I'm from Japan. Vegetarian Japanese know how/where to find vegetarian food.
The problem for vegetarian foreigners in Japan is basically language/information barrier.
Mori Soba 英語上手すぎ!
Indeed. And I can recommend the "Loving Hut" restaurant chain.
I don't subscribe too much but I find your interview skills are really amazing, you are never judgemental and because you have a really strong ability to understand different accents you can always dig into the heart of the conversation and the opinions very quickly. You also always have such a cheerful and respectful way as well. It's really fantastic.

Nice post. Well smoking is bad for you, so I'm pro Japan on that.
I honestly don't see the smoking thing as a promblem but everyone has their vices.
🤔 Definitely got stares for my tattoo but I think for me it was more about being a 6' black man in Kyoto but no one was rude to me or cared about me that much in Tokyo/Osaka.
Halal is tough in Japan. Respect the fact that is truly a different country that doesn't cater to everyone but the people often try to accommodate you if you ask politely.
There are vegetarian foods/stores but it's hard to find in Tokyo as I have found many in Kyoto.
Nice post guys. 😆
deafwing Just a note, you can smoke in restaurants in Japan though, so you could be sitting near people who smoke. Lots of Japanese people do smoke, and some still smoke on the streets.
I think tattoos are still a bit of problem where you can’t enter onsens, but I think it’s changing.
A quick search brings up a number of sites that will show Halal restaurants, although I can't vouch for them. But from what I've seen on the tubes and read about there does seem to be an uptick in Muslim visitors to Japan and people in Japan are treating that as an opportunity.
@@judy6520 yup! I noticed even way back in my first trip their 2010, that McDonalds had a sectioned off area for smoking. To me that was nuts lol.
@@quintrankid8045 Facts. I definitely think the locals always attempt to help you ... The language is a barrier but it's definitely possible to find things you like.
deafwing Right haha. I personally don’t really like that but I Guess that’s a Japanese culture.
You guys are great!! Love the videos!! :)

05:19 So people in Holland are like dirty pigs? Smoking anywhere and littering? What is this girl taking about? I've been to Holland a couple of times and it's not like that.
If you put it that way it does sound pretty bad. I'm Dutch and I can agree you can smoke pretty much anywhere (although thats changing in some cities). Also not every city has bins placed frequently so people throw their stuff on the ground easily, especially cigarettes since you don't want to carry those around. So yeah, we should be a little cleaner but we're not the worst, many people are aware of the trash and just wait til they spot a bin

I’m pretty sure sharla and Taylor R have posted a lot of vegetarian/vegan things to eat in Japan. If anyone needs help I’d check them out!
Going to Japan with food restrictions is no fun, there is so much awesome / tasty food and you cant eat it, poor you.
Fuu haha they’re missing out big time!
That's true. Especially, fish is the core of Japanese food culture, so we can hardly discuss Japanese food culture without taking eating fish into account.
Right? I typically eat healthy, but i threw that rule away while i was in Japan haha. Why not try everything while on holidays?
actually, there are a lot of restaurants that are vegan or have a lot of vegan options since they have a lot of Buddhism, etc. there, and the general diet is overall more plant-based and healthy than the diet of other cultures, but you have to either know how to read kanji, know someone that lives there who is vegan and will show you around, or do your research online. These people who complain about it didn't do any of the options above...
I’m in Japan currently, and to compare with Singapore:
- Supermarkets don’t pack groceries for you, you have to pack it yourself
- Cashier states price of items and number of items
- Prices are given with and without tax, where in SG it’s just with tax (and without tax in restaurants)
- Clean toilets even at stations
- Lack of rubbish bins but streets are clean (there’s bins everywhere near every escalator in Singapore)
- Vending machines and convenient stores everywhere!!
- Quiet trains and being able to eat in it (not meals but bread etc. In Singapore, that’s not allowed at all)
- Schedule of bus and train times and their punctuality
- Complicated train lines and how big a station can be
- etc etc.
who the hell just eats bread on a train or anywhere
Serkong I do XD and I’ve seen Japanese eating onigiri and what not on trains.
@@judy6520 isn't onigiri those rice triangles?
I've seen many times that Japanese eat sandwich or whatnot on trains. And I've heard that some Japanese even drink beer and eat cup ramen on trains.
@@ambery6461 It's only in rural area and on intercity train not commuter train. Most people don't eat on the commiter train.

