National Museum of China: Exhibition of Ancient Chinese Buddha Statues | Museum of China

In December 2019, the National Museum upgraded and renovated the special exhibition "Ancient Chinese Buddha Statues", adding nearly 200 exhibits and auxiliary explanations, and exhibited it in a new look in the North 19 Exhibition Hall. The exhibition aims to outline the development process of ancient Chinese Buddha statues, systematically present the shapes and connotations of Buddha statues in different regions, and demonstrate the diversity, unity, long history, openness, inclusiveness, and profoundness of Chinese culture.
The exhibition revolves around the two clues of "tracing the source" and "development". "Tracing the source" mainly displays the Buddha statues in ancient India, leading the audience to understand the statue art of the birthplace of Buddha statues; "development" consists of "Chinese Buddhist statues" and "Tibetan statues". "Buddha Statues" is composed of two juxtaposed parts to show the artistic characteristics of Buddha statues in different periods and regions in China.

彩绘木雕观音菩萨坐像
宋 （960-1279年）
高200厘米
菩萨头戴高花冠，面目清秀，神态安详，双目下视，似以无限悲悯的神情关注着人间。身披帔帛，帛带绕臂飘逸身边。胸饰璎珞，下着长裙，长裙色彩鲜艳，覆座垂地。裙腰结带，腰带饰宝珠花饰。菩萨右手持莲花，左腿下垂，足踏山石，极富生活情趣。她不再是高居神坛的神，而是可亲近、可交流的一位心灵使者，是善的代表、美的化身。
观音又称观世音、观自在，其信仰自3世纪传入中国以后，很快便在各地发展起来。西晋太康七年（ 2 8 6 年） 竺法护翻译《正法华经》，观音信仰开始在中国发展。中国现存最早的的观音菩萨像存于甘肃永靖炳灵寺，为十六国时期的造像。南北朝时期《观世音菩萨授记经》、《观无量寿佛经》、《请观音经》等涉及观音的经典陆续译出，更加丰富了观音信仰的内容。为适应中国文化和信仰的需要，还出现了一些融合中国传统思想的中国式观音经典，如《观世音三味经》、《观世音十大愿经》、《观音忏悔经》。在这些观音经典的影响下，观音信仰成为中国宗教信仰的重要内容，观音由宗教性的菩萨逐渐演变成与人间生活息息相关的救苦救难的菩萨，其造像由印度佛像中的男相菩萨变为如慈母般的女性菩萨，就连观音的圣地也由印度迁到了中国的普陀山。中国的观音形象有一首二臂、手持莲花、净瓶、杨枝等物的显宗观音和一首多臂、多首多臂的密宗观音以及白衣观音、送子观音、南海观音等。观音信仰中国化的轨迹是佛教中国化的重要表现。
