I bought a used North Face tent in the mid-80s and I still use it today. The quality is outstanding. I was so impressed that I bought a North Face Gore-Tex jacket. It was the most expensive jacket that I ever purchased, but it was worth it. Back in the early 2000, I found a similar North Face jacket at REI and I bought it. When I wore the jacket the next day, the front zipper snagged and I had to take the jacket off by pulling it over-my-head like a sweatshirt. I returned the jacket to REI for a refund and the REI customer return employee agreed with me that it was a piece of junk. Instead of using a YKK zipper, North Face used a cheap plastic zipper. I've never bought a North Face product since then.

This is what happens when you turn clothing made for a purpose in to clothing for the aesthetic.
This is why so many people poke fun, call out, and sh*t on those who wear clothing that has quite literally no function to said person.
A majority of these people wearing North Face or any other of the suddenly “cool” “fashion styles” which reflect others jobs, careers, inabilities to see and their way of life, do it because with that way of life there is a struggle these people go through which creates a hardened exterior and allows them to present themselves in a confident manner.
They’re able to firmly state what they want, how they want and so on.
While these people stand here looking to get confidence, any kind of it, and struggle to find their own identity.
This is true for the vast majority of those who take others looks. This is why and how we get to a point where we now have these companies selling literal garbage quality items because they know for a fact that 99% of those who buy their merchandise won’t be utilizing the product for what it’s intended for.
It’s all laughs when someone calls you out for posing as what you aren’t, until you understand that companies will ride that wave and lower their quality because it’s no longer a product of function but of simply viewing with the eyes.

About that "the Germans did it" thing - what you're talking about is the old, 80s combat boot with the "Oberfeldwebel" sole, named that because the heel has a profile that looks just like the rank symbol of a German Oberfeldwebel (OR-6). These were replaced around the year 2000 with boots that featured a similar, but evolved version of that lacing system. The clamp eyelets at the instep were retained, but moved further away and towards the sides of the boot while the area in between was covered with softer leather and padding.
The way this was supposed to be used was to tie the foot section less tightly so the feet were allowed to swell during marching with heavy load, and the shaft could be tied tighter, giving hold to the foot as a whole.
This system was essentially retained functionally unchanged in subsequent boot generations for the German military.
Source: I served 13 years in the Bundeswehr and went through a number of generations of boots during this time.

Yo Weston, been a fan of the channel for years with a pair of ND1's in the cupboard.
As an engineer with a materials background though I wanted to point out that you didn't consider corrosion as a key factor for material choice in the D ring. If it had been a ferrous metal as you had hoped it would rust away as soon as it is exposed to even rain, let alone rivers or puddles, even a stainless steel would corrode in these conditions (see cybertruck pannel issues), the same can be said of copper and most other metals. Something stable like brass or aluminium is the only choice in this situation, so the aluminium makes a lot more sense than you give credit for. Just some food r thought for future critiques.

Now you know why I have a bias in favor of Mil-spec or actual issue footware. Seems that’s the only way to get something both appropriate and affordable - buy something developed for, tested by, and made en masse for thousands of infantrymen. (FWIW, my current “winners” are the Desert Storm boots and the USAF boots).
It’s a real pity, because I really like a “just over the ankle” boot. GI boots are taller than I prefer. (And USN Boondockers are unfit for use off the ship).
I think “waterproof” is over-rated. Various liners break down, and truly waterproof boots quickly become foot saunas and fungus farms. I’d much rather use a very breathable, quick-dry boot coupled with multiple layers of socks. It’s amazing how much heat is generated simply by walking.

In the early 90s, I used to buy a lot of outdoor gear at the North Face outlets in Palo Alto and Berkley. Not shoes, they never made wide shoes, but everything else was top quality - I still wear some of the blouses I bought back then.
About 8 years ago I needed new summer hiking pants. I usually bought LL Bean, but their quality was going downhill. So I checked out TNF, same size as I bought at Bean ... I could not get them over my hips. The size that did fit my hips was huge on my waist and very tight on my thighs. It was also the largest size they sold ... I was a little overweight but still under the USA average weight for women. I don't know who their fit model was, but they missed the mark big time.
Looks like they have not improved since then.
[I ended up buying from Duluth Trading. The fit wasn't perfect but it was good enough ... and my size was in the middle of the range, so more "powerfully built" women could wear their pants.]

The weight of insulation quoted on jackets and boots is usually the weight PER square metre. You can't quote actual weight of insulation as there are multiple different sizes of jackets and boot and each size will have a different weight,
So in order to provide a base for comparison across different products the insulation is usually quoted per fixed area. A jacket or boot with a 200g square metre rating will be warmer than one with 150g per square metre rating for example.

The North Face used to be a great brand. Sad to see like so many others they've sold out

My North Face ultralightweight, waterproof boots are absolutely perfect for the use-case I intended for them: playing disc golf in wet conditions.
They keep my feet dry, even if I stand in water 70mm deep. The grip is superb, and doesn't get clogged with mud.
The only downside is that the top hooks for the laces are a bit tight, and need careful use.

Had 2 pairs of The North Face boots. Soles fell off both of them. Never buying again. Complete rubbish that let you down when you need them out on a trail miles from anywhere. 🤬

Having worked in the Outdoor-Mountaineering business for 25 years, I have long ago shunned away from purchasing clothing from the major brands. Its workwear nowadays, for price and longevity. That said, the one thing that still is ok with me is the way Gore regulates how any brand has to use the Goretex material in their boots and these mandatory guidelines are quite strict. (Whether Goretex is useful in boots is something completely different.)

Can you please check out the Salomon Quest 4 GTX? It's been my personal favorite hiking boot for a while now and I would love to see your opinion on them!