In most countries tourists take pics of the people who live there.
In Japan the people who live there take pics of tourists.
In Russia, the pictures create you
飲食店で出て来る水が無料だと知らなくて「何で頼んでないのに水持ってくるんだよ」と思う人がいると面白い。
That French girl is so cute, trying her best to speak properly
I live in Japan and I’ve only had a few culture shocks:
-Bagging your own groceries and stuff at stores (not counting convenience stores), I was lost the first couple of times. 😂 in the US you only bag your own stuff if you do self checkout.
-water at the table is cool. You’re less dependent on your server in Japan which I like. You can focus on your company more.
-The way the people dressed. Everyone dresses so conservatively and covers up even in the summer, I felt so underdressed. I rarely see Japanese women in jeans, especially shorts. In the US people wear whatever they want to the store, even their pajamas. All the Japanese women I see look nice and I go out with my hair in a bun and leggings and feel out of place.
-the toilets!!! But I enjoy the fancy toilets.
Love the dress you are wearing in the opening and closing! Great information about difficulties with locating food esp for vegans. Just as an FYI, vegetarians and vegans can use the worldwide app called Happy Cow to find vegan and vegetarian food.
At 2:02 Shouldn't you inform the airliner in advance?
Usually they always have a vegetarian option. But a flight attentant told me that on flights between Europe and East Asia you should always order your meal in advance!

Good luck, i cant wait to go back to my country, working in japan is depressing!
did it happened?
Tatoos in Japan are usually seen as a cue to say you are related to the Yakuza.
You can actually buy halal meat at Gyoumu (業務スーパー)
When it comes to vegetarian or vegan options on flights you usually need to contact the flightcompany beforehand and specially preorder it. My close friend is a vegan and Thats What she does on Her flights to Japan!
or you can just not eat on the plane, imagine actually preordering plane food
Serkong Its tough to not eat when Its a 12h flight though.
@@ylva95 fair enough, thought it was like 4 hours.
I heard some Japanese people in these videos say culture shock they had in America was gun shots. I realized how desensitized we are here to that. Like when I hear them depending the closeness and the type of gun it will spook me a bit, literally 1 minute later the shock is totally gone. That girl said she couldn't sleep all night and had her on edge the whole trip which was just as strange to hear, meanwhile in America guns are ok but if a spider or bug gets lost in your room RIP
I was in Kyoto and Tokyo and I actually found a good number of Halal restaurants. All it takes is a simple Google. There's a lot of websites for it.

