On the surface it appears that the K-pop industry depends heavily on fans jumping on a bandwagon to create a very large fanbase that drives sales and pushes a group up the real-time search charts, which then gets them show wins, chart success, CF's, and wider recognition as members start to appear in mainstream TV, movies, or variety shows. If you aren't at that top of the searches, it seems Koreans won't dig very deep looking for artists they might enjoy. At least that is the theory I have read and does partly explain the difficulty that small company groups encounter trying to get noticed even when they are getting decent views on CZcams. You seemingly have to have some luck with something about the group going viral in a positive manner, or the group starts to catch on big enough overseas that it starts to generate headlines in mainstream news back in Korea.
