      The problem with conspiracy theories has always been jumping to conclusions. AKA If they see something that seems even a little suspicious, they will automatically assume that means they are guilty of the conspiracy, and they will be militantly, 100% confident in that opinion. There's lots of cases in court rooms of people who looked _REALLY_ suspicious in the police interrogation but then turned out to be 100% innocent when they caught the actual person who wasnt suspicious at all. Basically dont assume guilt based on assumptions of suspiciousness and you wont be a wackjob conspiracy theorist.

      I wish Johnny quotes from latest Shi Zheng Li's interview with NYT to give more information, and also her recent science paper regarding this issue, instead of quoting her early words only to support the confirmation bias. I read her story about her previous research, she is an inspiration. She even has been warning the pandemic for years, with other scientists. That say, the other part of the video is fair enough. I just wish this video add in more science, like finding information about the genetic sequence, to make it more convinving.
      Btw to add some info to the public, she is not a ccp member (which is rare given her ranking), dont simply mess up everything with politics. I have no interest to defend any country, just speak up for a researcher.

    As someone on the left, I was surrounded by people that thought lab leak was fringe and conspiracy minded when COVID-19 hit. And yet, it seemed the most obvious thing in the world to me. And it was really, really weird to me how the scientific community came together to denounce it so strongly when there was no evidence for the wet market and a fairly large amount of circumstantial evidence for the lab leak. I didn't see any substance to the wet market hypothesis, rather just a statement about the need for international cooperation and solidarity in its place. I certainly didn't know the truth, but I was getting shouted down and laughed at for suggesting the possibility of a lab leak. At the time I was listening to the TWix line of podcasts, especially This Week in Virology and Microbiology. And I was hearing virologists tell me without a shadow of a doubt that it couldn't have come from the lab, which was just so odd because every other part of the podcast would go into great detail about mechanism and analyze things really deeply -- getting into the nitty gritty of published research papers -- but on that topic it was just a flat denial and more lip service about international solidarity and cooperation. And it would just keep coming up too; and instead of exploring the biology as a response, the listener would be treated to an actually angry rant that was far more about international and local politics than anything like reasoning. I learned to loathe the host Vincent Racaniello over the first half a year of COVID whereas prior to COVID I liked the guy for years. I felt he was being intellectually dishonest with himself and his audience out of some sort of weird loyalty to his tribe. As someone with physics and maths degrees and a decade of experience in engineering, I wanted an academic podcast that only cared for the pursuit of truth in biology, the STEM field with which I'd had the least exposure to in the past. Truth > tribe.

    • @JJCore27
      @JJCore27 Před rokem +14

      Yes, same! I definitely hold more left leaning views but, like you, anytime I mentioned the lab leak theory I was basically told “you really believe that?” Can’t stand that it was politicized and there were definitely people I looked at a bit differently because they completely rejected and mocked the idea of a lab leak with nothing to back up why they were doing so. Like you said, truth > tribe, unfortunately it was the opposite.

    I remember reading many months ago that we had satellite intel showing an empty parking lot at the Wuhan lab for days or weeks, I believe it was in Sept, Oct or Nov. 2019. I was doing my own online research because my father died on Jan 17, 2020 in Texas from an unusual respiratory condition that they called pneumonia, but did not act like any pneumonia patient I had in 40 years of practice as an RN. His chest X-ray was what we see with COVID. This was a week before the supposed “first death from CV in the U.S.” Now we know several scientists from that lab were hospitalized, as you said. I think it is entirely possible that the beginning of the outbreak was bungled and covered up by the Chinese government at the highest level, and that is why they continue to impede a real international investigation.

      I got sick in California I believe during Thanksgiving or just after in 2019. It was brutal but I still got on the plane the next day with my brother, trying to keep my face wrapped/buried in my jacket. I didn't test positive for the flu either, and my brother didn't get sick, which is strange since covid is quite contagious. But it just makes me wonder because I was so damn sick for over a week and it was worse than any sickness I've had, and I sit here having confirmed covid for the second time right now.

      @萧峰 Yes and no. In science, a hypothesis exists before we understand a phenomenon, while a theory is a bundle of data that offers an explanation of a phenomenon after we understand it. In casual speech, though, people have started to use the word theory as a synonym for hypothesis, which then created the problem of people thinking about scientific theories, like the theory of evolution, as "only" theories, which is why people are now starting to care about using this word correctly. So, if we want to be rigorous with the scientific method, we should call this a hypothesis.

    The bigger video needs to be done as to WHY you couldn’t make this video in 2020, why you couldn’t ask these questions, why there was allowed to be a failure of journalism. That’s the real disservice, to the world in general. 20:15 Stop silencing dissent.

      @@oo3813 Because Trump would literally tell dozens of lies everyday and had Republicans working overtime to make sure he wasn't blamed for his self-serving tactics and complete lack of leadership to the COVID response across the country... It was impossible to know what the truth even was until we had some pragmatic, none political journalists doing the research and reporting on the whole chain of events, a few years after Trump left and the political flame war moved on to other BS topics like CRT. The one thing Trump did that was amazing, was to put Project Warp Speed under the military. It removed politics from the creation of the vaccine. So while Trump was playing politics and talking about withholding PPE and ventilators from blue states, the vaccine got to everyone. I don't know if putting the military in charge of Warp Speed was Trump's idea, I'd like to think that it was but... It wasn't really his style.