Halal is actually quite wide available in Japan. I've been there and Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto all had halal ramen places. It's just not as abundant as in Europe but if you Google it you get lots of options (might need to travel a bit out of the city centre though). The only problem I had was in Ishigaki. Both vegetarian and halal were almost non existent there but that's expected since it's a small Island.
Biggest culture shock for me: All the (required)complimentary stuff in the bathrooms. O>O
at bare minimum it will provide: toothbrush, showercap, plastic comb/brush hybrid(actually kinda useless this xD),and shampoo/conditioner/lotion each in its own large pump container(1 hotel they were colored glass). but lots of them will have more i.e. hairband,toothpick,mouthwash/cup for water, makeup remover pad(dry),q-tips,shower gel(in big pump container), and probably more.
There's also free,made-2b-disposable,sandal/slippers and tea/coffee that most will replenish *daily* for comfort convenience ^~^
[its reeeaaal easy to do the 'hotel freebie-grab' of stuff in japan minus washing products if u want ^^;; I did it with the tea and slippers--I still got a pair somewhere xD]
刺青だらけの人に肌に良くないとか言われても(笑)
I'm surprised you didn't speak German to the Germans... But it seems you CAN ask for tap water there (same in the UK). Bottled water is an anti-environmental rip-off, so no need to feel it's tacky to ask for tap water, at least in places where it's safe.
But tap water is dirtier
@@Serkong If you're in Flint, Michigan, sure, but in many countries (including the UK, Japan and I'm sure Germany) it's just as healthy, if not more so. Here's one article (among many) on the subject: www.quickanddirtytips.com/health-fitness/healthy-eating/know-your-nutrients/should-you-drink-tap-or-bottled-water.
There are all kinds of gyoza in Tokyo! ^^,""
and there are so much other non-pork dish around... hm...
The first girl is really cute. 😁😁👍👍
My culture shock....I'm sure there has been many. What stands out to me is that a lot of the public restrooms here don't have soap to wash your hands, and sometimes, they don't have a toilet paper dispenser either. Also, most restrooms don't have paper towel dispensers and often not even a drier, so you're expected to carry around a hand towel in your bag, which doesn't seem sanitary to me. Also, there aren't garbage bins around except usually at stations and food courts, and maybe other random places. Westerners tend to walk and eat/drink more than people here, and then we have no where to toss our trash. I respect that Japan isn't like this though because it probably contributes to the cleanliness. Oh, people here are also really good about keeping outside germs out, like taking shoes off not just in houses but clinics, preschools, schools, carpeted areas. Also, I notice people rarely sit on the ground or let their belongings touch the ground, like a purse or whatever. There's always a basket or something at restaurants. Even on the train, except for wheels, nothing touches the ground. Meanwhile, I got my bags and shit everywhere, sitting on the ground waiting for my friend at Kyoto Station cuz they deliberately have NO WHERE to sit there....
went to university in Japan and the keigo thing was confusing for me and the Japanese people, because I had switched majors and wasn't on a 4 year plan, I never knew what to respond for 何年生. Looking back, I should have just bent the truth for them and said second year and avoid the complexities....oh well.
There's plenty of vegan food places that advertise in Japanese but the foreigners can't read the menu. There are also a lot of Muslims from SE Asia living in Japan. There's an area of Tokyo that sells Halal food in stores and restaurants.
Compared to Europe, the percentage of Muslims in Japan is tiny. Around 100,000 in the whole country?

because usually "tatoo" is for japanese gangs: yakuza, I guess the people around you were surprised with your whole body tatoo, or they might be asian tourists from china and korea, they always stare unfamiliar things.
I'm from Japan. Tattoo is certainly related to Yakuza, but in Japan tattoo is generally regarded as primitive or outcast. If a person has whole body tattoo it's devastating.
同じ大学生同士で先輩後輩のヒエラルキーとかまじでいらんよなぁ、年齢を気にするからまた大学で学びたいって人が変な目で見られるのがわからん

From the Japanese perspective, tattoos that are common to foreigners are culture shocks, but in Europe and the United States, the body is engraved on the sculpture as a beautiful body, decorating the body, ceremonially painful and not disappearing, You can understand it if you think it is an overly stressed personal value.

