Check the water pump drive shaft, had the same noise and overheating problem and fixed it by replacing that.

I had a similar issue. There was a ruptured radiator hose. Fixed that and it still overheated. Turns out it was the radiator cap lol

I have a 94Z 28 Camaro was doing the same thing so what I did I put it in defrost full blast and I turn the heat on and the fans came on and the temperature dropped down to 180 and after that he was running between 180 and 160 the fast we’re all coming on so you might want to try that my friends wasn’t coming on or nothing I thought it was a short somewhere Brown and I did the same thing you did change the temperature for the fans to come on and took about three days they finally came on so now it’s running with the fact kicks up and goes to the middle and then it stops dropping down down

i had the same issue driving me crazy for months, temp at 3/4 all the time and bit more, so i replaced the water pump for brand new one not used and problem fixed, the old one looked good but inside what you cant see is the problem so if water pump hasnt been replaced in 20 years on that car well start from there, and also removed the thermostat if it doesnt snow.

What i actually ended up having to do was apply for a waiver for emissions testing because they no longer manufacture at all the charcoal emissions canister for the 1996 camaro so for that reason it would be impossible to properly diagnose the electrical system.
