600, and the 1000 plus size tech companies. The "Why" and "When' it makes sense to take those types of roles. (grants, options, time, titles, advancement, and you know... like actually enjoying your experience as a developer)

Wise decision -- from my personal experience, having compromised once -- the next time is unfortunately easier and before you know it, you feel completely trapped (having lost your edge/drive) and demotivated. This is my 20/20 hindsight point of view. Not sure how your new setup worked out for you, but good or bad you essentially did the right thing. I admire your wisdom and follow through. I recently discovered your channel, hence this late comment :)

Ah, the good ol' flip-flop from management.
Then they will complain why the talents are leaving and then blame it on HR for not being able to keeping them..
But glad you found a company you feel comfortable with! Hopefully it will not be too harsh on your schedule (new jobs usually are) and we can have our new youtube videos from you !
p.s looking forward for more videos in the 'wat' playlist as it has been quite a while since the last one! Which is one of my favorite :D

Why did you say that you like working in smaller company? What is so fascinating about that? I'm from India, usually people here try to get into the big firms, 400+ employees sort of thing. How is small industry better than a big one? This got me intrigued and I'm really curious now. Also I wish you all the very best for your new role! May this upcoming role bring new and exciting opportunities for you ahead 😇

the larger the company the less influence / impact you can deliver (not to mention more "politics" to get things done) -- usually the main trade off is money but sometimes you can even get that at smaller places

Yeah at big companies sometimes bad decisions get made by a mixture of talented and averagely talented people trying not to step on each other's toes and trying to follow the culture of the company - the feedback loop is much longer so bad ideas tend to stick around a lot longer in big companies.

Stripe has a real lack of empathy amongst most of their employees and there's a lot of very Machiavellian behavior in the company. Not to mention they just shuffle employees around. Not a fan of their management style and robotic behavior.

i worked as security in their Dublin office and saw the work culture........its a 600 employee kinder garden where they go in eat their breakfast from 9-10 then pretend to work till 12 have lunch and at 4 fuck off home with nothing done....... could sack 90% of the office easily