Racism and sexism is pretty bad, like medical universities having harder entrance exams for women compared to men.
oocares Most female doctors quit their job and never coming back after they married. So female students are potentially risky for University.
@@tangelo6orange Doesnt make it fair to not give them an equal chance. People can choose to hire who they want but education should be provided equally.
T's Tan Tan restaurant in Tokyo Station is vegan,... also food at the Buddhist temples in Koyasan will be vegetarian. All the convenience stores will offer some vegetarian options (including onigiri) ... I don't think it's difficult to be vegetarian or vegan in Japan.
Nobody says there is not any vegan restaurants. In fact, vegan is not common in Japan.
In non-vegan restaurants, it is usually difficult to change the dish for vegan because of the nature of it. Though, the amount of vegan restaurants is less 1% of all restaurants in Japan.
By the way, Japanese people don't use TripAdvisor or yelp as many foreigners use. Japanese people use "tabelog", so TripAdvisor or yelp offer enough and exact information.
Except chain restaurants or restaurants in tourist spots, they don't have English menu. Plus, vegan restaurants usually privately run.
You said convenience store will offer vegitarian choices, but they don't prepare for vegitarians. I mean they don't have vegitarian section in the store and the products don't have any tags for vegitarian, so vegitarians or vegans have to judge it if it is for vegitarians or not by themselves.
Onigiri is not necessarily for vegitarian. If anything, not for vegitarian is more common. Onigiri itself is usually vegitarian, but the ingredients is usually not for vegitarian. Plus onigiri itself is flavored itself as not for vegitarian.
The name of products is used English, too, but the the list of ingredients is used only Japanese.
I mean it is not very common, and it needs good Japanese skills. As a conclusion, I think it is not difficult for those who can Japanese well but so difficult the others.
It doesn't any good for foreigner vegan and vegitarian to just explain a small part example and only good side as if it is easy...
@@denischadima1175 I stand by what I originally said,... it's not difficult to be vegetarian or vegan in Japan, you just need to know where to shop. Going to most restaurants is probably not a good strategy but in convenience stores, markets and the food basement of most major department stores you'll find plenty of options. The foreign tourists here just weren't aware of this, that's all.
Japanese know how to eat!!! 🇺🇸🇯🇵

_Fish_ needs to be prepared in a halal manner as well? I would think anything without pork would be ok (chicken ramen, all-beef hamburgers, pizza, etc.). Also, anything without meat or dairy is vegan, no? Basically there is no concept of vegetarian, vegan or halal in Japan. Here is a long-time virtue of not being picky about foods. Recently they are trying to change mind and service by globalization, but it is better not to expect.
Not being picky is a virtue. No mono-cultural crops, no over hunting/fishing of specific species, varied and healthy diet, less needy customers in restaurants, etc. ;)

After listening to the German girl I would never want to live there lol. The bathroom thing kills me. I just think it should be a basic human right
It's not just Germany. Many places in Europe are like that. The bathrooms are kept up independently from the establishment so the people who clean them are the ones asking for the fee when you use them.
Does that mean that someone has an obligation to provide you with toilet facilities?
where are you from? i've had to pay to use toilets in every country i have been to except for japan.
@@lo0ser555 In the US most toilets are free, if you're in the place they are for a legitimate reason. That is, eg a lot of restaurants will politely decline to allow you to use their toilet if you aren't a paying customer. The water, other supplies, real estate, insurance (the US is nothing if not litigious) and maintenance must be paid for. However, they aren't usually mean about it if you aren't. I once used a toilet without being a paying customer or asking in advance, but I offered them some money afterward and they were satisfied with the offer and didn't take the money. Sometimes restaurants here have an attendant who charges money for things like little paper towels. I do remember once going to a fair where there were pay toilets and I have vague memories of other places with pay toilets, but I think they're pretty rare here.
Ah, memory refresher, I took a look at wikipedia and it seems that there was an organization in the 70s or so that worked to get pay toilets banned in the US. Some of those laws have been repealed and we may see the return of the pay toilet here.
As a Korean, I much prefer squat toilets. Not only me, most Koreans prefer squat toilets. We dislike our skin touch the public toilets and it's very difficult keep the space from toilets when using normal toilets.
Germans has to pay for glass of water? Nuts
It seems like the common assumption would be that terrorist do not do research before they go to Japan. It's odd to me that you wouldn't look up something like veganism before you went to try and get the best experiences. I mean even with researching there would still be some culture shocks but at least you'd go in knowing a little bit more about the country you're visiting
