  • Kitchen lighting layouts can make or break your entire kitchen design! It's often overlooked and rarely fully understood by even the "experts". After redesigning this kitchen in a previous video, I decided to create a lighting plan for the fixtures and recessed lighting.
How many recessed cans and how far apart? That's always the question. The answers require you to evaluate how you use your kitchen, the fixtures and finishes of the lights. But most importantly, the spread and lumens of the lights makes laying out a lighting design as straightforward as a little math!

The best explanation I have heard for homeowners.

FINALLY a video about lighting design that actually has real information. Thank you SO MUCH. I kept wondering how people can throw out a random formula when they don't even know what light I'm using (lumens, beam, etc.??)! I feel so much more confident in choosing the placement of my recessed lights now, thanks to you!

I really love your approach to design, every project is a "one off". Your advice makes a huge amount of sense. Thanks from a UK architect!

Wow! This is such great advice and information.👍👍
I would love to get your thoughts about cove lighting in crown moldings. Up light the ceiling with it? Down light the walls with it? Or should you skip it all together if you have anything below a 9' ceiling?🤔

🙏Light the ceiling! It will make it feel taller.

Excellent...I think that's just what I'll do. Thanks so much!

Love your videos! Thank you so much. Do you still recommend spacing the recessed lights 22in away from the wall instead of the hallway even if you have under cabinet lighting?

Yes! Under cabinet lighting isn’t always on! I hardly ever used mine except for ‘atmosphere’🤣 it’s usually inferior to a fixture in light quality and it’s weird working with only your hands illuminated!

please tell more about kitchen island. how to light island wtih cooking hob and pullout drawer? should i combine pendant light with recessed light?

    • @lizbiancoismydesignsherpa

That depends on the lumens of the fixture and how you plan to use it. For a task light, the lumens required are higher, 75-100. If you plan on cooking without the pendants on or want the option and added light, then add one over the hob 🤣(I can’t help myself)

This is great info for placement! My electrician wanted to put in a grid of 6" cans and I stopped him to say I wanted 4". Can you suggest what brand and type of bulb should I tell him I want? I feel like this is just as critical as the placement!

There’s several great established names. WAC, Juno, Dals Nora , just stay away from brands that can’t write a sentence that makes sense in the description(Amazon). If budget permits, no wafer lights. Recessed cans will generally come with the led bulb included so just check the beam spread.
